Arborist Benjamin Falk takes out a dead green ash tree in Boulder one killed by problems other than the emerald ash borer. (Cyrus McCrimmon, The Denver Post)
Trees hang around the house so long, it's easy to think of them as members of your extended family. You cherish them deeply, right down to their roots.
But sometimes, they've got to go.
Fortunately, fewer feelings are at stake with an elm than, say, your cousin Frank, but the separation can be just as emotional.
So, the first thing to consider when you're thinking about getting rid of a tree is to not get rid of it at all. A professional arborist is likely to tell you as much.
"In this climate, every tree we have is important," said Israel Showvaker, an arborist with I & E Specialties Tree Care, a family-run company based in Aurora. "If you can save it, it's worth saving."
A lot of trees that look hopeless might just need a professional pruning to get them growing in the right direction. That aspen may have aphids, but that can be treated easily with natural pesticides or even a forceful spray from a hose. Even a tree that's been struck by lightning and left looking like something out of a horror movie deserves a second chance, Showvaker said.
"If it's cracked in half or the trunk is split, sometimes we can cable it so it grows back together," he said.
Of course, not all trees can be spared. Homeowners have to put safety first. Nobody wants a tree that drops a branch big enough to take out a corner of the house or the car windshield (or worse, the next-door neighbor's windshield).
That can mean taking out the precious Colorado blue spruce you planted 3 feet from the house decades ago to celebrate the birth of your first child.

Albany resident Richard Thomas wants the city to stop with its plans of cutting down of a tree on Dawson Road.
The city planned to close lanes on Dawson Road Thursday to begin bringing down the tree but a judge has put a temporary hold on it due to Thomas request. Part of the tree, falls on Thomas' property.
"Two experts feel that this tree is 90 percent intact," Thomas said. "All it needs is a sanitary pruning and I'm all for that."
The city says it's in danger of falling and poses a safety hazard. Thomas says the city is being overly pre cautious "The city is over-reacting to a incident several months ago where a limb feel through a motorists windshield," Thomas said. "They're facing a lawsuit and they went back two days later and cut the tree down and they're going around cutting trees down on the city right away that might in their perception endanger the public."

The Waterstone/Otaihanga Road cycleway/pedestrian pathway is to be closed temporarily next week when work begins on removing trees which are encroaching on the rail line near the Otaihanga landfill.
Council is removing mainly poplar tree but with a few gums, on the eastern side of the Composting NZ site next to the landfill.
The reason for the removal is that many of the trees lean out across the railway, says Council Leisure and Open Space Asset Manager, Lex Bartlett.
"They are planted on former landfill so are relatively shallow-rooted.
"With stands of pines having been removed to the west as part of the Expressway project, these trees are more exposed to the prevailing north-westerly winds.
"If left as is, the fear is that they could come down over the rail lines or topple on to the overhead wires."
Weather permitting, work will commence on Wednesday 30 April and could take up to two weeks.
During that time the cycleway/pedestrian pathway will be closed when workers are removing the trees. If possible, the pathway will be opened after work hours, as long as the contractors feel it is safe.
Signs will be posted at either end of the pathway to alert cyclists and pedestrians of work in progress.
