Trim Mouldings - January 18, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bosley Mouldings manufactures an enormous variety of mouldings. Some are ornate and quite deep. Others are delicate and discreet. Mouldings can be built for use as base mouldings, crown mouldings, chair-rail mouldings, or any other number of functions. When it comes to decorating with trim mouldings (as opposed to crown or base mouldings), slim styles are usually the way to go. Slender trim mouldings can be used to line the edges of stairs, built-in furnishings, and other tricky spots.

Slim trim mouldings can also be used to decorate walls. Unlike chair-rail mouldings, which are meant to run the length of a wall, trim mouldings can be artfully placed on a wall to create architecture where none exists. Mouldings are usually named for their function (i.e., base mouldings for baseboards, casing mouldings for casework), so trim mouldings placed on walls might just as easily be called wall mouldings.

A creative use of wall / trim mouldings can absolutely transform a room--particularly if that room is boxy, drab, or dull. Let your imagination be your guide: since Bosley Mouldings can custom-make any moulding you can imagine, inspiration is your only limit.

Bosley Mouldings has distinguished itself as a premier manufacturer of architectural and picture frame mouldings. For more than 90 years, the Bosleys have milled, crafted, and finished the finest wood products imaginable. Their mouldings, casework, and doors can be found in Japan, France, Australia, the Caribbean Islands, and a number of other countries in addition to their native United States.

BMW i3 review: A city car for the future - December 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Elle Cayabyab Gitlin / Aurich Lawson

With the new i3 electric vehicle (EV) city car, BMW is makinga pretty clear statementthe company is serious about designing and building cars properly adapted for the 21st century. Its a radical departure from the Bavarian automakers mainstream offerings, looking like little else on the road. In fact, its looksalone are polarizing enough for some people to dismiss it instantly (looking at you, Senior Reviews Editor Lee Hutchinson). But keep an open mind about the i3'sappearance, and you too may discover that its actually a very impressive little machine.

The i3 is part of a two-car 'capsule collection' called Project i, the other half being the stunning i8 hybrid sports car (first seen as a concept car in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol). The Project i cars use a range of alternative and sustainable materials in their construction along with electric or hybrid powertrains, but the automobiles retain BMWs traditional emphasis on driving dynamics. Whats more, like the Tesla Model S, they aim to do so without the hair shirt that can be all too common with EVs. We plan to take a closer look at the i8 in the coming months, butBMW was kind enough to supply us with an i3 for a few days recently. Of the two, the i3 is undoubtedly the more relevant, particularly since it doesnt come with a six-figure price tag. Butwith itsunusual aesthetic and the still-in-progress adoption of EV infrastructure, is the i3 the car for an efficiency-minded city dweller?

Theres no denying it, the i3s exterior is radical and attracts some attention: not as much as a bright yellow Corvette perhaps, but over the course of a week several people approached us as we were parking or stopped in traffic wanting to know more about it. We got more than a few double takes from people in other cars while on the road as well. Whats certain is that the i3clearly signals to people that youre driving something different, an effectthe Toyota Prius benefited from in the beginning as well.

The i3s body shares some traits with other cars designed primarily for an urban environment (such as the Mercedes-Benz Smart). It has a wheel at each corner and very short overhangs, including a very short hood. However, unlike most cars designed for cities, the i3 isnt a two-seater. Whats more, despite the compact external dimensions, it has quite a lot of room inside. In fact, BMW will tell you the car has the same footprint as its 1-series while maintaining as much interior room as the larger (and best-selling) 3-Series.

Similar to Teslas Model S, the i3 was designed from the ground up as an EV. The car has two principal components. What BMW terms the Life Module is a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer safety cell, and this sits atop an aluminum Drive Module containing the powertrain and batteries. The electric motor can be found at the rear, between the rear wheels, as can the range-extender internal combustion engine when fitted. Keeping the mechanicals and the batteries low down imbues the i3 with a low center of gravity that belies its upright stance and pays dividends with regard to its handling.

Wood Trim and Moulding – Home – Orillia Trim & Door Ltd. - December 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

OTD is the largest full-line supplier of wood and MDF trim and moulding in Orillia including pine, oak, poplar, hemlock, mahogany, maple, cedar mouldings. Tip: Installing Crown Trim and Moulding

Installing any type of trim and moulding has its challenges and rewards. Prior to installing your crown moulding it is best to go around the room and put a pencil or chalk line along the wall where the bottom of the moulding will touch the wall. This distance, measured from the ceiling down on the wall is what we consider the height of the moulding and is dependant on the size of the crown moulding installed. You will likely install the moulding slightly higher or lower as you go along if you do not have a mark on the wall as a guide.

It is usually best to put an adhesive (PL Premium, etc.) on both edges of the moulding and on the joint between each piece of crown moulding. This will assist in holding the crown moulding up during installation. It will also prevent the moulding from separating down the road.

A change in temperature from summer to winter and back will cause your walls to expand and contract so if you dont put adhesive between the seams you will begin to see ugly gaps between each piece of trim and moulding. First, apply a continuous bead of adhesive on the moulding, and then put it up in place on the wall. Using a finish nail gun to hold crown moulding snug to the wall and then finally wipe off any excess adhesive that might ooze out.

When you are joining two pieces of moulding along a straight part of a wall you can either do a butt joint or a mitred joint. With wood crown moulding there tends to be slight variations in thickness of the pieces so it is customary to do a mitred joint to make a smooth transition. MDF or vinyl crown trim and moulding are typically uniform in thickness so you can use a simpler butt joint.

Mitred joints of trim and moulding are an art unto their own and not covered herein. When creating a butt joint you are just joining the two pieces of crown moulding together at a zero degree angle. To create a butt joint, first piece remove 1/8 off of the ends of both moulding pieces with a mitre saw to create a clean, smooth end. If it will be going into a corner leave the length of the crown moulding about 1/16 longer than needed so it will apply pressure into the joint. Make sure you use a good adhesive between the joints to prevent it from ever separating during seasonal temperature and humidity changes.

Use a lightweight spackling like DAP DryDex to effectively hide any nail holes. Note that the caulk will shrink slightly when it dries and you will see little dimples when the caulking dries. A slight sanding will smooth these out before painting.

Once painted you would have to strain your eyes to ever find the seams or nail holes.

There are advantages and disadvantages of painting before or after installation of any trim andmoulding. Painting the trim andmoulding in advance goes very quickly. But, after you install any trim and moulding, there will be spots like the nail holes, the seams and the corners where you will have to touch up the paint.

If you want wait until after you install the trim andmoulding to paint, then you will have a be up and down the ladder and you will have to tape of your ceiling and wall if it is not yet painted.

2015 Fiat Doblo starts at 1,000 less than current model - December 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The new Fiat Dobl has been unveiled, with a revised range for the UK market.

The fourth generation of the Fiat Dobl, which has achieved 300,000 sales since it was first launched in 2000, features a restyled front end for 2015 with a sculpted bonnet; new front wings; distinctive new headlamps and a bold new grille.

Other improvements to the 2015 Dobl include lighter and more precise gear changes, a more responsive throttle pedal, new instrumentation and better noise insulation.

The UK range has been completely revised for 2015, offering better value on key models and aligning it more closely to customer expectations in the segment.

Safely Remove A Non-Load Bearing Wall - November 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

You can save on remodeling by preparing a space as much as possible before the builders arrive. With the proper tools, removing a non-load bearing wall is a simple task, and loads of fun.

First, make sure the wall you want to remove isnt load bearing and shut off the breaker if there is power running to an outlet or switch in the wall.

Then assemble your tools, which will include: a reciprocating saw, a flat/pry bar, a box cutter, and a hammer. You should also wear work gloves and eye protection (unlike Josh in the above video from eHow).

Start by removing any trim or moulding using your flat bar and hammer. Then use your knife and cut through the tape and mud that is at the seams along the ceiling and corners.

Then the fun begins! Using your hammer, break through the plaster and pull it off to reveal the studs. Remove the vertical studs using your recip saw and pry up the floor studs with your flat bar. Check out the video above to see the process in action.
