MOBILE. Ala. (WALA) - Fred Steiner said his 85-year-old mother-in-law was scammed out of $140 dollars after two men went to her house, saying her driveway needed repairing.

Last week the elderly woman who asked not to be named saidshe told the men to go away, but the men returned Thursday, January 9 and starting paving her driveway then demanded $1,700 in payment.

I couldn't believe it was $1,700 dollars I said you've got to be kidding. I said I told you I didn't have the money for this where am I supposed to get it from? You don't just walk up and hand a senior citizen a bill for $1,700 dollars when I told you I didn't have the money, the woman said.

Steiner said the men cussed and harassed her until she gave them money and threatened to sue her if she didnt pay.

His mother in-law gave the men $140 and left. She then called 911 and reported the fact she believed she was scammed.

When she and Steiner later went to check on the driveway, they discovered puddles of liquid and right underneath the newly paved driveway was dirt.

It reminds me of some kind of used motor oil or a hydraulic fluid. It doesn't smell like what you would put on a driveway, Steiner said. It seems like theres a lot of water in it.

The grandmother claims there was no name on the truck driven by the two men and they never told her who they were.

Shortly after the story aired on Fox10 News, another man reported two men approached him earlier in the day but he turned them away.

If it will save anybody else from going through this they better think twice before the let anybody pave their driveway because I don't think he put anything worth while on that driveway, the 85 year old said.
