Fire damages Englewood apartment; fire chief credits sprinklers with containing blaze - January 31, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

ENGLEWOOD Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at the Towne Center apartment complex on Friday evening, with the citys fire chief crediting the buildings sprinkler system with containing the blaze to one room and preventing more extensive damage.

The fire was caused by a candle that fell over in a living room about 5:40 p.m. in an apartment on the fourth-floor of the 4-story complex and led to the temporary evacuation of about 150 people, said city Fire Chief Gerald Marion. It was under control about 30 minutes later, he said, adding that no one was injured and the fires cause was determined to be accidental.

Marion said the building, comprising two connected towers, is made of the same lightweight construction as the Avalon apartment complex in Edgewater where about hundreds of people were displaced indefinitely last week when one of its two buildings was destroyed by fire despite the presence of a sprinkler system. The Englewood complexs robust sprinkler system did most of the work of putting out Fridays fire, the chief said.

Had there not been a sprinkler, we would have potentially seen something similar to Edgewater, Marion said.

He said that owners of the Towne Center, which has more than 180 units, omn Friday night began repairing damage to the apartment where the fire occurred. The family that resides there is staying elsewhere during repairs, he said. Other residents were allowed to return to their apartments about an hour after the fire began.

Outdoor water ban looms - January 29, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SCOTT HAMMOND/ Fairfax NZ

Renwick resident Peter Ball waters his garden.

Sprinkler restrictions are in place in Renwick and Picton, with an outright water ban looming if people do not curb their water use.

People in odd-numbered houses can only water their gardens with sprinklers on odd-numbered calendar days in the affected areas, while those living in even-numbered houses can use sprinklers on even-numbered days.

The water restrictions, which took effect yesterday, mean only one tap can be used to run a sprinkler system in Renwick and Picton.

Marlborough District Council operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney said there was no limit on using handheld hoses, but residents were asked to be sensible with their water use.

"If people continue to increase their water use, if they ignore the ban and it gets drier, an outright ban may have to be imposed."

The same set of watering restrictions were put in place in Renwick in February 2014, March 2013 and December 2012.

The water limits in Renwick would be in place until further notice but in Picton it was hoped that it would be a short-term restriction only, Rooney said.

Householders, particularly those at Waikawa, might experience low water pressure during the restriction period, he said.

Three families displaced in Renton apartment fire; sprinklers keep it from spreading - January 29, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A sprinkler system extinguished a fire at a Renton apartment complex Tuesday night before it could spread, according to Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department.

The call came in at 8:06 p.m. as an activated fire alarm at the Benson Downs Apartments, 11000 S.E. Petrovitsky Road.

No one was injured, but three families were displaced from their water-damaged apartments, according to Renton Deputy Fire Chief Chad Michael. The American Red Cross responded to assist them.

Four units suffered water damage, with the unit where the fire started the most affected by water and some fire, according to Michael.

The fire was started by flower-shaped decorative lights resting on the carpeted floor in the dining area, he said.

Fire crews didn't need to deploy their firefighting equipment but helped clean up the water damage.

Two engines, one ladder truck and two aid units responded to the fire.

Michael stressed that the sprinkler system kept the fire in check. "The sprinkler did its job and kept the impact to a pretty minimal amount," he said. A damage amount wasn't immediately available.

He noted that recent fires at apartment complexes in Renton grew in size because they didn't have sprinklers.

Sprinkler Mandate Now in Effect: Controversy Moving Forward - January 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Updated: 01/26/2015 2:29 PM Created: 01/25/2015 1:01 PM KSTP.com By: Brandi Powell

A new state law is now in effect.

Builders are required to put sprinklers in all new homes, 4,500 square feet or larger.

Looking ahead, the controversy surrounding this issue continues.

Firefighters are in favor of putting these sprinklers in new, large homes, but builders say the sprinklers are only going to make things tough for them and homebuyers.

Local fire chiefs have pushed state lawmakers, to require sprinkler installation in large, newly-constructed houses.

"The house was not equipped with a residential fire sprinkler system, which contributed very dramatically to the loss," said Eden Prairie Fire Chief George Esbensen, on Nov. 7, 2014.

"One thing that would have helped this house is fire sprinklers," said James Van Eyll, Long Lake Fire Chief, on Dec. 31. He added, "This house would have probably been standing with minimal damage if it had a fire suppression system."

On Oct. 6, St. Paul's Fire Chief Tim Butler said, "I'll take water damage at my house any day than having my house burn to the ground or my kids die in a fire."

Long-term State Fire Marshal stats show Minnesotans are doing better with fire safety.

Picton and Renwick impose sprinkler restrictions - January 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sprinkler restrictions have been imposed in Renwick and Picton from today as the pressure on water supplies continues to rise with the hot, dry weather across Marlborough.

In Renwick, water use has continued to rise despite reminders that levels were falling fast in the township's supply wells. After another hot day yesterday, demand reached an all-time high last night prompting this morning's decision to impose water restrictions.

In Picton, a pipe failure at the Esson's Valley water treatment plant has added to the problems. All of the town's water is being supplied by the Speed's Road plant and demand is running beyond its capacity.

Council's operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney is appealing to residents in both areas to ease off their water use.

"Renwick residents were using 72 litres a second last night that's actually 12 per cent more water than the previous maximum use in the township set just a few weeks ago. People just don't seem to have accepted the message that they need to cut back," he said.

From today, hosing gardens must be limited to alternate days in both Renwick and Picton.

Properties with even-numbered street addresses may use sprinklers only on even-numbered calendar days and those with odd-numbered street address are restricted to the odd-numbered days.

There is no restriction on hand-held hoses but residents are asked to be sensible and keep this to a minimum. Only one tap should be used at a time to run a sprinkler or sprinkler systems.

In Renwick, the restrictions will be in place until further notice but in Picton it's hoped that it will be a short-term restriction only.

"Some of the town's reservoirs are down to just 30 per cent of normal capacity and we need people to co-operate," Rooney said. "Work is underway on the problems at the Essons Valley plant and, so long as demand eases enough for the reservoirs to refill, the hosing ban in Picton may be in place for less than a week."
