New shade tree plan in the works for Glen Ridge - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Glen Ridge may have a new plan in place for caring for its public shade trees by this fall.

The borough's Shade Tree Commission is finishing up a revised master plan for the planting and care of trees around Glen Ridge.

This winter hasn't caused too many problems for Glen Ridge's shade trees, said Deputy Administrator Mike Zichelli. Instead, the big problem continues to be age Glen Ridge has a lot of very old trees and very young trees, with not much in between, he said. To add to that, some of the more recent saplings are having trouble thriving, as the older trees start to decline.

Tim DeLorm, the chair of the Shade Tree Commission, said that the master plan should be ready before the end of September.

The goal is for the master plan to include details on what types of trees should be planted around town, and in what locations including high-traffic "gateway" intersections like the Ridgewood/Bloomfield Avenue intersection, Zichelli said.

However, he said, there is still a problem with landscapers building up "mulch volcanoes:" piling mulch around the base of the tree, which ends up weakening the trunk and the roots.

Some of Glen Ridge's younger trees fell victim to drought, disease and conditions such as maple blight in 2011.

On average, Glen Ridge has to take out about 40 large trees a year. "It's not a number we'd like to see, but it's a reality," Zichelli said.

The number is consistent with what it has been over the last five years, except during major storms and weather events.

The shade tree canopy has also taken a heavy hit from major storms over the last three years, including Hurricanes Sandy and Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm.

City Officials Say Mass Tree Removal In Long Beach Is A Public Safety Issue - July 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    TRI-STATE NEWS HEADLINES

From our newsroom to your inbox weekday mornings at 9AM.

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) Long Beach residents are stumped and upset as hundreds of trees in the oceanfront town have come down.

Chainsaws roared through historic sycamores on Tuesday, but as CBS 2s Carolyn Gusoff reported, residents say many of the trees appeared to be healthy.

Its the loss of not having a beautiful tree lined street. These trees were over a hundred years old, Fred Rondina said.

Residents said that even living trees that appeared to survive Superstorm Sandy are being axed. Once shady streets are now lined with wood chips.

Some of the ones on this block are clearly blooming and just need a couple of branches pruned, and thats it, Ann Marie Klosky said.

Long Beach officials said the trees were inundated with salt water during Sandy, and now pose a safety hazard.

A tree could fall and could hit a pedestrian or traffic. It can be catastrophic, said Joseph Febrixio, Long Beach Deputy Commissioner of Public Works.

The city said that every tree was inspected by arborists with no financial motive.

Watch It Swallow An Entire Tree In Seconds - July 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

They are called excavator mulchers. That's polite. What they really do is swallow trees. This one, a DAH Forestry Mulcher from Quebec's manufacturer Denis Cimaf, consumes a 30-foot-tall, mature spruce (starting at the top, landing at the bottom) in 15 seconds. The tree that was, suddenly isn't.

I know, I know; these are incredible machines. They can eat from the top down or topple trees and swallow sideways. They can prune, mulch, make thickets disappear in no time. They can carve ski trails, do road repair, help landscapers, speed up construction. They are crazy fast.

That's their best feature. They are so much faster than the moss that gathers on dying trees, than the woodpeckers, owls and chickadees that sculpt homes in old tree stumps. These high-performance brush cutters are built for busy humans. Of course birds, fungi, slugs, snails, millipedes need to stay busy, too. They need trees to pull apart.

Which is why I'd like to propose a new machine: What if the engineers at Denis Cimaf created a Giant Tree Plucker, one that yanks trees whole from the ground and deposits them in a clearing, set aside for forest critters? Call it a Banquet Center For Beetles, an All-You-Can-Eat Zone that essentially says, thanks for the soil, thanks for the leaf removal, thanks for everything. Since we just built a fairway for a ninth hole, we thought we'd leave a little something for you.

Pipe dream? Maybe. But I bet there are engineers at Denis Cimaf who every so often like to see a woodpecker peeking out of its tree hole, or a soft pad of moss turning gold in the rain.

Thanks to Jason Kottke of kottke.org for introducing me to high-performance, industrial brush cutters.

Unhappy Bees Swarm Workers - July 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEWTON TOWNSHIP An effort to move bee hives in Lackawanna County went awry Monday afternoon when the bees swarmed the crew trying to save them.

One worker had to be sent to the hospital.

Charles Jewell of Newton Township called PennDOT last week because a tree in his yard near Clarks Summit was at risk of falling into the state road.

It became more complicated than that because that tree is also home to about 50,000 bees.

The attempt to remove the bee hives didnt go as planned.

A contractors plan to remove some tree branches for PennDOT became more complicated when they discovered five active honey bee hives at Jewells house near Clarks Summit.

I knew that there were some there and I had told them that there were bees but I didnt know there were nearly that many, Jewell said.

It became even more complicated when a worker for Jaflo Tree Removal went up in a bucket truck to begin taking down the tree branches and eventually the hives.

He ended up losing his helmet and he hit the controls, so the bucket was going all over the place until he finally put his vest up over his head and was able to put the bucket down in the yard. But he got stung 40 or 50 times, Jewell said.

Jewell says the worker was in a lot of pain and was struggling to breathe. He was taken to the hospital but other workers also suffered stings, tearing off their helmets and vests trying to get away.
