Ash tree removal program hits high gear in Vernon Hills - May 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Article updated: 5/21/2014 6:10 PM

Vernon Hills crews on Tuesday removed ash trees from the planter on Butterfield Road as part of its continuing battle against the emerald ash borer.

Vernon Hills' continuing assault on the emerald ash borer was made in a more visible locale Wednesday as crews removed trees from the decorative planter median on busy Butterfield Road.

"They talked about doing this work and got a nice day and jumped on it," said David Brown, village engineer and public works director. "We removed the green ash previously, now we're removing the white ash." When Butterfield was widened several years ago, Vernon Hills and other communities along the way paid a premium to have the median installed as a decorative element and agreed to assume maintenance for the plantings.

Backlash Continues over Colonial Building Tree Removal - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Backlash from the Colonial Building restoration project continues as Former Deputy Mayor Shannie Duff voiced her opinion on VOCM Backtalk with Pete Soucey. Resentment for the project started when the province removed some old mature trees from the property. Duff says if a private citizen wanted to cut down a tree on a historic site, they would have to go under the advice of a city arborist, however, the provincial government does not have to ask the city for permission. Duff says she doesn't know why the province would cut down trees that provided character to the Colonial Building.

She says she was shocked that they cut down those trees because they provide a beautiful canopy in that area.

Ward 1 Councillor Danny Breen also voiced his concerns on the project saying he saw a presentation for the restoration project, but Breen says it didn't go into much detail.

He says it initially looked like a good project but the removal of the trees is an issue he didn't know about.

Rules stump tree fans in La Caada Flintridge - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Since La Caada passed its new tree ordinance in March, opponents have been crawling out of the woodwork.

One resident is circulating an online petition to repeal the ordinance, while another wants to look into having the city's "Tree City USA" status revoked by the Arbor Day Foundation, which has granted the title to 3,400 American communities since 1976.

Legally, according to city staff and one Arbor Day Foundation representative, those efforts are not likely to bear fruit, but residents are aiming to keep the issue in front of the public.

"If everybody cut down their trees, La Caada would look like Palmdale," said Larry Moss, the landscape architect who posted the petition to the website change.org. "If the city has to be tougher to protect our trees, then they have to be tougher."

The document has garnered 61 signatures and will be presented to Council when the 100 signature threshold is met, he added.

Petitioners protest that, with the exception of native oaks, sycamores and deodar cedars planted in historic sections of town, homeowners may cut down any and all trees on their properties.

Some want protections to be more expansive, while others want to have more input into construction projects that threaten local tree canopies.

"When you compare our policy to our neighbor Pasadena, there's a considerable gap," resident Cameron Crosby said at a May 5 City Council meeting. "We have three protected species, Pasadena has 126 there is a problem here."

Crosby and his La Forest Drive neighbors petitioned, unsuccessfully, in March to protect large pines on a lot being developed next door. He said La Caada had no right to be considered a "Tree City" if it would allow a homeowner to remove 20 of the lot's 23 trees.

"I don't think we deserve it," he said of the designation. "It ought to be taken away."

Charlotte Tree Canopy Action Summit meets - May 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Charlottes tree-planting goals and proposed state legislation that could undermine local tree ordinances were focuses of the third annual tree canopy summit on Monday.

Hosted by the public-private collaborative partnership TreesCharlotte, the meeting at Freedom Park drew representatives of 30 organizations.

In its first two years, TreesCharlotte has planted about 11,000trees through partnership with schools, the Charlotte Housing Authority and other entities. Its goal is to plant 15,000 trees a year, all paid for with private money.

Charlotte City Council, noting a decline in the leafy cover, has set its own goal: a tree canopy over 50 percent of the citys area by 2050. The canopy is now at 47 percent, according to a 2012 analysis, but has shown no net decline since 2008.

What were really trying to do is build community with such goals, City Manager Ron Carlee told the group. We want to build a place where people will want to live.

The canopy goal is ambitious because development will continue to take some trees, and aging trees will die. One percent of the citys tree canopy equals 100,000 trees.

A bill that is expected to come before legislators this year, meanwhile, has drawn attention from tree lovers.

A draft of the bill bans local ordinances that regulate the removal, replacement and preservation of trees on private property and would prohibit local tree ordinances such as Charlottes.

Legislators cited Charlottes $4,700 fine of a church in 2011 for improperly trimming crape myrtle trees as evidence of overreach by local regulators.
