Lanham, MD (PRWEB) June 11, 2013

Thompson Creek Window Company, a leading home improvement replacement product manufacturer headquartered in Lanham, Maryland has been awarded a 2013 Guildmaster Award with Distinction for exceptional customer service. GuildQuality, an independent customer satisfaction surveying company, has powered the Guildmaster Award with Distinction since 2005 to celebrate service excellence in the building, remodeling, contracting, and home services professions.

The primary requirement for receiving a Guildmaster Award is exemplary customer service, as demonstrated by an extremely high customer recommendation rate. Thompson Creek Window Company was selected as one of the over 200 North American builders, remodelers, developers, and contractors recognized by GuildQuality for their superior delivery of customer care.

Over the past few months, GuildQuality reviewed numerous survey responses submitted by customers of Guildmaster candidates. In order to qualify for this award, the provider must achieve a recommendation rate of 90% or greater.

Rick Wuest, president and CEO of Thompson Creek, was proud to be honored as one of this years Guildmaster Award with Distinction winners. Daily business briefing: Health reform brings no coverage, fewer hours for some - June 12, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

While many businesses are scaling back work hours to keep part-timers out of the company insurance plan, others are not hiring so as not to cross the 50-employee definition for large employers -- the federal threshold for having to insure full-time employees. Still other businesses are mulling the option of scotching company health coverage altogether and paying a federal fine instead. For more information, go to http://www.bnd.com/business. ...

Companies are hiring again and putting a priority on keeping the workers they have. According to a study by Harris Interactive, of the 154 companies surveyed last month, 58 percent reported they added or plan to add workers this year and 8 percent expect to cut staff. At the same time, a third of all employees plan to look for new jobs this year. To learn more, go to http://www.bnd.com/business. ...

The Appraisal Institute says that not all renovations positively impact property values. According to Remodeling magazine's most recent Cost vs. Value report, some of the projects with the highest expected return on investment are siding replacement, entry door replacement, attic bedroom addition, minor kitchen remodeling and garage door replacement. Only Certain Home Improvements Pay Off, Appraisal Institute Says - June 12, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - June 11, 2013) - The Appraisal Institute, the nation's largest professional association of real estate appraisers, today advised homeowners to use discretion when deciding which home improvement projects to take on, saying that not all renovations positively impact property values.

"Projects that take a home significantly beyond community norms are often not worth the cost when the owner sells the home," said Appraisal Institute President Richard L. Borges II, MAI, SRA. "If they don't match what's standard in a community, they'll be considered excessive."

According to Remodeling magazine's most recent Cost vs. Value report, some of the projects with the highest expected return on investment are siding replacement, entry door replacement, attic bedroom addition, minor kitchen remodel and garage door replacement. Other renovations with high expected pay-offs include basement remodel, deck addition and window replacement.

Borges advised homeowners that it may be best to hold off on big renovations if a homeowner isn't sure how long they will be in their home. The longer a homeowner stays in a property, the greater the opportunity for a return on investment, he said.

"Consumers should be aware that cost does not necessarily equal value," he added.

For an unbiased analysis of what their home would be worth both before and after an improvement project, a homeowner can work with a professional real estate appraiser -- such as a Designated member of the Appraisal Institute -- to conduct a feasibility study.

During a feasibility study, the appraiser will analyze the homeowner's property, weigh the cost of rehabilitation and provide an estimate of the property's value before and after the improvement.

Some green and energy-efficient renovations, such as adding Energy Star appliances and extra insulation, are likely to pay the homeowner back in lowered utility bills relatively quickly. Lower utility costs also are a draw for potential homebuyers. When appraising a home, the appraiser evaluates local supply and demand for green and energy-efficient properties and features.

The Appraisal Institute offers a free, informative brochure titled "Remodeling & Rehabbing," which provides consumers with valuable advice on home remodeling.

Storms hit homeowners insurance coverage - June 9, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The sad sight of houses pulverized by a tornado in St. Charles should get us thinking about homeowners insurance. Insurance company executives are thinking hard, and some are pulling back coverage.

Higher deductibles and limits on coverage for roof damage are among the nasty changes. Premiums are up nationally by 4 to 6 percent nationally, according to the Insurance Information Institute, an industry trade group. That is two to three times consumer inflation.

Historically, youve been able to buy replacement cost coverage that would include the roof. Even if its 20 years old, if its hit, you get it replaced, said Larry Case, executive vice president of the Missouri Association of Insurance Agents. Lots of companies still offer that, but some are limiting claims on older roofs to their actual cash value. Thats a lesser level of coverage.

Under replacement value coverage, the insurer pays to repair the damage fully with new material. Under cash-value coverage, the insurer pays only up to the depreciated value of the roof.

If a roof has been up for half its expected life, the insurer may pay only half the repair costs. If it costs $8,000 to fix it, they may only give you $4,000, says Case.

Tom Wilson, CEO of Allstate Insurance, created a kerfuffle in the insurance business last year when he defended such a policy in a conference call with investors.

People just dont get their roofs fixed and then a hailstorm comes and we replace a $20,000 roof when were getting a thousand bucks from the customer and its obviously not a good trade, Wilson said.

Allstate is rolling out new policies that fully replace roofs that are less than about 10 years old. Then it goes to a schedule that pays less. A spokeswoman said the average roof it insures in Missouri is five years old, so most homeowners arent affected.

Insurers are also getting more reluctant to replace areas that arent damaged, even if they look strange after repairs. A 2001 hail storm in north St. Louis County damaged 70,000 homes and provided a classic example.

The hail often ripped up siding on one side of a house, but not the others. Many homes were old, and insurers couldnt find new siding that matched the color of the other sides.

HRM delivers $429k in funding to community groups - June 8, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Seventy-one community groups in the Halifax region should get city hall grants this year totalling $429,483, a staff report says.

The report says 140 applications were received for the 2013-14 grants program, for a combined amount of around $1.3 million. This years budget for the annual program is $500,000.

Halifax Regional Municipalitys grants committee is to consider the staff report at a meeting Monday. The committee will then make a recommendation on largesse to regional council.

Of the 71 applications recommended for approval, some have proposed conditions attached. Thirty of the 140 were deemed ineligible under the programs rules.

The program doesnt provide multi-year funding but candidates for monetary gifts may apply in consecutive years, the report says. The grants committee can overturn or amend a recommendation, it says.

Applicants are not always treated equally, the report says. Sometimes, the playing field might need to be adjusted.

In circumstances where there is (not enough money) to fund all qualified candidates, preference may be given to groups who have not received a grant or those who do not receive other forms of HRM assistance, the report says.

    Among the recommended recipients:

    W. Williams Non-Profit Housing Association ($12,500), to cover the cost of siding replacement.

Nova Scotia SPCA ($5,272), for the cost of window replacement and exterior ventilation work at its animal shelter, conditional on the applicant confirming it has the balance of funds needed to complete the work.

    Snowmass Center getting a face-lift - June 5, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

If youve gone grocery shopping lately in Snowmass Village, you probably noticed some construction at the Snowmass Center.

Related Colorado is giving the property an exterior remodel, the first its had since opening in 1979. The project has been under way for about three weeks and will wrap up in about another three, according to company President Dwayne Romero.

Snow and rain in May slowed the project down a bit initially.

Its all weather-dependent, obviously, Romero said.

Much of the remodel focuses on the siding. At certain elevations, the sun has beaten the siding, causing it to bow and its paint to chip. Those portions are being covered with battens, or panels.

In other elevations, which have not been beat by the sun, clearly it was just a scraping and tuneup of trim and then a repaint, Romero said.

The remodel also will repair trim around the whole building and add new paint, awnings, signage and lighting for the signage, Romero said. The color scheme is similar to that of neighboring Town Hall and other buildings in Snowmass Village, which was something resident Rick Griffin, who works in the building, said he particularly likes.

I think theyve done a really good job of upgrading the center from the center that they bought, Griffin said of the current remodel as well as the replacement of the retaining wall in the parking lot and other improvements made.

Were doing what we can, Romero said. The market and the economys not there to come down and just knock this whole building over. And we admit that its been awhile. This thing is long overdue for these types of improvements. But weve been kind of able to save our nickels and now are getting into it where we can start reinvesting a little bit more aggressively.

Barb Wickes, owner of Sundance Liquor, an original tenant of the building, said she was excited about the changes.

United Home Experts Completes Restoration of Historic Massachusetts Church - May 31, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Boston, MA (PRWEB) May 31, 2013

United Home Experts recently aided in the revitalization of a Massachusetts landmark, as they completed the restoration project of the First Congregational Church in Shrewsbury. The church, which was established in 1722, was in dire need of external renovations.

United Home Experts began the renovations by stripping the old siding from the exterior of the church, and installing new insulation. In some places, new plywood sheathing was required because the old sheathing had rotted away. United also installed a new vapor barrier in order to protect the plywood from moisture, and avoid rot in the future.

Perhaps the most modern update that United included in their restoration of the church was the installation of the Everlast low-maintenance siding solution. Everlast is waterproof, and capable of withstanding winds of up to 285 mph. In a moisture-prone environment like Shrewsbury, which has seen its fair share of prodigious New England snowfall over the years, a water resistant solution was the perfect choice for an older structure where wood rot could be an issue.

Restoration projects on such an old structure, pieces of which are nearly 250 years old, can be fraught with unforeseen complications, and should only be undertaken by seasoned professionals. United was able to handle any curveballs that came their way, such as rotted structural beams and a crumbling brick foundation, while still preserving the character of the historic structure.

The work has been done with an extremely high degree of professionalism, said Harold Stuart, a representative from the church. The crews have been extremely neat at all times. I would highly recommend them.

About United Home Experts: Ashland, Massachusetts-based United Home Experts, is a full-service home improvement company offering siding, roofing, painting services and replacement windows in Boston, and much of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. United develops experienced, skilled craftsmen and field managers who are focused on customer satisfaction, and uses the latest technology and equipment on projects to increase efficiency while improving quality.
