Neighborhood of the week: Lake Forest West - October 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you've been wondering what's happening at the corner of Ramsey Road and Canfield Avenue recently, wonder no more. What's happening is the opening of Lake Forest West.

Lake Forest West is one of the newest neighborhoods on the northern edge of Coeur d'Alene. But its location, nestled as it is amongst established neighborhoods, affords the best of both worlds. Homeowners can help determine how their new community develops while taking advantage of the amenities afforded by the other, older communities around them.

And then, there are the trees. The beautiful, mature, towering trees.

"Buyers love that the builders are leaving as many trees as they can," said Brad Richmond, a Realtor with Northwest Realty Group, representing Hallmark Homes. "They left as many trees as they could to give it that mature feel. The trees are the big thing."

Termac Construction and Hallmark Homes are the builders operating in Lake Forest West. One of the benefits of having quality builders in this neighborhood is that the homes aren't a jumbled mix of professional and owner-built houses. There's a consistency that speaks of care and thoughtful planning.

Hallmark Homes is striving for that "northwest Craftsman feel" with their homes, featuring earth tones, natural materials, and houses tucked into the trees. The lots in Lake Forest West are wide, averaging 80 feet, but not super-deep, Richmond pointed out. The layout is perfect for homeowners who want elbow room, but would rather not spend their weekends maintaining a large yard. "There's plenty of room to store your toys," Richmond said.

In Lake Forest West, Hallmark Homes is including a wide variety of features usually considered upgrades by other builders. "Hallmark offers the best standard features in the business," Richmond said. And then there are the warranties: lifetime on the roofing, lifetime on the laminate floor, and 10-year structural.

In the bath and kitchen, you'll find granite, with tile backsplashes. Elsewhere are hardwood floors. Gas fireplaces. Staggered Huntwood custom cabinets in the kitchen, with crown moulding. The doorways are arched and the ceilings soar to 9 feet, lending an elegant, spacious feel to the living spaces. Upgraded Craftsman trim packages. For your comfort, there's central air conditioning and the most efficient furnace in the industry.

Outside, the front and rear yards are landscaped with sprinkler systems. Homes have HardiePlank siding, carriage-style garage doors, stone columns and beam accents.

Homeowners select their own lighting, flooring, etc., from specified vendors, so you'll play an important role in creating your dream home.

The Hyundai New Generation i20 - October 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

New Generation i20 space and substance meet style and refinement

PARIS -- October 2, 2014: With the launch of its latest model, the New Generation i20, Hyundai Motor Europe is continuing its successful presence in the B-segment, highlighted by almost a million sales since 2002. The popularity of the original i20 has made it one of the companys best-selling cars in the region. The key aims of the new model are to open Hyundai Motor Europe to an even wider audience, further develop perceptions of the brand and confirm Hyundais strategic focus on Europe.

The New Generation i20 has been designed and developed in Europe, and three key attributes in particular underline how it meets the needs of European consumers: class-leading interior space, high-technology and comfort-enhancing features, and clean, refined design.

Hyundais third-generation B-segment vehicle highlights a significant step forward for the company since 2002, when Getz was first introduced to Europe. The New Generation i20 remains true to the principles of delivering value beyond expectations, exemplified by models including New Generation i10 and New ix35. The launch of this latest vehicle also means every Hyundai model in Europe has been renewed in the last five years.

Making its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October and entering production during the same month, the New Generation i20 will go on sale throughout Europe from November 2014.

Longer, lower and wider than the previous model, New Generation i20 was penned at Hyundai Motors Design Centre Europe in Rsselsheim, Germany. The new models character is inspired by the companys Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy, with elegant lines and a sculptured profile giving it a bold and sophisticated appearance. On the New Generation i20, Hyundai Motors key design element - the hexagonal grille - flows into stylish bi-function headlamps with LED daytime running lights.

Key styling cues are echoed inside the spacious cabin. Sitting on a new platform, the wheelbase has been extended by 45 millimetres to 2570 mm creating more space for occupants. Class-leading interior space 1892 mm combined front and rear legroom makes the New Generation i20 a true five-seater, while outstanding boot capacity of 326 litres heightens the vehicles versatility.

Designed to transport the driver and passengers in great comfort, the cabin features extensive use of soft-touch materials, as well as subtle piano black inserts and chrome detailing, to create a modern and sophisticated interior package.

The vehicle has also been fitted with a number of new technologies that provide levels of comfort and convenience normally associated with large-vehicle segments. For example, the inclusion of front and rear parking assist, heated steering wheel, static bending headlamps and automatic defog system are firsts for a Hyundai B-segment vehicles. Additionally, the lane departure warning system is another innovative feature, normally found in higher segments. The unique-in-class panoramic sunroof, able to both tilt and fully open, enhances the comfort and the sense of space for occupants, filling the cabin with natural light and fresh air.

The New Generation i20 is available with a choice of three Hyundai Kappa petrol and two U-II diesel power units. Proven powerplants have been carried over from the previous-generation model with a number of improvements to enhance driveability and ensure compliance with new Euro6 emission regulations while the 1.4-litre petrol engine is developed.

Mitsubishi Pajero warhorse still firing with MY15 updates - September 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

KEEP keeping on. That's the motto for Mitsubishi's Pajero.

The ageing off-roader has been upgraded for 2015, gaining some styling tweaks, more features and most importantly lower pricing.

Reduced to a three-model offering, the Pajero still starts from $50,990 for the base model GLX manual but the range topping Exceed automatic is now $65,990 - an $8000 reduction.

Exterior changes include a different front bumper, chrome radiator grille and spare tyre cover design. Mitsubishi has massaged the interior with a new centre panel design and chrome air-conditioning dials. Seven seats are now standard across the range.

Automatic models come with improved NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels, with extra acoustic insulation in the dash. Mitsubishi says noise absorbing material has been added to the engine hood, top cowl, floor area, headlining, rear quarter trim and front transmission tunnel area. A noise insulation layer has also been added to the laminated firewall material.

Three trims are available, GLX, GLS (which replaces GLX-R and VRX) and Exceed.

Basic GLX equipment includes 18-inch alloys, front LED daytime running lamps, privacy glass and chrome outer door handles and mirrors for added style, high intensity discharge headlamps and a rear differential lock.

GLS adds Mitsubishi Multi Communication System with sat nav, reversing sensors, automatic wipers and lights, as well as heated and power front seats and partial leather seat trim.

The top-shelf Exceed gets an electric sunroof with slide and tilt, sport pedals, chrome windscreen and side protection moulding, a wood and leather four-spoke steering wheel and automatic high beam.

"The Pajero nameplate has rightfully earned its reputation for legendary off-road performance through decades of development and success in motorsport," Mitsubishi Motors Australia executive director of marketing Tony Principe said. "The updated 2015 Pajero range is packed full of features and offers the ultimate in premium four-wheel driving with no compromise on value."

How this female designer created the perfect man cave - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Colleen McGill has been designing for close to 20 years, imparting her keen sense of classic style and subtle luxury to upscale homes and vacation properties in Toronto, Calgary, Montreal and Florida. The Globe asked McGill to talk about a recent project that illustrates her principles of good design.

The design brief: This busy, young Toronto family was expecting their fourth daughter when the wife asked me to create a quiet, manly escape for her husband, a place where he could relax and watch football. Like many Toronto houses, theirs had a room at the front of the house that was underutilized as a formal living room while most of the gatherings happened at the back in a more casual family room.

The challenge: The biggest issue was timing: The baby was on the way so I didnt have much time . Plus, the house had lovely old-world charm, but the walls were old plaster and the crown moulding and trim had cracks and visible imperfections.

What worked well: I am known for creating light, white airy spaces but for this room the masculine blue/grey suede wallpaper I chose created a striking backdrop of colour and texture that gave it a luxurious envelope of saturated blues. The brass elements gave the room warmth and played to the old-world mens club feel but in a more modern way.

I decided to paint the bookshelves, ceiling and trim the same dark colour. Without costing a lot, it added a remarkable level of sophistication and drama to the room. I used larger pieces in the space to make the room feel bigger and more inviting:

Design rule:One of the principles I learned years ago from Joe Brennan when I designed the interiors for his projects was always try and play up the inherent architectural elements in a home. If they dont exist add some. In this case the existing marble fireplace mantle with gold accents was ideal.

I find that smaller spaces look great in dark colours a saturation of colour creates drama and an incredible effect.

Try to create height in a room by adding vertical elements to make the room seem taller. I often hang drapery high to create a feeling of grandeur and openness.

Favourite aspect of this project: Each element of the design makes the whole room special. However, the blue Tuxedo Sofa (which is part of my Plum Furniture line) is so handsome it became the centrepiece. It is just the right length for a tall man to lie down on and watch a game and it is extremely comfortable with its generous depth and down-filled pillows. Staff
