Suribachi on February 23, 1945. Due to the presence of a sprinkler system, no vehicles can drive on the lawn. The Newington Fire Department graciously donated their time and resources to change this special flag which had become torn after storm Sandy. The flag was properly folded by the expertise of the Marine Corps League, Hardware City Detachment. The family members of two Iwo Jima Survivors who had passed away were there to witness the event. The Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation, a non-profit organization, is responsible fo the upkeep of the memorial and park, the only one of its kind built by Iwo Jima Battle Survivors and dedicated on February 23, 1995.
