In windows, the lower the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient - what tells the fraction of solar energy reflected away from a window - the more energy efficient the window.
It's among the things people shopping for quality, cost-effective replacements should be looking at, said Jones, owner of Tulsa Renew, a home improvement business that specializes in siding, window and door installations.
The rating measures on a scale from zero to one with most values ranging from .25 to .80. An SHGC value of .25, for example, means that 25 percent of available solar energy is penetrating a given window with that rating.
"The closer to zero you get, all that means is that you're going to keep out more heat," Jones said. A rating of .30 or lower is widely accepted as ideal.
Last week, the Federal Trade Commission ordered five companies to stop making exaggerated claims about the energy efficiency of their windows. The five companies promised their energy-efficient windows would cut bills by 40 percent to 50 percent, though the claims are unsupported, the FTC said in a press release.
The FTC named Pennsylvania-based Gorell Enterprises Inc., Maryland-based Long Fence and Home, LLLP, California-based Serious Energy Inc., Kentucky-based THV Holdings, LLC and Winchester Industries, also based in Pennsylvania, in its complaint.
"If a company is making big, big claims about how much money their windows can save, (consumers) want to get online and research that company," said Scott Burnett, owner of Burnett Inc. Windows and Siding.
At most, homeowners replacing windows can expect savings between 7 percent and 15 percent - this from the government-backed Energy Star program, which tests products against a set of standards laid out by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Windows alone can't make for those bigger types of savings, Burnett says. But combine other factors like attic and wall insulation and high-efficiency HVAC with window improvements, and the savings will go up.
Ratings matter and so do materials, Burnett says. The best materials for the frame and sashes, he said, are wood, fiberglass, vinyl or a composite of the three. When it comes to the glass pack, shoppers should look for the high efficiency, low-E glass, both business owners say.

NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C., Feb. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Window World, Inc., America's largest replacement window and home remodeling company, has announced the 2012 launch of its 'One More Day' campaign, a fundraising plan dedicated to providing St. Jude Children's Research Hospital with a full day of operating expenses. The initiative is headed by Window World Cares, the charitable foundation of Window World.
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120229/CL62250 )
The initiative was developed by a Window World store owner and embraced by Tammy Whitworth, chairman and CEO of Window World and co-founder of Window World Cares, to cover the additional costs that leap day will bring to St. Jude this year.
"One more day could mean the chance of a lifetime for these children," said Whitworth. "St. Jude ensures that no family ever pays for their child's care. We at Window World are honored to help make this possible."
Beginning in 2008, Window World set a goal of providing funding for one full day of operations $1.7 million for St. Jude. In 2011, Window World exceeded that goal by donating $2.3 million. In 2010, Window World Cares was named New Corporate Partner of the Year because of its ongoing involvement with St. Jude.
More than 200 Window World stores nationwide will donate toward a second day of funding for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Window World plans to execute a number of activities during the year to help meet the goal. One of the biggest events will be the Window World Family Reunion, an annual gathering that brings all of Window World together. The last two Family Reunions each raised more than $500,000 for Window World Cares. This year's reunion is scheduled to take place August 1 5, 2012.
Additionally, Window World raises funds through 'the Stinger,' a 2011 concept show car and tribute to the first ever winning Indianapolis 500 car, the 1911 Marmon Wasp. The Stinger showcases the signatures of more than 190 former Indy 500 starters. For each signature received, Window World makes a donation of $189 the price of a Window World replacement window to Window World Cares. To date, signatures on the Stinger have resulted in donations totaling more than $36,000.

For 50 years, the 4ft cross etched into the crematorium chapel window has been a poignant symbol offering comfort to mourners.
But all that is to change after town hall bureaucrats decided it might offend other religions.
And so even though there has not been a single objection the window is being taken out and replaced by a clear pane.
Cross row: The central window at Haycombe Crematorium, Bath, will be removed to appease members of other faiths
The decision has infuriated many in Bath, who see it as yet another example of Christianity being sidelined in a society obsessed with political correctness.
They include Hugh Mackay, 82, a former Christian missionary in Nigeria who lives nearby. It seems there is a determined secular campaign to try to obliterate religious heritage in our country, he said.
The council says it is not to upset people of all faiths but Ive talked to Hindus, Muslims and Jews and none of them have ever complained.

Jim Abraham is building a new house in Springfield and Joe and Helen Swaar want to make some improvements to their home in Mason City.
All three were at the Springfield Area Home Builders Association’s 2012 Home Expo Friday to get ideas for their upcoming projects. The Swaars checked out window replacement companies, and Abraham was looking for suggestions for both for inside and outside.
“We’re looking for some landscaping ideas, paint and closet organizing systems. We’ve gotten some great ideas,” Abraham said.
This year’s expo runs through Sunday at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. There are 140 exhibitors that specialize in everything from banking, building, and landscaping to flooring, garages and cabinetry.
Misty Buscher, director of the expo, said the show was set up for people just like Abraham and the Swaars.
“It’s very low pressure. People can come out and browse what’s new in the remodeling and building industry and not feel like they are being pressured to buy anything,” Buscher said.
It’s not uncommon for people building a new house to bring their plans to the show and talk to exhibitors, she said.
“On the remodeling side, we see people come out, and then come back the next day with measurements of their kitchen or bathroom,” Buscher said.
Joe and Helen Swaar said the window project has a sentimental side.
They lived in the same house outside Mason City for 47 years while Joe farmed. The house had a bow window that they enjoyed, but when they moved into Mason City eight years ago, their new house didn’t have such a window.
Bow windows protrude outward from the house. Inside, there often is a bench in the window.
“We decided that the thing to do was come down here to the home show and see if we can take the windows out and put a new one in. We’ve gotten several good ideas,” Joe said.
About 6,000 people attended last year’s home show.
Buscher a loan officer at Security Bank, said she has noticed an increase in the last two months in the number of people coming in to get loans for new construction.
“Interest rates are low, and people are starting to feel comfortable spending money again. Everybody was holding back for awhile,” Buscher said.

An exclusive glazing system known as CONSERVAGLASS SELECT™ is used in the manufacture of Four Seasons' beautiful, super energy-efficient, heavy-duty replacement windows. WASHINGTON, Feb. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Window World, Inc.®, America's largest replacement window and home remodeling company, sponsored a mission for the Veterans Airlift Command on February 19. Three wounded veterans traveled from Washington, D.C., to Meridian, Miss., to speak about their experiences to marines who are scheduled to deploy to combat zones. They have also planned this trip to Mississippi to visit a friend and fellow Marine.
USMC LCPL Kyle Carpenter, one of the passengers on the February 19 mission, was serving in Afghanistan when he was hit by an enemy grenade in 2010. Carpenter heroically threw himself on the grenade to shield his fellow Marine, losing his right eye and suffering other severe injuries in the process.
Dominic Davila and Rory Hamil were also aboard the flight to Mississippi. Davila had his right leg amputated below the knee as a result of an insurgent bombing in Afghanistan in 2009. Hamil lost his right leg in 2011 after stepping on an explosive pressure plate in Afghanistan. Fellow Marine William Romero was also on the flight.
"We're thrilled that we're able to give back to these veterans who have given so much," said Tammy Whitworth, chairman and CEO of Window World and co-founder of Window World Cares. "Several members of our Window World family are veterans so this cause is one that is dear to our hearts. We're proud to support such a great organization."

To date, Window World Cares has supported 23 missions for the VAC totaling more than 100 hours of flight time.
In addition to supporting veteran missions, Window World Cares has also dedicated a custom chopper built by Orange County Choppers to the VAC.
