Bremer donation boosts comfort, efficiency at Mount St. Benedict - June 23, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

A donation of $2,600 from Bremer Bank in Crookston to the Mount Saint Benedict will go toward the replacement of windows in the Good Shepherd Hall.

Together with funds raised by Mount Saint Benedict and funding from the Tri-Valley Opportunity Council, Inc. work will now begin in replacing many of the windows in the Good Shepherd Hall, allowing for energy conservation, warmth and comfort to the residents of this facility for aging sisters at the Mount.

In an energy audit of the Good Shepherd Hall done in the spring and summer of 2009 it was discovered that significant energy conservation measures were needed to bring the facility up to new and modern standards of energy conservation.

Tri-Valley initiated the energy audit and sought funding from the Minnesota Department of Commerce through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. It was later determined by the funding source that the work could not go forward due to technicalities of eligibility.

Still, with the commitment of the Mount Saint Benedict, Great Plains Natural Gas and the work of Tri-Valley, funds were raised from private individuals and groups to afford the attic insulation and air sealing of the Good Shepherd Hall with work completed in the spring of 2011. Nearly $5,000 in cost savings were achieved the first year. Left to be completed was the replacement of sixty-eight windows.

Thermolite Window System Provides Hurricane Protection for Indigo Garden District Hotel in New Orleans - June 21, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

South Bend, IN (PRWEB) June 20, 2012

The IndigoGarden DistrictHotel, which has been closed since 2008 after the economic devastation of Hurricane Katrina will be installing theThermolite Window Systemto mitigate noise and prevent its windows from being destroyed byhurricane winds.

The Thermolite Window System installation will begin in June 2012 and will be installed on the inside of thehotelas a supplement to its existing windows to help fortify the building from damage caused by window breakage and implosion as a result of hurricane winds.

Hotelmanagement was looking for a way to reduce noise transmission from room to room and also to protect the building--but want to make sure that any work didnt change the architectural look and feel of thehotel, stated Therm-O-Lite Inc. President Steve Champlin. The Thermolite Window System is a great fit for thehotelbecause we are able to reduce the noise levels, provide piece of mind, reduce their energy consumption and the system won't change the look of the windows.

Hurricane winds can cause significant damage tohotelsand other buildings when the windows are compromised. When the windows have imploded and broken, the air pressure in the building changes and can cause structural collapse and significant damage to the building--including causing the roof to lift off--and can be deadly to building occupants.

    About Therm-O-Lite Inc.

Since 1979, Thermolite has been a leading innovator in supplemental interior window systems. It is a GSA-certified contractor and work with the hospitality industry, governmental agencies, the U.S. military, commercial renovators, and historical preservation projects.

The patented Thermolite Window System is a one-of-a-kind alternative to traditional replacement windows. This 100% customized window system is designed to provide superior protection against bomb blast, audio espionage and hurricanes while reducing noise, sealing the building envelope and preserving historic architectural integrity. Manchester United Transfer News: Have United Found the New Nani? - June 19, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

James Rodriguez would be an excellent addition for Manchester United.

Should the Red Devils pick up the Porto sensation over the summer transfer window, they would add another world-class player to their already star-studded squad, as well as another excellent attacking option.

But they might just do it at the expense of Portuguese international and United legend Nani, who fears he's being frozen out of Old Trafforddespite dropping his asking price twice in order to renew a new contract with the club.

According to Mirror Football, the Red Devils see Rodriguez as a possible replacement for the winger should he depart from the club. They have reportedly been tracking the Colombian international for a while, and have even travelled to South America to watch the 20-year-old play.

Currently rated in the25 million range by his current club Porto, Rodriguez wouldn't come cheaply to Unitedalthough he has already indicated his enthusiasm and desire to play for the Red Devils.

For now, I keep thinking about Porto and about winning the Portuguese Liga title here. I am very happy here, but if you give me the option to go to United, I am not going to deny that I would like to play at a club like that. I can still give so much...

Rodriguez would no doubt be a strong player at Old Trafford given his versatility in midfield and attack, and at just 20, he would serve as a long-term signing for a club struggling with an aging midfield.

However, he must only be looked as a replacement for Nani should the winger move on over the summer transfer window.

The Portuguese star has admitted his current feeling of isolation from the team and management at United and would be open to a move should no deal be agreed upon between the two teams, but that is no reason why the Red Devils cannot secure his services for the next few seasons at the club.

What is becoming more apparent is the impact that Shinji Kagawa is going to have on Manchester United, who are now faced with the problem of having too much depth in their squad and being forced to leave world-class players on the bench.

49ers: Window of Opportunity is Nigh - June 19, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The window of opportunity is open wide right now, and when the San Francisco 49ers and their fans look through it they see nothing but sunny skies and a bright future.

Thats what the world looks like to an NFL team in June, especially one thats coming off a trip to the NFC Championship Game.

In the recently concluded Niners mini-camp, optimism reigned. New wide receiver Randy Moss and cornerback addition Perrish Cox got rave reviews. Alex Boone looked strong as a replacement for Adam Snyder at right guard. Tight end Vernon Davis who came up so big in the playoffs picked up right where he left off. And head coach Jim Harbaugh was the perpetual prince of positivity even about first-round pick A.J. Jenkins, the wide receiver from Illinois who showed up out of shape and often appeared lost and ineffective on the field.

Hes right on track, Harbaugh told reporters last week. A.J. Jenkins is going to be just fine.

Yet while there is justifiable reason for optimism, there are reasons for caution as well, and defensive end Justin Smith has served an important notice. His message: the future is now.

The entire defense has returned, key players are healthy, the offense should be better after a year under Harbaughs system and with the addition of some playmakers, such as Moss, Mario Manningham, rookie running back LaMichael James and veteran running back Brandon Jacobs.

But Smith says the time for the 49ers to win it all is now, during this window of opportunity. In the NFL, such a window can close quickly because of age and injury.

With some of the guys we have, and with free agency and things like that, were not going to be able to keep this team forever together, Smith told the Sacramento Bees Matt Barrows. Even age-wise, you know? The whole team wont be the same.

Im kind of stressing, Lets go about this in a way that were kind of focused. Were not rebuilding. Lets do it this year and see what happens next year.

Smith, 32, the dominating physical presence up front for the Niners, knows that the bulk of his career is over. If he wants to win a ring, it will have to be quick.

Hammers chase new quartet - June 19, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

West Ham co-chairman David Gold wants as many as four new signings before the transfer window shuts.

    Guti: Linked with West Ham

The Hammers begin the new season at home to Aston Villa before going to Swansea a week later.

By the time of their third game at home to Fulham the transfer window will be shut, and co-chairman David Gold hopes to recruit several new faces before then.

"We're connected with about 20 players," Gold told Sky Sports News. "What we hope to do is to maybe bring in two, three or maybe four players by the close of the window as we start off in the new season."

The likes of Mohamed Diame, Victor Wanyama and Spanish veteran Guti have been linked with the club, while Jussi Jaaskelainen has been lined up as a replacement for the departing Rob Green.

The goalkeeper refused the offer of a new contract and Gold said: "We did our very best and we're very sad that we have lost Robert. We wish him well."

'As long as you're up there …' — home remodel don'ts - June 18, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Plan on making a few updates to spiff up the house? Keep the "few" in mind.

    By By Richard Taylor, Zillow

Two demons wait for unsuspecting homeowners, hoping for their chance to gobble up time and money on new home and remodeling projects. The are called The Ripple Effect and Project Creep.

The Ripple Effect is the remodeling budget's worst enemy and can wreak havoc on small and large projects alike.

A window replacement is a simple, isolated project, right? But the interior and exterior trim must be replaced and painted, and the exterior siding may have to be reworked, especially if the new window isn't the same size as the old one.

And that's just the beginning. Once that window is replaced and the new window trim painted, the rest of the trim in the room looks bad by comparison, and so you decide to paint that, too. A pebble has been dropped in the pond, and the ripples have begun to spread.

What started out as a simple window replacement ends up as the refinishing of an entire room.

In new home projects, The Ripple Effect is more pronounced in open plan designs. With fewer walls to separate spaces, it's difficult to make flooring transitions from one room to another so more expensive flooring materials often cover more of the house. The lack of interior walls also requires a more expensive structural system and makes the placement of duct work and plumbing more difficult.

But The Ripple Effect can be controlled if you take a moment to consider the impact one project can have on other parts of the house. The root of the problem in the window replacement example is that a new standard-sized window won't exactly fit the existing opening, necessitating the replacement of the trim.

But a custom-sized window, carefully installed, might allow you to reinstall the existing trim inside and outside, and avoid The Ripple Effect entirely. Sure, you'll spend more on the window, but you'll save everywhere else and avoid The Ripple Effect.

Energy-Efficient Basement Windows | Save Energy Replacing Your Basement Windows. – Video - June 16, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

14-06-2012 15:07 | 1-877-664-6288 Basement windows are often overlooked in window replacement projects. Yet, in a typical home, the basement windows are the main source of energy waste among all other windows in the house. The heated air in the house tends to rise and escape through openings on the upper levels of a building. As a result, low pressure is created on the lower levels causing unconditioned outside air to be sucked in through openings in the lower levels. Typical metal frame window inserts, after a few years, become loose, rusty and leaky - not to mention very unsightly. They also tend to have single pane glass, which allows heat transfer to and from the outside. Mike Rusk joins Larry Janesky at the Dr. Energy Saver's Energy City -- a 40000 sq.ft energy conservation training facility located in Seymour, Connecticut -- to show us the differences between a conventional basement window, and an energy efficient one. Among many desirable features, an energy efficient basement window has a sturdy, waterproof vinyl frame that can be easily fitted into an existing enclosure, sealed air tight to prevent air leakages, and not rust when it comes in contact with water. Double pane windows will slow heat transfer through the glass, and the low-E glass tint will allow light in, but filter out the heat. Dr. Energy Saver energy conservation experts in Cleveland, Ohio replace windows of all types, but would like to warn homeowners while many other contractors ...
