Firefighters responded to a kitchen fire in an Ashland apartment complex Tuesday, but a working sprinkler system had already extinguished the flames by the time crews arrived.

Ashland Fire & Rescue responded to the Snowberry Brook Apartments, in the 2000 block of Villard Street, at 1 p.m. Tuesday for a reported sprinkler activation due to a fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found the fire, which had started near a small kitchen appliance, had been controlled, fire officials said.

Ashland Fire Chief John Karns said the appliance, thought to be a blender, was plugged in and had melted, likely due to an electrical short.

After the plastic melted, flames began to spread on the counter. The sprinklers activated it and extinguished the flames by the time they reached the walls.

Karns said the fire is not suspicious and is a prime example of why sprinkler systems are important.

"This was an eight-unit residential facility. We could have had a fire that damaged all eight units," Karns said. "It's exactly why we're trying to promote residential sprinklers."

The fire's official cause remains under investigation.

Harrow Borough Council teams up with London Fire Brigade to install new sprinklers into vulnerable people's homes

Vulnerable people will soon be receiving the latest sprinkler system in their homes.

The new scheme set up by Harrow Borough Council and London Fire Brigade and will target people who are most at risk of causing a fire in their homes.

So far, the council has referred the details of 60 homes to the fire brigade, with all referrals seen within 48 hours.

Richard Claydon, London Fire Brigade commander for Harrow, said: We make a point of seeing at-risk residents quickly to ensure they stay safe. This isnt about dictating to people about their lifestyles, but just ensuring they cut down on fire risks.

Harrow is one of the first boroughs in North London to begin kitting homes out with this sprinkler system. We have been very impressed with it in trials. It is like having a fire fighter in your home.

Councillor Susan Hall, leader of Harrow Council, said: We are committed to making Harrow safer so were happy to financially underwrite this programme.

We have seen all too many examples of where a small flat or house fire proves to be fatal, so I am very pleased we are offering extra help to those most at risk in Harrow.

JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

90% of the time it only takes one sprinkler to save your home from going up in flames. The St. John's Fire District is spreading that message of safety.

St. John's Fire Marshall James Ghi says a sprinkler system is like having a firefighter in your home.

Saving a life could come down to a matter of seconds.

Over the weekend, the firefighters conducted a demonstration showing how quickly a room could burn without a sprinkler system. Both rooms had the same furniture but only one was equipped with a sprinkler.

"The smoke detector will sound at the smallest amount of smoke," said Ghi.

Flames appeared within 10 seconds.

Ghi said, "The sprinkler heads are activated by head."

Ghi says a sprinkler system helps to control a fire.

"Not only does it allow time to get out of a home, it also limits property damage," said Ghi.
