New sprinkler system means hospital patients could be moved - May 31, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Brandon Regional Health Centre will undergo rotating closures of beds over the next three months and some patients may be temporarily transferred to other health facilities while a new sprinkler system is installed at the hospital.

Prairie Mountain Health CEO Penny Gilson said every effort will be made to minimize disruption and make the transition as "seamless and smooth" as possible.

"Well certainly work with the patients and their families to make it (the) least stressful as possible," Gilson said. "But our reality is that we really do need the Brandon beds for the people who need that level of service."

Gilson said they will be monitoring the occupancy at the BRHC and the level of care that patients require.

"As needed, we will have to move units around within (BRHC), but if we become extremely tight for beds, we will need to look at moving people to potentially alternate facilities," Gilson said. "It will be based on where people can first and foremost, get safe, quality care."

Depending on what is available at rural health centres, patients may be transferred to Souris, Carberry or other nearby facilities.

"It could be any of those that have beds available, thats really going to be the issue," said Brian Schoonbaert, chief operating officer at BRHC and vice-president of finance, capital and support services with Prairie Mountain Health.

"And of course when transferring, youre always having to ensure that theres a doctor on the other end that we can transfer the care to."

Macomb deputy shoots suspected sprinkler system thief - May 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. -

A Macomb County Sheriff's deputy was involved in a shooting with a suspect early Tuesday morning.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham tells Local 4 deputies were called at about 2 a.m. to Maplewood Lane, which is in the area of 22 Mile and Romeo Plank roads, on the report from a homeowner that someone was lurking around her home. The man is suspected of stealing sprinkler system control valves.

As deputies were patrolling the area, the suspect was spotted and ordered to stop.

Wickersham said the suspect didn't comply, got into a nearby car and sped off -- hitting a deputy.

The deputy fired two shots at the suspect, hitting him in the arm.

The suspect, a 26-year-old Macomb Township man, was arrested when he crashed his car into a sheriff K-9 vehicle.

The suspect was treated and released from a hospital.

Wickersham said the deputy involved is a 19-year veteran of the department. He was treated for his injuries at a hospital and released. His name was not immediately released.

Wickersham said the suspect faces numerous felony charges, pending his arraignment.

CDOT Gets $5M For New Sprinkler System At Eisenhower Tunnel - May 21, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    The Eisenhower Tunnel (credit: CBS)

DENVER (CBS4) Its one of the Colorado Department of Transportations biggest concerns in the high county, and now a bipartisan effort is bringing millions for a new fire sprinkler system in the Eisenhower/Johnson tunnels.

CBS4s Jeff Todd got a tour of the tunnels Monday and found out significant money could help during dangerous situations.

Its something CDOT wanted to get going, but last year the state didnt have any money, and when they turned to the federal government, they were left empty handed. But after a bipartisan bill in the last session, $5 million is what workers are calling a jumpstart on the sprinkler project in the tunnels.

The safety of the facility has always been paramount for us, Mike Salamon with CDOT said.

With the nearest fire department at least 20 minutes away, the CDOT fire brigade has seen its fair share of work over the years from cars overheating as they approach 11,000 feet in elevation.

We see on the range of two to three automobile fires a year. Weve had some very, very close calls over the last 40 years, Salamon said.

An example is an RV that caught fire in 2000. An observant crew member in the control room at the tunnel stopped traffic, likely saving lives.

Heat and smoke are the two biggest dangers inside the tunnel.

Its really just a great big chimney and depending on the intensity of the fire, it could become more and more dangerous, Salamon said.
