The automatic sprinkler system kept an early morning fire at Stanton Tower from becoming worse, but it did leave behind water damage.
Fremont Fire Department crews were called to the eighth floor of Stanton Tower at 3:56 a.m. today. They found the apartments resident laying in about 4 inches of water in the doorway, Capt. Pat Tawney said.
The sprinkler system is priceless, Tawney said.
Tawney said it appears the resident had left a placed a piece of wood on top of the stove and then a microwave on top of that. So far, its undetermined how the fire started.
Smoke was contained to the eighth floor of the high-rise apartment building, but Tawney said there was water damage on the eighth, seventh and sixth floors. An additional shift was called in to help with the cleanup.
The resident was transported to Fremont Health Medical Center.
Several residents did evacuate their apartments this morning. Tawney said those whose apartments sustained water damage were working with the Fremont Housing Authority, which operates the complex, on what steps to take next.
Typically, Tawney said, the department recommends residents at either Gifford Tower or Stanton Tower remain in their apartments and place a towel at the bottom of the door when there is a fire in another unit until firefighters ask them to evacuate. Sprinklers and the concrete construction of the buildings help keep fires from spreading.

The Peaceful Valley Youth Center has completed its move to Brownes Addition and settled in the downstairs area of All Saints Lutheran Church on Spruce Street, just across from CoeurdAlene Park inSpokane.
The church underwent extensive remodeling including the installation of a wheelchair ramp from Spruce Street, a lift and a partial sprinkler system. Most of the $300,000 the youth center had raised for the move has been spent, and the Rev. Alan Eschenbacher said the church kicked in another$20,000.
The youth center opened Dec.1.

UPDATE 1/20/15 @ 11:30 p.m. WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Wayne County students will be back in school Wednesday, following reported water pressure issues throughout the city.
City and school officials say Kenova Elementary has enough water pressure to have class.
This comes after parents flooded the school board with concerns of the school not having proper fire safety.
The Principal of ZZM Architects says the school portable has been cleared for classes, but the construction site for the new school has not.
The issues were brought up in a meeting last Thursday by Kenova Mayor Ric Griffith.
A presentation revealed major issues in the city's water system, including low pressure at the school that threatened the safety of students.
School board members and architects quickly responded, closing school Friday and Tuesday while they and city officials worked to fix the problem.
The architectural group met with the fire marshal on Tuesday to discuss the test results. They ruled that the lines provided adequate pressure for the sprinkler system.
"We are continuing with the testing and with the calculations to confirm that we will have enough pressure and flow for the new facility," said ZZM Principal David Ferguson.
Ferguson says they also have not decided whether or not a storage tank will be needed on the construction site to compensate for any amount of low pressure they may have.
