Builders expo offers ideas to homeowners - February 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jim Abraham is building a new house in Springfield and Joe and Helen Swaar want to make some improvements to their home in Mason City.

All three were at the Springfield Area Home Builders Association’s 2012 Home Expo Friday to get ideas for their upcoming projects. The Swaars checked out window replacement companies, and Abraham was looking for suggestions for both for inside and outside.

“We’re looking for some landscaping ideas, paint and closet organizing systems. We’ve gotten some great ideas,” Abraham said.

This year’s expo runs through Sunday at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. There are 140 exhibitors that specialize in everything from banking, building, and landscaping to flooring, garages and cabinetry.

Misty Buscher, director of the expo, said the show was set up for people just like Abraham and the Swaars.

“It’s very low pressure. People can come out and browse what’s new in the remodeling and building industry and not feel like they are being pressured to buy anything,” Buscher said.

It’s not uncommon for people building a new house to bring their plans to the show and talk to exhibitors, she said.

“On the remodeling side, we see people come out, and then come back the next day with measurements of their kitchen or bathroom,” Buscher said.

Joe and Helen Swaar said the window project has a sentimental side.

They lived in the same house outside Mason City for 47 years while Joe farmed. The house had a bow window that they enjoyed, but when they moved into Mason City eight years ago, their new house didn’t have such a window.

Bow windows protrude outward from the house. Inside, there often is a bench in the window.

“We decided that the thing to do was come down here to the home show and see if we can take the windows out and put a new one in. We’ve gotten several good ideas,” Joe said.

About 6,000 people attended last year’s home show.

Buscher a loan officer at Security Bank,  said she has noticed an increase in the last two months in the number of people coming in to get loans for new construction.

“Interest rates are low, and people are starting to feel comfortable spending money again. Everybody was holding back for awhile,” Buscher said.

New windows will be custom made to the home's exact requirements with a choice of colors, styles and finishes that perfectly complement the home. Even better news, all of this comes at a moderate price point.

An exclusive glazing system known as CONSERVAGLASS SELECT™ is used in the manufacture of Four Seasons' beautiful, super energy-efficient, heavy-duty replacement windows. CONSERVAGLASS SELECT™ is available in double or triple pane options with both argon and krypton gas filling. By using the optimal glazing recipe, Four Seasons can match the vinyl windows to the heating and cooling needs of the specific local climate.

Four Seasons vinyl replacement windows are proudly made in the USA. Steel inserts can be also be added into the window frames if desired by the homeowner.

If areas where security is a concern, it's good to know that Four Seasons vinyl windows feature a number of additional safety and security features. Internal glazing beads prevent glass being removed from the exterior; 'pocket' sills stop burglars from 'jimmying' the windows open and dual positive action locks mean the windows are automatically locked when they're closed.

Window World Sponsors Mission for Veterans Airlift Command - February 22, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

WASHINGTON, Feb. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Window World, Inc.®, America's largest replacement window and home remodeling company, sponsored a mission for the Veterans Airlift Command on February 19. Three wounded veterans traveled from Washington, D.C., to Meridian, Miss., to speak about their experiences to marines who are scheduled to deploy to combat zones. They have also planned this trip to Mississippi to visit a friend and fellow Marine.

USMC LCPL Kyle Carpenter, one of the passengers on the February 19 mission, was serving in Afghanistan when he was hit by an enemy grenade in 2010. Carpenter heroically threw himself on the grenade to shield his fellow Marine, losing his right eye and suffering other severe injuries in the process.

Dominic Davila and Rory Hamil were also aboard the flight to Mississippi. Davila had his right leg amputated below the knee as a result of an insurgent bombing in Afghanistan in 2009. Hamil lost his right leg in 2011 after stepping on an explosive pressure plate in Afghanistan. Fellow Marine William Romero was also on the flight.

"We're thrilled that we're able to give back to these veterans who have given so much," said Tammy Whitworth, chairman and CEO of Window World and co-founder of Window World Cares. "Several members of our Window World family are veterans so this cause is one that is dear to our hearts. We're proud to support such a great organization."

To date, Window World Cares has supported 23 missions for the VAC totaling more than 100 hours of flight time.

In addition to supporting veteran missions, Window World Cares has also dedicated a custom chopper built by Orange County Choppers to the VAC. Pella(R) Windows & Doors Donates $30,000 to Homes for Our Troops - February 18, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

PELLA, Iowa, Feb. 16, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Energy-efficient window and door manufacturer Pella donated $30,000 to the non-profit organization Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) and helped raise additional cash, building materials and labor to support the national cause through its partners in THE PRO EXPO Presented by PellaSM program.

Pella selected Homes for Our Troops -- which builds homes for severely injured U.S. service members and their families -- as its charitable partner for THE PRO EXPO Presented by Pella held in 30 U.S. and Canadian markets in 2011. Pella asked its national partners and professionals who attended events to help support the charitable cause.

"Through THE PRO EXPO Presented by Pella events, we bring together builders, remodelers, contractors and architects to network, share ideas and attend educational seminars," said Chris Dana, trade marketing manager at Pella. "We were also proud to help raise awareness and support for Homes for Our Troops to help those who've sacrificed so much for our country and our freedom."

    How to help

Donations can be made through Homes for Our Troops' secure online fundraising site. For more information about home builds, visit the Homes for Our Troops website.

    Non-profit helps severely injured veterans

Since it was founded in 2004, Homes for Our Troops has assisted severely injured veterans and their immediate families by raising donations of money, building materials, and professional labor and coordinates the process of building a specially-adapted home that enables an injured veteran to live more independently. The homes provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at no cost to the veterans.

"Many veterans are returning home from wars in Iraq or Afghanistan with life-altering injuries sustained while defending the United States overseas," said Dawn Teixeira, executive director of Homes for Our Troops. "These American heroes need specially adapted homes that will allow them to regain their independence and help them and their families rebuild their lives."

Injuries include the loss of one or more limbs, varying levels of paralysis and traumatic brain injury. Some veterans also return with blindness, deafness or severe burns. They may be confined to a wheelchair or may utilize a wheelchair when they are unable to walk on their prosthetics. Their homes are no longer a place of comfort, but rather filled with barriers that make the simplest tasks difficult, if not impossible, Teixeira said.

    Homes designed for accessibility

Homes for Our Troops' specially adapted homes go beyond Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. They typically feature single-level, open floor plans, roll-in showers, roll-under cooktops and sinks, and other standard accessibility items. Depending on the severity of the injury sustained by the veteran, homes may also include specialized items like lift systems, keyless door entry and voice activation controls.

For customers who wish to maintain the interior look of wood windows with the performance benefits of vinyl, Champion Window introduces their new TimberBond® line of replacement windows. Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) February 16, 2012

For customers who wish to maintain the interior look of wood windows with the performance benefits of vinyl, Champion Window introduces their new TimberBond® line of replacement windows. This new technology fuses a long-lasting and realistic interior wood appearance, in either English oak, dark oak or cherrywood, to Champion’s already energy efficient vinyl window; complete with Champion’s exclusive Comfort 365 Glass®.

“Many homeowners cherish the charm of traditional wood windows but not the maintenance associated with them; meanwhile, others have tried windows with wood grain laminates or veneers fixed to the vinyl only to find the laminate or veneer fade, peel or crack over time,” said Denny Manes, Chief Executive Officer of Champion Window. “Champion’s proprietary TimberBond process fuses the wood-grain finish to the vinyl, keeping the color bonded to the surface without the worry of peeling or cracking.”

Watch a video about TimberBond Here: http://www.youtube.com/user/Championwindows

TimberBond utilizes the same technology that high-end automobile manufacturers use to create wood finishes in their cars. This state-of-the-art transfer process bonds the woodgrain pigment to the vinyl, creating an authentic looking and long-lasting wood appearance.

“By providing this technology, a first-of-its-kind in the window industry, Champion enhances its position as an industry leader providing customers with innovative, high-quality home improvement options for their window, siding, and patio room needs,” added Manes.

TimberBond vinyl replacement windows feature a real wood look in the interior with a choice of white, tan or any of Champion’s ColorBond™ Window colors to add an architectural element to the exterior of a home, that will increase its value and curb appeal while saving energy and maintenance.

The new TimberBond line is designed to be just as energy efficient as every replacement window manufactured by Champion; all are ENERGY STAR® rated, have earned the Good Housekeeping seal and carry the AAMA gold label. Plus, every Champion replacement window features Champion’s exclusive Comfort 365® glass, a superior glass that ensures a home will be energy efficient and that carpet, drapes and furniture will resist fading.

Lead Paint Hazards and Older Windows - February 15, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- If your home was built before 1978 and you still have the original windows, it's time to seriously consider replacing your windows --- especially if you have young children or a pregnant person living at home.

    (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120215/NY52241)

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the routine opening and closing of windows in homes built prior to 1978 can disturb lead-based paint around the windows, causing paint dust and chips to be released into the air. These lead particles are so potentially dangerous that the EPA now requires contractors to be trained and certified before they can perform any renovation, repair or painting projects that may have previously applied lead-based paint.

"Research indicates that the everyday activity of opening and closing windows creates friction that then allows invisible lead dust to enter the air," says Rick Nevin, a consultant to the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH). "Young children, who crawl on the floor where the lead dust has settled, can be especially at risk. Toddlers put their hands in their mouths … and after playing on the floor near a window, they can easily transfer the lead dust into their mouths. The ingested lead travels through the bloodstream to a child's developing brain, causing many types of neurobehavioral damage."

According to Nevin, one of the most important long-term investments a homeowner can make for the overall safety of a family is to replace older windows, using the EPA-approved lead safe renovation guidelines. "Replacing older windows is one of the best ways to reduce lead risks," says Nevin. "Make sure to use only a contractor that is certified in lead-safe work practices and strongly consider the use of ENERGY STAR® qualified windows, like the vinyl replacement windows offered by Simonton Windows®. These windows are a healthy choice for replacing older single-pane units. They're energy-efficient and a good value for the investment."

"At Simonton, we advocate that replacing older windows coated with lead-based paint with vinyl windows is a sensible step for homeowners who want to create a healthier home environment," says Gary Pember with Simonton Windows. "We believe Rick's research substantiates the replacement of all windows coated with lead based paint as a way to dramatically help reduce lead dust within that home."

Nevin explains that, according to his research funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), homeowners need to understand there are four key steps to completing a "lead-safe window replacement strategy" for the home. "First, they advise replacing all single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR qualified windows," says Nevin. "Second, stabilize any significantly deteriorated paint. Third, perform specialized cleaning to remove any lead-contaminated dust. And finally, perform dust wipe tests to confirm the absence of lead dust hazards after the clean up." Research results can be obtained at http://www.ricknevin.com/windows.html.

Style Line Series vinyl windows and doors feature a narrower profile, making for sleek, contemporary lines and maximum glass area for better views. Style Line also comes standard with the Milgard® SunCoat® Low-E insulating glass for energy efficiency; the safety and security of our Positive Action lock; and numerous design options with grids, obscure glass and seven Premium Exterior Vinyl Finishes in addition to the standard colors white and tan.

Style Line is also covered by the industry-leading Full Lifetime Warranty that covers every properly installed window and door for as long as the homeowner owns their home–including materials and labor. This fully transferrable warranty applies to owner-occupied multi-family dwellings as well. Our Commercial warranty provides similar outstanding coverage for business applications.
