BT Vancouver: New Bylaw Toughens Tree-Removal Rules - Video
The subject of removing two large oak trees on Monroe Street near the intersection with Freeman Avenue will be discussed at a Public Hearing April 28, at 3:30 at Town Hall.
The Town of Stratfords tree warden has received requests to remove the trees, so the Town posted a notice of that request on the trees, so others could express their feelings about the possible removal.
Since that notice at least a couple of residents have contacted the Town and The Star saying they do not want the trees removed. When an objection is received by the Town it may schedule a formal public hearing.
Administrator of Conservation Brian Carey, who will make a ruling after the hearing, said the trees are not diseased.
A resident of 134 Monroe Street, where one of the two noticed trees looms over the property, told The Star that falling limbs from the tree have twice damaged cars in the driveway, so that now, when there is a storm his moves the cars to a nearby school property. He said also his family sleeps on the first floor during storms because of the fear of part of the tree crashing through the roof of the house.
The tree in front of his house has grown through the sidewalk.
Carey said also that the Town cannot be expected to go out and remove all trees that are perceived to threaten property.
Another resident, Chuck Petrovich, told The Star that he is knowledgeable about environmental matters, and the two large trees should be preserved for historical reasons and for all of the oxygen that they produce.
Some residents want those two large trees on Monroe Street removed, and others want them to remain, so the Town will hold a Public Hearing April 28. Greg Reilly photo.

Tree removal goes to public hearing

Santa Cruz >> A local tree activist is working to shed light on the pending removal of what she says is the oldest of only three red horse chestnut trees in the city.
Gillian Greensite of Save Our Big Trees is disputing a city Planning Commission ruling that the tree give way for the development of a four-story Hyatt Place Hotel at 407 Broadway.
The 110-year-old tree is one of many battles Greensite has taken the city to task over.
In response, City Planning and Community Development Director Juliana Rebagliati said the city was advised by qualified experienced licensed arborists who assessed the Broadway tree in preparing for city decisions, and that their information was accurately presented.
"When the project was considered it was determined that it could not be reasonably redesigned or altered to accommodate the tree," Rebagliati said by email.
For Pat Starr, joining the second day of the small Save Our Trees "vigil" on Broadway this week was close to her heart. She and her brother were born at what was her family's property for nearly the first half of the last century.
"To me, that tree was like the sentinel, it made me feel safe," Starr said of her childhood during World War II. "It's always been a sacred tree it's got a soul of its own."
Starr said she has regularly visited the "old homestead" and the tree in the years since the property was sold in 1956 and went on to become home to two churches. She also spoke out against plans to remove the tree in 2011, when hotel developer Tejal Sood sought project approvals from the Santa Cruz Planning Commission.

Activists vying for Santa Cruz tree protection
Workers cut back trees on Route 110 between downtown and White Hills for the United Illuminating tree-trimming program, which has been criticized for being too intensive.
Ongoing tree-trimming work by United Illuminating is causing some concerns, especially about the impact on the rural character of the White Hills neighborhood.
To see century-old maples halved is very disturbing to the community, said Renee Marsh, who lives in White Hills.
While she understands the need for pruning to protect the power lines, this is unilateral and indiscriminate removal of trees for a set distance, said Marsh, a member of the Olde Ripton Garden Club in Shelton.
Marsh said White Hills is a place that people visit for its country charm, especially in the fall when they go to vineyards, apple orchards and pumpkin patches, and shes unsure there will be much foliage to admire this autumn.
Joyce Donnelly, the garden clubs president, also is unhappy about the extent of the work.
This is very bad, Donnelly said. Theyre basically leaving the trees cut in half. I cant see how they will survive plus, they look ridiculous.
Crews are removing all the branches near the power lines, but leaving the branches away from the lines untouched, leaving odd-looking trees behind, Donnelly said.
