UCF stadium shut down for sprinkler repairs - August 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Leslie Postal, Orlando Sentinel

    2:11 p.m. EDT, August 19, 2014

UCF's Bright House Networks Stadium has been closed temporarily this week for repairs to its sprinkler system, but the work will not interfere with upcoming college football games, officials said.

The University of Central Florida is replacing a small section of pipe less than four feet that feeds the stadium's sprinkler system, said Grant Heston, vice president for communications and marketing.

A sign announcing the stadium's closure went up today.

The work is to be completed before Aug. 31 when the 10th annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge is to be held in the stadium. In that game, North Carolina A&T State University will face off against Alabama A&M University.

The Knights' first home football game of the season is scheduled for Sept. 20 against Bethune-Cookman University. The closure has "no operational impact," Heston said.

If for some reason the repair work is not finished before the scheduled games, the stadium would still open. But UCF would need to have firefighters stationed there during the contests, he added.

Fire alarm at Wake Forest Innovation Quarter attributed to building-system malfunction - August 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

First responders are investigating a fire alarm at One Technology Place at the corner of First and Chestnut streets and have closed off the surrounding block. (Andrew Dye/Journal)

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. A building-system malfunction was to blame for a fire alarm at One Technology Place on Sunday, according to Eric Tomlinson, president of Wake Forest Innovation Quarter.

About 4 (p.m.) today there was a report of a loud booming noise. An investigation has shown that there was a building-system malfunction, probably in the sprinkler system, Tomlinson said.

He said the problem was in the basement. It appears that a sprinkler pipe broke and caused a booming noise, he said.

Tomlinson said just after 6:30 p.m. that the fire department was permitting reoccupancy of the building.

Battalion Chief JS Henley said all Wake Forest Baptist calls come from that building and 20 employees inside heard an explosion on the fourth floor.

Henley said the fourth floor is a chemical company which is why they dispatched their Hazmat team for precaution.

Henley is not sure of the name of the chemical company and owners could not be contacted. Maintenance workers came out to fix the sprinkler system.

We actually determined there was a break in the sprinkler line in the basement, which allowed air to get into the system and when that happens it causes what we call water hammer in a building and it shook, Henley said.

Employees with a Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center call center had been evacuated to a nearby building while firefighters and a hazardous materials team swept the building at 200 E. First St.

Dan Gengler: Sprinkler systems limit losses, injuries in fires - August 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Deara Editor:Some may not be aware that a fire broke out in a two-story, multiple-family structure in Madison July 27, and there is a good reason for that: None was injured and, relatively speaking, there was limited damage. The fire was promptly extinguished thanks to a properly installed and well-maintained fire sprinkler system. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the sprinkler head closest to the flames had been activated and had already doused most of the fire. This recent event is an example of how the risks to brave first responders and firefighters are often mitigated in structures that feature fire sprinkler systems.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, there was a total of $12.4 billion nationally in property loss as a result of structure fires in 2012. Adding to that number this year are the approximately $15 million in damages caused by a fire in the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development building, also in Madison, which did not have a fire sprinkler system installed.

A fire sprinkler system works to control and typically extinguish a fire before firefighters even arrive on the scene, and provides those who are inside the structure the time to get out safely. If more fire sprinklers were installed, perhaps we would hear less of financial catastrophes like the government building fire in May, and more of residents escaping controlled fires safely. I am thankful that no one was injured in either of these Madison fires, and would like to commend both the town of Madison Fire Department as well as the Fitchburg Fire Department for their exceptional work in ensuring the safety of the residents in the apartment building.

I urge you to educate yourself on the current life safety codes and fire sprinkler requirements in your own city, and learn how to protect yourself, your loved ones and your community.

Call to fit sprinklers in schools - August 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Ministry of Education is being urged to put sprinkler systems in all schools after a suspected arson destroyed four classrooms and a library on the Kapiti Coast.

The fire gutted a Paraparaumu School block on Sunday night. All its old photos and archives went up in flames just as it was planning a 125th anniversary in November.

Three teenage girls have been arrested in relation to the fire, which is believed to have been started in a rubbish bin next to the building.

Retired New Zealand Fire Service national fire safety director Kevin Henderson said a sprinkler system would have saved the building.

"Even as arson, one or two [sprinkler] heads would have gone off and done the job. The tragedy is that it could have only been a minor incident. We will carry on losing schools and lives until the message gets through."

Sprinklers cost 3 per cent of a total building cost, he said, but there was a gap between building designers and senior government about appreciating their value.

Paraparaumu School principal Steven Caldwell said there were smoke detectors in the gutted block, but no sprinkler system.

"There is a case to be made for the Ministry of Education to fit and retrofit all schools with sprinkler systems.

"It may not have stopped our fire.

"We put our funding into educational resources . . . we are told how to spend our money. Why not make a blanket policy that all schools have sprinkler systems?"

Warehouse fire in Springville causes minimal damage - August 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SPRINGVILLE -- An active sprinkler system at Cott Beverages, near Wing Enterprises in Springville, kept a fire in check Tuesday evening and allowed firefighters to knock down the flames quickly before further damage occurred.

The call came in about 7 p.m. When firefighters responded no one was in the building, but Springville Fire Captain Allen Duke said an employee was using a welder two hours earlier in the shop.

Investigators are unsure if that was the cause of the fire, but Springville Fire Chief Henry Clinton has ruled the fire accidental.

The structural damage is minimal, Clinton said. The sprinkler system deployed and kept the fire in check.

"A work bench for welding, shelving and some product around the shelves were lost in the fire, but the structure itself is intact.

The fire was contained to a shop in the front area of the warehouse.

Initially, Clinton had Provo Fire respond to the scene to help with vertical ventilation, but he said by the time the additional firefighters had arrived the sprinklers had kept the fire contained and they were able to use horizontal ventilation.

It is hard to ventilate a warehouse, Clinton said. We had zero visibility and thick black smoke.

"These are what I call big-box fires, and I dont enjoy them at all. They can be really dangerous with the threat of the ceiling caving in on you.

Twenty-three firefighters from Springville and Provo helped put out the blaze in about 45 minutes. Crews had to use positive pressure blowers to clear the building of smoke throughout the evening.
