Tackling your kitchen for a complete remodel or even just to spruce it up a bit can make a world of a difference when it comes to presentation and even functionality. Many local designers shared some insight on the process and ways to get the job done even for homeowners on a tight budget.

Bridget Owens of Owens Cabinet, 1928 Stark Road, said there are many benefits of hiring a professional to get everything completed in a timely matter.

Design professionals have comprehensive knowledge in kitchen and bath design and planning guidelines for your health, safety, and welfare, as well as construction, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, Owens said. We are able to foresee any roadblocks and prevent any surprises in the remodeling process.

Owens said a good designer will remain current on local building codes, safety and environmental regulations, and be knowledgeable on new products and equipment.

The design professional you choose should be someone you can trust, and be able to assess your needs and wants to create a design that meets and exceeds these requirements, Owens said.

Denise Thomas, a designer with LeBeau Cabinets, 608 S. Saginaw Road, said there are many ways to freshen up your kitchen without making a big investment, such as updating cabinet hardware, adding crown molding, new countertops, and even changing up the lighting fixtures.

Owens said a new countertop and full height backsplash will make a huge impact on the overall look of the kitchen and can typically be completed with a modest budget.

Also, replacing the cabinet pulls or knobs, which are the jewelry of the kitchen will also help to update the look, she said. Some would like to paint over existing cabinets, but the finish would not be as strong as one applied in a factory. It gives you a different look, but not as durable.

Thomas added there are many trends in kitchen remodeling.

Right now we are seeing a lot of dark cabinets with the lighter countertops, she said. Also, the grey tones are really big right now.
