BBB issues list of dirty dozen business

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The Better Business Bureau announced on Thursdayits annual "Dirty Dozen" list of area businesses with the most unanswered complaints in 2013.

Last year, consumers filed 13,993 complaints with the BBB against businesses in the Southern Piedmont area of N.C. and S.C.

"In 2013, the BBB resolved a record-high 90 percent of complaints because the majority of businesses worked with us to address customer issues," said BBB President Tom Bartholomy. "Unfortunately though, there are businesses that don't respond to complaints at all, and those businesses are the ones that have made our Dirty Dozen list."

The top two companies with the most unanswered complaints are collection agencies that specialize in collecting payday loans taken out online.

"Payday lending is a brand new market for debt collectors," said Bartholomy, "but the debt collectors are still required to adhere to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act."

Two businesses on the BBB's 2013 Dirty Dozen list were also on the 2012 Dirty Dozen List. "One of these businesses has been on our list three times," said Bartholomy.

"When companies don't respond to complaints, they usually don't stay in business very long because consumers are doing their homework and checking businesses out," Bartholomy added. "However, some businesses, like Home Appliance Repair, repeatedly change their name and use aliases to make it difficult for consumers to find out about their complaint record."

The top 12 businesses with the most unanswered complaints from January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013 are:

1.PDL Recovery Services (BBB Grade F) - Charlotte-based PDL Recovery Services is a debt collector that specializes in collecting payday loans taken out online. PDL Recovery Services had 21 unanswered complaints in 2013 and 22 total complaints in the last 36 months. Complainants from 19 states allege that PDL collectors used harassing and threatening tactics in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act which included: 1) calling repeatedly, 2) contacting their employers to tell them that the person is going to be arrested, and 3) impersonating law enforcement personnel. Complainants also allege that PDL did not provide requested documentation to prove that the debt was valid.

In dilapidated housing complex, tenants await construction on new building

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Garbage, graffiti, and expired building permits are only the beginning of a long list of hazards bothering neighbors of the Ennis Francis II building on 123rd Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.

The 15-story building was intended to provide new homes for residents of the dilapidated Ennis Francis low-rise apartment complex. But Ennis Francis II is sitting unfinished, with no indication as to when construction will resume.

Both buildings are funded by the Abyssinian Development Corporation, a nonprofit real estate development branch of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church. The corporations financial problems, detailed in a Village Voice article from April 2013, stopped construction of Ennis Francis II in April, but an ADC spokesperson reaffirmed as recently as November that construction on the building would resume and finish on schedule.

Although the sign on the scaffolding advertises a January 2014 completion date, the site remains boarded up.

The tenants of the Ennis Francis housing were promised homes in the new building, but with construction halted, they remain situated in what they describe as nearly unlivable conditions.

Ennis Francis tenants Brenda Brown and Jessica Hughes said they have to boil water and keep their ovens on since heaters in the building are ineffective.

Sometimes we cant even open the windows because its a brick of ice, Brown said.

Brown added that she has to cover her belongings with plastic bags or pile them in the corners of the room to protect them from the rainwater that leaks into her closets. Her closet doors are broken, her apartment has mold, and shes seen cockroaches and dry rot in the bathroom.

The toilets, bath, and shower from Browns unit leak into Hughes apartment downstairs, where the mold is so bad that Hughes must keep the windows open in all temperatures because her daughter has asthma.

Hughes said that nonresidents also hang out in the building at all hours of the day and night.

Termites: Control, Inspection, Detection & Termite …

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

There are more than 40 species of termites in the U.S. Because different species require different control methods, it is very important that your pest control expert correctly identify the termites before treating an infestation.

Subterranean, drywood and dampwood termites prefer different types of wood, moisture levels and temperatures. Each species also builds nests in locations that provide the right conditions above-ground or underground. Subterranean termites build their nests in the soil, while Formosan termites (a species of subterranean termite) can build their nests in the soil or inside walls. Drywood termites and dampwood termites build their nests in the wood they consume.

    How to Tell Termites Apart

Across most species of termites, worker and nymph termites look very similar. They are small and have soft, pale-colored bodies that look like the larval stage of other insects.

Therefore, experts typically rely on termite soldiers and winged reproductives to identify species. Soldiers can be distinguished by variations in color, size and head shape. Some soldiers also have a nasutus, a long tubular snout from which they can expel a sticky, glue-like substance that helps fend off predators.

Experts can identify the species of winged alates based on variations in size, body color, wing color and wing veins.

Identify Termites By Damage to Wood

Subterranean and drywood termites leave different patterns in the wood they damage. These patterns can help experts identify the termite species that have infested a home.

Subterranean termites prefer softer springwood, which is digested more easily. Springwood can be found along the grain, which means that wood damaged by subterranean termites often looks like a honeycomb.

Drywood termites eat across and with the grain, damaging both the softer springwood and the harder summerwood. They excavate large rooms (called galleries) in the wood and connect them via tunnels.
