Oak Tree Kitty - Getting Paul Nelson TO the kitty
Our knight in shining armour!!! After four days of calling all kinds of tree services, light, phone, cable, anyone with a bucket that would reach up that high.... all to no avail. Seems cats aren #39;t that important to many... including the town of Haddam who didn #39;t make so much as one fucking call to try and get this poor treed cat to safety. She spent five days and four nights up in that tree, one whole night and day was rain coupled with temps in the mid thirties. I finally phoned yet another tree service.... NELSON #39;S TREE REMOVAL!!! Within minutes of leaving them a message, Paul Nelson himself phoned me and we arranged to meet mid day. This saint of a man didn #39;t charge me a dime for his time and effort. Something I will never forget. I offered him lifetime dog training as a small token of my appreciation. I simply HAD to hug him... poor guy just didn #39;t know what to do. I #39;m sure he was thinking... "OH NO!!! A HUGGER!!! LOL I want to name her in his honour but Paula doesn #39;t cut it for me, and Nelson is kind of butch sounding... don #39;t you think? SO for now, she #39;s Nelsa. ๐ I can finally collapse and sleep tonight. hearts; Aaaahh blessed sleep. hearts; From:Camille ChristieViews:2 0ratingsTime:01:30More inPets Animals

150 Year Old Oak Tree Removal
A sad day... Our 150 year old oak has been dying at an accelerated rate, year- by-year for the last 10+ years. It is because of a large diseased cavity at the base of the largest of the three main limbs. This past year, there was no life on the other two large limbs, and very little life on the huge section with the cavity. It #39;s such a tall and heavy tree and the winds have been fierce, so it was "for the best" that we had (most of) her cut down. Still... It #39;s very sad. This was our favorite tree. ๐ Hats off to Dearborn Tree Service -- this was a huge project, in between three houses, two garages, a power-line, a hand-built picket fence, and numerous other trees that we wanted to preserve. Their crew expertly thwarted Murphy #39;s Law, and completely avoided even the slightest mishap. Not one thing went wrong and they did a perfect job cleaning up the debris! The city of Cupertino is looking at possible changes to how protected trees are removed from private property. The city council held a lengthy study session Nov. 5 to discuss the matter and give city staff some clues on tinkering with the city's protected tree ordinance.
The city council and staff will look at possible changes, including the list of protected trees--which native trees and which tree sizes are on the list--and making a tree removal violation an infraction instead of a misdemeanor.
Last month, the council asked staff to look into reviewing the city's protected tree ordinance, which has not been updated or amended since 2007. At that time, the council was concerned about the reported illegal removal of protected trees without proper city review and permits.
A permit is required for the complete removal or severe pruning of heritage trees or specimen trees, including native oak trees, California buckeye, big leaf maple, deodar cedar, blue atlas cedar, bay laurel, California bay and Western sycamore.
The city has a number of options on how to proceed, including increasing or decreasing regulations in some or all different types of residential zones. If the ordinance is amended, the city would be subject to the California Environmental Quality Act and some level of environmental review will depend on the scope of the amendment, according to a city staff report.
City staff conducted a survey
A few public speakers at the Nov. 5 study session said they'd like the city to keep trees protected.
"I think it's a good ordinance. I'm very, very proud of the ordinance the city of Cupertino has for protetcted trees, trees in general. Most modern cities in Silicon Valley have tree ordinances," said Jennifer Griffin, a resident of Rancho Rinconada.
In 2007, the council was looking for ways to encourage property owners to get tree removal permits from city hall before removing protected trees and not resorting to removing trees illegally. The council looked to increase penalties on protected trees that were being removed without permits.
In 2007, the council changed the ordinance to allow the city's community development director to approve removal of protected trees. Previously, approval was required by the city's planning commission for all trees.

Laminated root rot and Douglas fir trees are both native to the Pacific Northwest. An increasing infection of the rot in these towering green giants in areas where human traffic is high has caused alarm for the park service. The solution is tree removal.
Weve got over 5,000 acres of forest. This [tree removal] is a small percentage of the park around high-use areas so that we are able to keep it open for visitors in a safe manner, said Park Manager Jim Schuh. Stuff like that has to happen, otherwise wed have to shut down completely excluding people.
The tree removal begins in the park on Thursday and cutting and associated hauling and cleanup will potentially continue until the end of March, when tourists will start flocking to the island.
The plan, spearheaded by Robert Fimbel, with the Washington State Parks Stewardship Program, calls for patch cutting and thinning in three areas of the park, which include the surrounding areas of the Environmental Learning Center, the primitive campground and the upper part of the north end campground. The areas are high priority because of the year-round and seasonal living quarters by the ELC and overnight guests at the campgrounds.
The fungus
Last February, the park held a meeting to discuss laminated root rot, which is a fungus spreading by root-to-root contact between trees. It does not spread through soil or air on its own. It can remain viable in stumps for up to 50 years, infecting any new trees susceptible to the disease.
The root rot is so effective and aggressive where you have stands of pure Douglas fir, whose roots are growing together, overlapping, then graphing together, Fimbel said.
This interconnected root system makes survival difficult. Imagine typhoid fever sweeping through the over-populated slum cities of India.
Douglas firs can fall without warning when their roots are rotted, and measuring 40 inches and weighing more than several tons, these giants can cause damage when they hit the ground, especially when campers are in the area.
In other Washington State Parks, Fimbel has seen trees that looked green and healthy during the summer that with no warning literally fell over.
