NORTH COUNTY The arrival of warmer weather can easily renew a homeowners vigor for various home improvement projects, and many have grand plans for interior and exterior renovations as they prep their living spaces for comfort, beauty and entertaining opportunities. While there are many worthy projects to pursue, adding outdoor lighting to a home can help increase its value and make the home safer and more attractive in the evening hours.
According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), with a few updates to outside lighting, families can make even better use of their homes at night. Adding outdoor lighting is easier and less expensive than many homeowners may know, allowing them to transform an existing patio, deck or pool area into an enjoyable nighttime retreat. Pool parties, dinners on the patio or barbecues with neighbors become even more memorable when outdoor lighting is added or improved. But homeowners who want to install or upgrade their outdoor lighting should consider the following tips, courtesy of ALA.
Improve navigation. Lighting is typically layered into a room or outdoor space in three ways: overhead, task and ambient. Even outdoors, where there are no typical boundaries and borders, those three layers are necessary. Outdoor overhead lighting should improve visibility on steps, paths and walking surfaces, especially where theres a bend or an intersection. Task lighting can be used around cooking orgardening areas. Ambient light will cast a comforting glow around any outdoor space.
Enhance security. To improve visibility and security, combine a motion detector with a sconce to illuminate dark corners or entryways. Be sure to aim lights away from the door to improve visibility. Lanterns on either side of the door can give a home a warm, welcoming appearance and improve the safety of entryways.
Create outdoor rooms. Advertisement [ Christ the King Lutheran Church ] Outdoor lighting at the borders of a space is a great way to create barriers, both vertically and horizontally. Lights in a tree create something akin to a chandelier hung in the middle of the sky, and even accent lights in the general area of the edge of a patio, deck or porch will shine across the space and provide enough of a comfort level for people to understand where things are.
Reduce glare. Outdoor lighting that casts a glare can be blinding, as can light thats too bright. Lighting along paths should be cast downward, with fixtures that are hooded. A variety of lighting options will create layers, allowing the homeowner to add or subtract as necessary. Exterior-safe dimmers also can provide flexible control over the level of light, as can movable fixtures added to a patio or porch.
Add decorative elements. Just as arbors, pergolas, patios and other outdoor elements help to enhance the style of an outdoor space, so, too, can lighting contribute to a well-designed landscape. Lighting should play up decorative features of a yard and add the ambience that homeowners desire. Step lights make passage safe while also highlighting molding or trim details. An outdoor chandelier can make for a wonderful accent during dinnertime on the deck or under a pergola. Patio lights provide atmosphere as well as illumination for cooking outside.
Enhance views from inside. Outdoor lighting can make the view from inside pleasant and enjoyable. Use a variety of lights, including spotlights on trees, lights dotted along pathways and accent lights on unique landscape features, to create an idyllic landscape visible from inside the home.
Outdoor lighting enhances functionality of yards and landscapes while making such areas safer for homeowners and their guests once the sun has gone down.

(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) An Omani techie has tracked down and rescued his runaway maid who was lured away by another man who offered her more money but then forced her into prostitution.
The senior IT professional spoke to Muscat Daily in detail about the incident which happened after his family along with the maid returned to their home in Mawaleh on January 8 after a New Year holiday in Malaysia.
When the maid disappeared a day later, Mahmoud (name changed) said he was 'surprised and angered'. But then, the maid's phone data usage and contacts helped him track her down in five days.
''It was concern and a sense of responsibility that motivated me. Although she betrayed our trust and love, I thought that she may have been trapped,'' said Mahmoud.
According to him, the 28 year old maid said that an Asian man in his 30s lured her with 'better pay and a better life' but forced her into prostitution. The maid said she knew him for four months during which the two remained in constant touch through texts and phone calls.
While tracking her down, Mahmoud first gathered information from other maids known to her. Using the photo of a man he found on her phone, he took help from shopkeepers, delivery boys and barbers in the area to locate him.
''Once I had collected enough information, I learnt a bit of his language and tracked him down with the help of a barber in the locality he lived.''
Mahmoud said he initially met the man posing as a customer, but then 'sensed danger and escaped'. ''The next time, I took help from another person and caught him,'' he said.
Mahmoud said the maid was repentant upon finding out the truth about the man. ''He made false promises about getting me several part-time jobs to earn more than what my sponsor paid me,'' he quoted the maid as saying.
''The man pursued me for four months and I would talk to him while shopping for groceries and essentials or while out throwing trash. He would visit me whenever the family was not at home and give me money. I liked him and was tempted by the money.''

Im far from the greed and emotion of Wall Street and able to conduct the kind of independent thinking that keeps us ahead of the pack, not chasing it. I love my job and consider it a stewardship of other peoples hard-earned money. I want to do this the rest of my life.

Jeff Auxier (Trades, Portfolio) is one of the favored gurus followed by GuruFocus. He is the president and chief executive officer at Auxier Asset Management and is in charge of the Auxier Focus Fund. The fund manager comes to the industry with 30 years of experience and in that time has mustered up quite a track record as well as insight into nearly every market bump or bubble.
Biography and Career
According Auxier Assets website,Jeff Auxier (Trades, Portfolio) got his start in finance at the early age of 11, when he had a job mowing the long-time Georgia Pacific CEO Robert Pamplins lawn. He learned quite a bit from the CEO including what he considers to be a very important factor to running a business: Mr. Pamplin always put his shareholders first and believed business should be transparent. Moving on from these early years Auxier went on to graduate from the University of Oregon with a degree in Finance and an emphasis in accounting, and from then on Auxier went on working towards making connections with financial savants such as Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio).
Jeff Auxier (Trades, Portfolio) began his professional career in 1982 at Foster Marshall-American Express, or what is now known as Smith Barney, in Portland. Because of his connections and ties to Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio) and the likes, Auxier really connected with and made sense of Value Investing, so in the late 80s he assisted his company in creating the Portfolio Management Advisory Board which created policies that were aimed at better serving client and shareholder interests.
It was in 1998 when Auxier realized what he actually wanted to do for a living. The guru left Smith Barney to start his own investment fund, Auxier Asset Management, and not long after he began the Auxier Focus Fund. Auxier says that he wanted to start a fund where the manager is held highly accountable, so he put his money where his mouth is and remains one of the Auxier Focus Funds largest shareholders. Jeff owns over 166,000 shares of this fund, the entirety of his personal retirement fund, and he promised not to sell a single share until he is no longer manager. Not only is his money tied up in the fund but his familys assets are also included in the money management portion of Auxier Asset Management, and not only that but members of the Auxier Asset Management team also maintain large percentages of their own net worth locked up in the Focus Fund.
Jeff Auxier (Trades, Portfolio) and his family live rather far away from the hustle of Wall St., maintaining a large farm on the outskirts of Portland as well as massive ranch in the high desert of Central Oregon.
