MACOMB, ILL. -- The city ofMacombis getting a helping hand fighting the threat of theemerald ash borer.

Macombwas chosen to be one ofseven communities in the state to be part of a pilot program from theIllinois Department of Agriculture.

The city will get between $100,000 to $150,000 to pay for ash tree removal and replanting of new trees in the public right of way.

Outside crews will be responsible for the work.

Mayor Mike Inman says that the city is fortunate to be chosen for the program.

"There's municipalities all across Illinois where there's active infestation that are looking at millions, millions ofinfrastructure improvements to their interior tree program to replace these trees," Inman said. "We're hoping to nip it, so to speak in the bud with this program."

Macomb City Forester Tim Howe says that the infestation is already to close for comfort.

"We're right on the edge of emerald ash borer," Howe said. "It's in the city of Galesburg. It's in the city of Burlington. Both about 50 miles away."

ODESSA, Mo. Strong winds ripped through Odessa on Sunday afternoon, knocking out power and tearing down trees.

Tree removal crews worked all afternoon at an Odessa home where winds ripped a large tree out of the ground causing it to topple over into their bathroom. It was just one spot around the town affected by Sundays storm.

Toppled trees, pulled power lines and blown down billboards were among the damage. Even a semi-truck could not withstand the 60 mile-per-hour winds that hit Odessa on Sunday afternoon.

And that`s scary when you have family, not knowing how they are, if they`re safe or notso getting to talk to each and every one of them was a blessing, said Sharen Green, whose shed was damaged by the strong winds.

Now they are counting their blessings. Something Rick Jensen is also doing after a tree fell onto his house.

Very lucky that we werent home when it happened, said Jensen.

On Sunday his bathroom was filled with tree branches, ripped insulation, and a dangling ceiling fan.

If somebody had of been standing at the sink they`d not be with us now, said Jensen.

We actually covered this up in here because this came through there, he said about the damage to his home.

Its been a case of miscommunication between a Clifton Street resident and Young Shire Council who are yet to reach an outcome in regards to the removal of a potentially dangerous tree branch.

Its been a case of miscommunication between a Clifton Street resident and Young Shire Council who are yet to reach an outcome in regards to the removal of a potentially dangerous tree branch.

A letter was submitted to council in January by Mr Roy Jerrim who said he contacted council on more than one occasion in relation to a large gum tree with a large branch that over hangs his back fence, creating a dangerous situation.

He believes the branch is rotting in the main fork area which could see the branch break at any given time.

Mr Jerrims concerns followed several news reports of falling tree branches injuring and in some cases killing people around the country, including an eight-year-old girl in Sydney in February.

The 84-year-old is worried for the safety of his family, particularly his grandchildren.

Im worried when a big wind comes from the right direction that itll break off the biggest branch and fall in my yard, he said.

His pleas to council appear to have been misunderstood.

Council implied I wanted the tree removed which is false, Mr Jerrim said. I only want the dangerous branch removed.
