Redding man creates roof sprinkler to save homes from fires - September 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    REDDING, Calif. -

Joseph Lewellyn invented a way to protect homes from burning.

He calls it Inferno Protection, a roof sprinkler system installed on top of homes.

Lewellyn said he has been working on the design for 8 years at his home in north Redding.

"I was trying to think of a way to save homes from wildfires and houses catching fire next door and this is what I came up with," Lewellyn said.

He said the system is simple and can be installed on any roof.

Lewellyn said the sprinklers would be installed using either PVC or copper pipes. Once the system is turned on, the water would soak the roof, dousing any hot ashes or embers.

"Everybody has water and as long as you have a water flow your house is not going to burn," Lewellyn said.

The on and off switch is designed to be outside and accessible to firefighters or anyone who might be in the are during a fire.

Lewellyn works with a licensed contractor who will install the systems. He said the price depends on the house.

Lincoln Elementary sustains water damage - September 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lincoln Elementary School is cleaning up after two of its classrooms sustained water damage Sunday afternoon.

Principal Theresa Smith said a sprinkler head broke off the schools fire sprinkler system, spewing water all over Pam McGhees second-grade classroom.

We did have quite a bit of water damage. The fire department came and was able to shut that off, Smith said.

The water caused damage to reading books, text books and other classroom materials before spilling into the hallway and flooding the music room across the hall.

Some water also seeped into the Title I classroom.

The music teacher is going from room to room to teach music today, Smith said Monday.

The second grade class spent the day in the library.

The school hired Premier Carpet Care of Beatrice to help remedy the problem. The company sucked more than 250 gallons of water from the classrooms and brought in dehumidifiers to dry out the carpet and walls on Monday.

Smith said a teacher was working in the building when the sprinkler head broke. The fire alarm went off, and the teacher called the fire department and the principal.

Because the problem was noticed right away, Smith said the damage was not as bad as it could have been, although many books and classroom materials had to be thrown away.

Columbus schools Downtown headquarters lack fire alarm, sprinklers - September 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Standing-room-only crowds at times pack its basement meeting room, and file cabinets housing paper records stretch from wall to wall across its upper floors.

But the Downtown headquarters building of Columbus City Schools doesnt have a basic fire alarm that would sound in an emergency or notify the fire department of a blaze in the middle of the night, a district internal audit noted recently. It also has no fire-suppressing sprinkler system.

The reason? They werent required by city building code or the state fire code at the time of the buildings construction.

Its not required to have an alarming system in it, due to the date it was constructed and under the type of the occupancy it is, which is a business-code occupancy, said Battalion Chief Tracy Smith, spokeswoman for the Columbus Fire Division. It is Ohio Revised Code compliant.

The building has a 150-person assembly permit for school-board meetings, Smith said. A fire alarm is required for public assemblies of 300 people or more, she said.

From the fire department aspect, we would love to have every single building in the city of Columbus with an alarm system and sprinkler system, but the law doesnt require it, Smith said.

The three-story, 28,200-square-foot building was constructed in 1960, and its meeting room is often filled to capacity, with the crowd spilling into the hallways.

A district internal audit into the practices of the personnel department reported last month that paper records covering thousands of district employees could be destroyed in a fire because of the lack of an alarm and sprinkler system. The records arent backed up off-site, the audit said.

The personnel department, housed on the first floor of the building, responded to the audit this school year by storing all documents for newly hired employees electronically, allowing them to be backed up off-site. It is looking into scanning older documents into electronic files so they, too, can be backed up off-site.

Haunted house back in Clinton - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CLINTON Haunted houses are supposed to be scary, but a year ago, officials in Clinton announced that a venue without a sprinkler system was just a little too frightening for the State Fire Marshal's Office.

For the first time in 19 years, the Clinton Chamber of Commerce's most profitable yearly fundraiser, "Terror on Washington Street," was canceled due to the safety concerns.

The house will reopen better and safer, said Clinton Chamber Executive Director Marian Brisard.

"We have been working on this since May," she said. "The sprinkler system was installed, and we are about ready to get that hooked up to the city's water service.

"As far as making it even safer, we have had a volunteer electrician rewire the entire upstairs, and, hopefully, we can get to the downstairs, too. But, everything is going to be much better and much safer."

Also, the ceiling tiles on the main floor were removed, and several other odds and ends were completed to improve the haunting experience, she said.

Several volunteers, such as Clinton resident Tim Allen, are meeting at 6 p.m. on weekdays to prepare.

"I really enjoy working with the youth, because they have so much energy and are always very excited about this house," he said. "It's a longtime tradition here."

The grand reopening is set for Oct. 10, at 513 E. Washington St. The house has made the list of top 10 haunted houses in Illinois in seven of the past 11 years, as determined by http://www.hauntedillinois.com.

In the past, it has attracted about 5,000 visitors each season and brought in thousands of dollars for the Clinton Chamber.

Clinton Haunted House back after one year absence - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

"There were a lot of people disappointed last year because it is something that a lot of people look forward to every year," said Brisard. "We have most of our volunteers back, not all of them, but most of them and we are hoping to get some new volunteers to replace them. We think it's going to be a great year."
