Worker falls off building at University of Alaska campus By Weston Morrow wmorrow@newsminer.com newsminer.com

FAIRBANKS A window washer working on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus fell several stories from the side of the Elvey Building on Friday afternoon.

The man, whose name has not been released, was cleaning windows on the exterior of the building when he fell from his post about 2:15 p.m. Friday. The University police and fire departments responded to the incident. When paramedics arrived on scene the man was conscious and able to talk with first responders, according to Capt. Forrest Kuiper with the University Fire Department.

The man told paramedics he had been cleaning windows on the third story of the building when he fell, Kuiper said.

There was nothing visible that showed where he was working at all, so that was based just on what he told us, Kuiper said.

Paramedics put the man on a backboard and transported him to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, according to Kuiper.

University spokesperson Marmian Grimes said she did not have information on the victim. Window washers are contracted workers and not university employees.

The Elvey Building is seven stories tall and can be recognized by the large satellite-tracking dish antenna on its roof. It houses the UAF Geophysical Institute.

Allesley woman, 93, left penniless after window cleaner plundered her savings - September 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A window cleaner preyed on a 93-year-old customer clearing out her savings account down to the last penny.

Joshua Bruce, 19, is now behind bars after taking the Coventry womans pension card and stealing money from her Post Office account.

After the thefts were discovered, the defendant was caught because police were waiting for him when he returned to his vulnerable victims home.

Bruce, of Jardine Crescent, Tile Hill, was jailed for six months by a judge after he admitted four charges of fraud and one of possessing cannabis.

At the crown court in Leamington, prosecutor Tim Sapwell said Bruce knew his aged victim because he worked for the person who had the contract to clean her windows.

The pensioner had a Post Office account into which her pension was paid every fortnight, and a friend withdrew money from the account on her behalf for her to pay for food deliveries and so on.

Bruce turned up at her home in Allesley on May 21 to clean the windows, and he also cleaned out the guttering.

When he had finished he went inside where she gave him something to eat, and while he was there he walked round the house on the pretext of going to the toilet, during which he took her Post Office card and pin number from her purse.

He withdrew 300 from her Post Office account and later replaced the card, but took it again on three further occasions to withdraw 200, 300 and, on June 2 after checking the account balance, 272.81.

He must have known that last withdrawal represented the cleaning out of her account, said Mr Sapwell.

RSPCA investigate after reports of kitten thrown from van window then driven over - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The RSPCA are investigating after a kitten was reportedly hurled from a van window then driven over.

An eyewitness alerted the charity of the horrific incident which left the little animal dead in Oldham, on Thursday morning, September 18.

The passer-by said a man threw a young cat from a blue transit van on Blackshaw Lane in Royton, then crushed it under the vehicle.

Oldham Council sent a street cleaning team to recover the animal and keep it in storage until its owner could be found.

A spokesman for the animal charity said: The RSPCA has been contacted by a member of the public who said they saw a man throw a kitten from a blue transit van and run over it on Thursday, September 18. The incident happened on a country lane called Blackshaw Lane in Royton, Oldham, at approximately 9am.

An officer attended the scene that afternoon but the kitten wasnt found.

A spokesman for Oldham Council confirmed that they received a call at 1.30pm on Thursday reporting a cat had been run over.

A town hall street cleaning team was sent to Blackshaw Lane and recovered a dead animal before the RSPCA arrived.

Shortly after the incident, an eyewitness account was posted on the I Love Shaw Facebook page.

It read: Walking home from dropping my child off at school on blackshaw lane on the corner of Cornish way in Royton at approx 9am this morning a blue van with a sick twisted person threw a small young cat out of the window and then run it over with the back wheels, it shortly died afterwards after running towards me and my friend on the path, my friend comforted it and stroked it until it passed.

Shotgun and cleaning solution added to homicide trial evidence - September 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A sawed-down shotgun and a container of all purpose cleaning solution were the focus in Tuesday's continuation of the trial for Jason Gardner, who is accused of shooting and killing Pennsylvania College of Technology student Terrell Henderson-Littles on Jan. 9, 2013.

Gardner and fellow gang member Mirad Shabazz were meeting with Henderson-Littles to buy marijuana when the slaying took place.

The second day of the trial began with testimony from Carl Farley, who discovered the murder weapon in a snow bank behind White Deer Run at 901 Vine Ave.

Farley was working as a maintenance man for White Deer Run at the time and observed a piece of wood protruding from the snow as he was putting trash in the business's dumpster.

On closer examination, he saw the wood working on the handle and assumed it was a gun. Farley notified the college police force and soon city police were on the scene to uncover the weapon.

City police Agent Raymond Kontz testified that he arrived on the scene after Farley's report and helped to uncover the gun, which he described as a sawed-off shotgun about a foot in length. The gun was uncovered just two days after police had searched the area for the weapon after Shabazz told state police that they disposed of the gun near a church.

The gun was processed by city police Lt. Arnold Duck. Duck told the court that, while he was examining the weapon, he discovered a red stripe around a safety button, indicating that the gun was in the firing position. Inside the barrel, he found a 12 gauge Winchester shell hull that showed the gun had been fired.

Duck said he did not perform a finger print test because the texture of the weapon would likely not yield results, but he did swab parts of the gun for a DNA test. Results of the test have not been shared in court.

Isaiah Fulton, a fellow gang member whom Gardner and Shabazz were visiting in early 2013, testified that Gardner did bring a gun with him on the trip, and kept it in a backpack. The gun, nicknamed "Bishop," was in the bag with Gardner at the time of the shooting, Fulton said.

After the shooting, Shabazz and Gardner left the scene in different directions, but eventually met up with Fulton and another friend before returning to the 807 W. Third St. apartment where Gardner and Fulton had been staying with Fulton's former girlfriend, Shontay Payton.
