Long-term water damage has forced emergency repair work totaling more than $80,000 inside one of the city's most popular buildings.

Built in 1982, the 24,000-square-foot Milpitas Community Center at 457 E. Calaveras Blvd. once had a pond surrounding its outside perimeter.

"Foundations were locatedexposed tothe water and combined withclay soils, the foundation had settled over the years," according to Milpitas Public Works Director/City Engineer Jeff Moneda."As a result, the wood flooring inside the community center auditorium had separated, causing a potential tripping hazard for its users. Since the auditorium is used quite frequently, it was deemed necessary to expedite the repair in order to minimize possible claims to the city and potential accidents."

Saying most repairs were done over the holidays, Moneda added the scope of work included leveling the flooring, installation of water-proofing materials and about 4,500 square feet of new flooring.

"Since we were planning on painting the auditorium this year anyhow, the critical path for construction (was) to paint prior to the installation of the flooring," Moneda said. "The painting occurred a few days in advance of the flooring installation."

Milpitas City Council voted Jan. 21 to authorize staff to pay a not to exceed amount of $80,661 to two outside contractors. Milpitas-based B.T. Mancini Co. Inc. will be paid $51,079 for repairing the floors. Michael Dovgan, doing business as A Plus Painting, will be paid $29,582 for repainting the center.
