PLYMOUTH A senior center in Grafton County that serves an average of 142 people per day has just been given $170,000 in emergency block grant funding to fix its malfunctioning sprinkler system.
The Plymouth Regional Senior Center's leaking fire suppression system required five emergency repairs in April and May of this year, administrators of its overseeing agency, the Grafton County Senior Citizens Council, said in their application to the New Hampshire Community Development Finance Authority.
Kevin Flynn, CDFA's communications director, said the grant was approved late last week.
The situation is critical, administrators said, because of the intensity of use the restored former Boston & Maine train station now gets as a full-service senior center. It includes activities rooms, a library, exercise rooms, a computer lab and a large dining room that regularly serves more than 75 diners.About three-quarters of the seniors who use the site regularly are determined to be of low and moderate income according to administrators. We're pleased and relieved to get this grant, Roberta Berner, Executive Director of the Grafton County Senior Citizens Council, said Friday in a news release.
It's important to protect the safety of our participants, staff and volunteers. We'd like to thank CDFA for quickly responding to the emergency.Leaks were found this spring throughout the building where condensation had built up in the pipes and one leak was particularly severe. During an inspection, it became clear that leaks were occurring throughout the system and that portions of the system were in need of substantial repair or replacement, council administrators said.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- One person was hurt in an apartment fire, but the good news is that the building's sprinkler system did its job.
It happened just after 10 p.m. at 90th Street and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, just west of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway. Firefighters arrived to find the fire mostly contained to the third-floor unit where it started.
With the head start that the sprinkler system gave them, crews easily kept the flames from spreading to other apartments.
Because of the size of the apartment complex, firefighters from both Scottsdale and Phoenix responded.
One resident suffered minor injuries and was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Hospital.
"Neighbors heard the smoke alarm go off," Jay Ducote of the Scottsdale Fire Department said. "So just a reminder to always check the batteries of your smoke detectors for that first notification when there's smoke in the house."

One recent structure fire in Pearland reinforced the value of fire sprinkler systems. Not only were there no reported injuries, but the structure also sustained minimal damage.
On August 18, 2014, the Pearland Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial fire alarm on the west side of Pearland where upon arrival, they discovered a sprinkler head activated in a tenant space near the kitchen. The fire started near a wall outlet, traveled up the wall and activated the sprinkler system.
The fire sprinkler kept the fire from causing severe damage to the commercial establishment and prevented it from spreading to adjacent tenant spaces and extinguished the fire before the Fire Department arrived.
This incident demonstrates the effectiveness of automatic fire sprinkler systems. Had a sprinkler system, or automatic fire suppression system, not been present in the building, the outcome may have been very different, said Roland Garcia, Fire Marshal.
While fire sprinklers are required in all new apartments in Pearland, as well as specific commercial structures, most people dont consider installing automatic fire suppression systems in private residences. For a small investment, often less than cabinet upgrades or new carpeting, these life- and property-saving systems can be installed.
The Pearland Fire Department encourages individuals building a new home, or renovating an existing residence or other property, to seriously consider the installation of automatic fire sprinkler systems. For additional information on fire protection systems, visit pearlandtx.gov/firesprinklers or contact the Pearland Fire Marshal at 281-997-4650.

When Perkasie Fire Company members speak with residents, one of the things they encourage them to have is a sprinkler system in their homes.
However, some might be surprised where there isnt a sprinkler system.
We promote sprinklers, but we dont have one in our building, Perkasie Fire Company Chief David Worthington said.
A sprinkler system is the biggest ticket item on a 14-item, $423,000 list of capital funding projects the company would like to implement at its Perkasie station.
With the cost of maintaining the station in mind, the company is considering asking borough residents for an increase in the fire tax and held a public forum to get resident feedback at the firehouse Thursday, Aug. 14.
In addition to borough officials and members of the fire company, a small handful of residents listened to Worthington expound upon the companys financial situation and funding needs.
The fire company has two stations: one in the borough and one in East Rockhill Township, with the company providing coverage to 68 percent of East Rockhill. Both Perkasie and East Rockhill have a fire tax, with the company receiving the entirety of Perkasies tax and a proportional 68 percent of East Rockhills tax funding, according to Worthington.
Funding for the maintenance of each station and the apparatus held there is kept separate, meaning the taxes Perkasie residents pay go only to the station in the borough, according to Worthington.
Currently, 1 mill out of the 5.75 mill tax rate goes to the fire company, according to information on the boroughs website.
It basically equates to $27.80 per billable parcel, the chief said. Continued...
