In recent years, home security has shifted away from simple control panels and deadbolt locks into cool, coveted high-tech gadgets that compose items on many homeowners wish lists. While the Jetson era hasnt arrived just yet, the technology behind modern smart homes would likely be enough to blow the minds of our ancestors.
But, todays security systems arent simply the product of technological developments of the past few years; the groundwork for smart security systems was laid generations ago. To understand how home security evolved into what it is today, the Electronic Security Association (ESA) takes a look back at the past.
The first home security systems
When World War I ended, an increase in crime followed. As a result, Americans became sensitive to security needs and were eager to find ways to protect themselves and their property. Additionally, many insurance companies began offering premium discounts to alarm subscribers. These events produced a consumer demand for alarm systems.
During this time, homeowners may have subscribed to a service called door shakers a group of night watchmen who would shake subscribers doors each night to ensure they were locked. More advanced users may have installed an alarm system that used electromagnetic contacts fastened to doors and windows, which were connected to a battery and bell. These systems were monitored by a central station that sent a guard to the residence when the alarm was triggered.
Fast forward to today, homeowners have traded in door shakers for automated, sophisticated systems. Now, to ensure that doors are locked and the alarm is set, users simply log in remotely via a web-enabled device and check the status of their homes. They can lock doors, arm the system, or adjust the thermostat with the touch of a button.
Video surveillance evolves
In 1949, George Orwells book 1984 was published and the notion of video surveillance became an eerie concept. While video surveillance technology was developed in the 1940s, it wasnt until the 1970s that it was used in homes as a security measure.
An early model of an advanced video home security system included a large motorized camera that moved down a track to view the exterior of the home through four peepholes mounted in the front door. The video camera transmitted grainy images of visitors to a stationary television monitor that also served as the control panel where the homeowner could remotely control the cameras movements.The panel, which was located in a separate room away from the camera, was equipped with security features such as an intercom to communicate with visitors, a door lock switch and a button that could activate the alarm at the central station that monitored the residence.

Golf course architect Larry Packard has passed has away at his home at the age of 101. Born on November 15, 1912 - before the start of World War I, he worked on over 600 golf courses and was a former president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.
Larry Packard
For over 80 years, "like what you do" was Packard's motto. Born in Northampton, Mass., he became interested in landscape architecture in the 1930s when the United States was in the grip of the Great Depression. One particular job at Westover Field Air Base in his home state involved planting grass along two runways, each two miles long. This was an enormous undertaking as it was before the days of motorized seeding equipment. Packard's keen work drew attention from the government, which sent an informant to find out how he did it with such precision.
Another of Packard's assignments as a wartime architect was to devise a camouflage scheme for the airbase to prevent enemy attack. Packard did such a good job that even some of the American fighter pilots couldn't find the runways to land. His expertise was later sought out to design an airport in Chicago, known today as O'Hare, which is now the world's fourth busiest.
Packard's work eventually led from runways to fairways. After World War II, he began his career in golf course architecture with an entry-level position in the firm of Robert Bruce Harris, where he became friends with renowned architect Robert Trent Jones. During the next 50 years, Packard designed over 350 new golf courses and redesigned another 250. His signature touch was the "double-dogleg" hole. In addition to the United States, Packard designed courses in Egypt, Japan, China, South Korea, Guatemala and Costa Rica.
By 1970, Packard was elected president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, where he made significant expansions to the membership and was instrumental in changing the face of the organization. That same year, Innisbrook Resort opened its gates, with Packard designing the first layout, the Island Course.
Packard subsequently designed the resort's other three courses: North, South and Copperhead, which annually hosts the PGA Tour's Valspar Championship. The time spent on Innisbrook's 900 acres led to Packard to make his home there.
On his 100th birthday in 2012 at the Innisbrook restaurant, which bears his name, Packard had some advice for those who asked about the secret to his longevity: "It's all about what you eat and what you put into your body," he said. "No salt; don't eat a lot of butter and fats. You also have to be happy, and make sure you like what you do every day."
"We are saddened to lose a titan of the golf industry and a cornerstone of the Innisbrook community," said Sheila C. Johnson, founder & CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts. "Larry was a truly wonderful and exceptionally accomplished person. He was, and still is, an inspiration to us all, and our thoughts are with his family at this time."
Packard leaves behind two children, Pamela Sharkey and Roger Packard, the latter of whom followed in his father's footsteps as a golf course architect.
Just how poor of condition are San Diego's parks in? Poor enough for the City of San Diego to be named in two unrelated lawsuits in the span of one month, both over improper maintenance and shoddy sod conditions.
The most recent legal complaint was filed on September 4 by attorneys representing San Diego Unified School District.
The district was filed on behalf of LaToya Smedley, a noon duty assistant at Porter Elementary School in Lincoln Park. Smedley injured herself while walking on a wet and ruddy field.
The park, according to the complaint was "negligently, carelessly, and recklessly owned, entrusted, maintained, repaired, used and controlled said grass field and property that they caused and allowed it to be in a dangerous and defective condition, thereby causing employee to be injured when her feet suddenly and unexpectedly sunk into wet and muddy grass, causing her feet to stick in the mud and her body to twist on defendants' premises."
The City "should have known of the dangerous and defective condition of their property and should have foreseen the danger to members of the public including the employee."
A similar lawsuit over poorly maintained park space was filed on August 27. In that complaint, a man injured his leg after stepping into a gopher hole at Robb Field in Ocean Beach. Gopher infestation at the field, according to the lawsuit and media accounts, has been a hot topic for residents and park goers.
In the most recent case, attorneys for San Diego Unified are asking the City to cover all workers compensation claims as well as any additional damages.
