Tranquility found at home for 1997 Walsh valedictorian - October 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Accountant, professor cites success from a beautiful backyard

(Editors note: The following is the sixth in an ongoing feature series on young professionals in the Olean area. In an era of declining populations and fewer job opportunities, the featured individuals have chosen this place as home, making their marks and forging success stories despite sometimes overwhelming odds. This feature: Bysiek CPA proprietor and St. Bonaventure University adjunct professor Ed Bysiek.)

ALLEGANY Life is tranquil for the Bysieks out on West Five Mile Road.

By Ed Bysieks definition, they have their own little world in the country. And thats just fine for his needs as a self-employed certified professional accountant. Last Friday afternoon, wearing flip-flops, khakis and a sharp purple golf shirt, Mr. Bysiek, 34, sat on his porch his home office, which moves inside to a butterfly-themed sunroom during winter and tended to business while enjoying the fresh fall foliage.

The 1997 Archbishop Walsh valedictorian hasnt moved too far. And thats a teaching point for his finance and accounting students at St. Bonaventure University.

Ill say that my Ive had every schooling and work experience within a 10-mile radius, which I think is the exception rather than the rule, said Mr. Bysiek, who earned a masters degree from Bonas in 2002. Ive been fortunate, in a sense, to be able to stay around here.

But why did I stay? Id say a combination of things. One is the familiarity of the place and family. I know what Im going to get from people here. Certainly other hometowns probably have that for people who have lived there, but this is my hometown.

The same could be said for his wife, Evelyn, 30, a 2002 graduate of Hinsdale Central School, he noted.

Despite the relative peace of the home office, however, Mr. Bysiek said his professional life can be testing. In addition to managing Bysiek CPA in its seventh year, he has taught two to three classes per semester in the SBU business school for eight years.

Before his interview with the Times Herald, Mr. Bysiek started his day with an audit report to the Olean Urban Renewal Agency then rushed back to Bonaventure to lecture an 8:30 a.m. class in the new William E. and Ann L. Swan Business Center, he said.

Charlotte couple gives new life to a landmark home - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Anyone who has lived in the area for a few years and passed the corner of Queens and Sharon will recall the house across from Myers Park Baptist Church a genteel beauty that had fallen on hard times. The overgrown yard was choked with ivy and the house looked lets just say it haunted.

When Margy and Walt Pettit bought the home last year, they became guardians of its history. Margy learned all she could about the red-brick Tudor Revival, listed on the National Historic Register as the Albro House. Two years after it was built in 1926, it was partially destroyed by fire and rebuilt.

Since then, nothing save for one coat of paint had been added or changed. The house had been in the same family from 1929 until 2008, when the reclusive owner died.

The original hardware was still on the doors. The original terrazzo floor was (and is) in the sunroom. Even the servants bathroom and a coal furnace remained in the basement. So did some coal.

The plumbing and electricity were positively state-of-the-art for the 1920s. Remarkably unaltered is how the Blast for the Past Historic Charlotte Preservation Award submission charitably describes the house as the Pettits found it.

Yet they were undaunted. We loved it as it was, says Margy.

The Pettits hired an architect and contractor who loved the house, too. Jack Rorick, a Myers Park resident who served as general contractor, calls the Pettits brave for taking on the massive restoration. Allen Brooks of ALB Architecture says the house, like any great work of art, speaks for itself.

Despite the houses ramshackle appearance, a structural report indicated it was sound except for the roof. Rorick painstakingly took the tile roof off, shored it up and put it back on, tile by original tile. He estimates 85 percent of the tiles are original.

Brooks wrote in the application for the Historic Charlotte Preservation Award (to be presented Oct. 15), Great economic burden was expended toward the purpose of completely dismantling (the) red clay tile roof and reinstalling with new guttering. Judges agreed and awarded the team the residential preservation excellence award.

The Pettits, who have two grown children, had long been aware of the house, but they werent even contemplating a move. Then a friend told Margy the price had dropped for the fourth time and Margy thought it was time to take a look. Walt agreed.

Movie star Joan not your typical cat lady - October 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

JOAN Dunlop is not a typical cat-lady.

Sitting regally beneath a roaring tiger print in her lounge room turned film studio, she radiated the charisma of a movie star - or letter-writing royalty.

Despite her shrinking frame you get the feeling there is something larger-than-life about this character.

These suspicions were confirmed when she poured herself a mid-morning gin and tonic and offered it around to a roomful of 20-somethings.

The prolific letter-writing career which has earned Mrs Dunlop Toowoomba celebrity status has also become the subject of a student documentary entitled 10,000 Letters to the Editor.

Queensland University of Technology filmmakers are producing the short film which will celebrate the 40-year strong career of Toowoomba's beloved wordsmith.

QUT student and film director Lonnie Gilroy read her letters growing up in Toowoomba and immediately thought of her for his university project.

"We had to do a single camera production. I've always been a fan of Joan's letters and I thought who would be better for the project than her," he said.

"I enjoy her irreverent style, you never know what you're going to get with Joan. She's a bit of a character and has lived a full life."

Mr Gilroy said he liked the idea of every town having someone who writes letters.

Linda Hunt's Hollywood bungalow a welcoming blend of whimsy, elegance - September 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a historic Hollywood neighborhood filled with modest side-by-side period revival homes, the 1919 bungalow of Linda Hunt and Karen Klein stands out for its refreshing mix of old and new.

From the street, the one-story home looks like a traditional Craftsman, but step inside and colorful interiors offer a profoundly modern greeting. It is a jewel-box home filled with carefully considered details and custom finishes ranging from antique door pulls to lavender-colored walls and graphic wallcoverings in surprising hues of purple and green.

"This house has whimsy and a special kind of elegance," said Hunt, an Oscar-winning actress. "It's welcoming."

The couple appreciates the home's bright and sun-filled interiors, which set it apart from other Craftsman homes in the neighborhood.

"We lasted six months in a dark Craftsman down the street," Klein, a retired therapist, said with a laugh.

They bought their current two-bedroom home with a plan to make better use of the cramped floor plan. They wanted a home that made sense, with free-flowing movement from room to room that would be suitable for them, their houseguests and dogs.

"We wanted to make better use of the space," Hunt said. "We wanted to use the house in a different way."

After touring a Hancock Park kitchen and den designed by Linda Brettler, the couple turned to the architect to help them rethink the living spaces.

Brettler began by moving the central hallway south, which added 3 feet of space to the corridor. This provided room for a washer and dryer and storage closets. Formerly a dark space, the hallway is now illuminated by a colorful stained-glass skylight and a framed mural-like stretch of wallpaper designed by cartoonist Saul Steinberg for Schumacher.

Reconfiguring the hallway also allowed Brettler to transform a bedroom located off the living room into a den and library that doubles as a guest room. These subtle changes helped to simplify the home's circulation and provide a circular path in which to navigate the house.
