A photographer, interior designer and videographer sit in a room, discussing business, downtown Lees Summit and a myriad of other topics.
While their personalities are as diverse as their business plans, each brings an art, craft and plethora of ideas to the space now known as The 318, located at 318 SE Douglas St.
The 318 concept started more than a year ago. And in those 12 months, Kim Berwald-Viar, Kelly Lankford and Cathryn Farley have transitioned their in-home businesses to an artsy storefront near the heart of downtown Lees Summit.
And while one would think the interior designer of the group in this case, Lankford would have free reign over the office plan, all three say transitioning the former cupcake bakery into an incubator space for three businesses was truly a group effort.
It took us a year to find the right spot, said Berwald-Viar, owner of Celebrating Personal Treasures, a company that specializes in videos, gifts, books and websites for occasions such as graduations, retirements, new arrivals and baptisms. She also offers a unique service she calls life story writing" for those that want to share their history with family and friends.
Ive had some involvement with downtown Lees Summit prior to this and really enjoyed the events down here.
Lankford said the "womens business co-op" started when all three met through the networking group BNI.
From the start, its been about downtown, said Lankford, owner of KHL Design Studio. Initially, we were looking upstairs, but then we started looking at retail locations.

Blacksumac, a developer of remote presence-based smart technology, has announced the US and Canada launch of Piper, a home security and automation device. It allows users to monitor and interact with their home via a smartphone or tablet.
Last year Piper raised over three times its targeted amount via an Indiegogo campaign. The device incorporates a wide-angle camera, motion detector, speaker, microphone, siren, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave controller and sensors for humidity, temperature, sound and ambient light. It can be mounted on a wall or simply placed on flat surface, and an accompanying app allows users to interact with, and control, it. Up to five Pipers can be managed with the app.
First and foremost, Piper provides a video feed that users can remote monitor the home via the app. A 180 fish-eye lens aims to provide a full-view of a room in one shot, and users can also pan and zoom as required. Live video can be accessed using the app, and videos of triggered recordings are saved to Piper's servers in the cloud. The device also monitors temperature, humidity, ambient light and sound levels, as well as providing two-way audio.
Perhaps the device's most useful functionality is its home automation feature. It can be programmed to perform actions or send notifications when it senses certain things. For example, if movement is detected, a message can be sent to the user, who can then launch the app and check on their home via the video feed. The device's Z-Wave capability means it can communicate with other Z-Wave devices, allowing users to control things like lighting or heating.
Gizmag spoke to Blacksumac about the inspiration and creation process for Piper. The idea for the device came from CEO and co-founder Russell Ure, who wanted to ensure that his daughters would return home safely to their apartments at night, but felt that there wasn't anything suitable for apartment renters.
To go about creating Piper, the team started with lots of ideas and concepts, before narrowing them down and refining the vision. "All the time we kept asking ourselves, who do we each know who had little interest in technology, and how would they find our technology useful?" said a company spokesperson. "Busy people who had little interest figuring out technology were our benchmark for usability."
In order to test the simplicity of the device, two focus groups that exemplified this mindset were put together and every feature measured against whether or not the groups would be happy with it.
Piper's portability and adaptability have spawned a variety of applications. So far, Blacksumac has been asked about taking the device traveling, using it to monitor sick or infirm elderly parents, and using it in a greenhouse environment. Customers have included farmers, veterinary clinics and dentists.
Blacksumac believes that the future of the smart home will be guided by technology that anticipates what we need and is controlled naturally. "The smart, connected home is becoming more and more accessible to consumers than ever before," the company rep explained. "We're going to see more demand from consumers to have the ability to interact with their homes in a simple and seamless way."
Piper, which was named a Design and Engineering Awards Honoree at CES 2014, is available now in the US, retailing from US$239. It will be launching in the EU later this year.

As we work our way into 2014, it never hurts to look back and reflect on the year that's passed.

Chuck Nutter of Nutter Hardware and Handyman Services won Business of the Year. Upon reading the nomination forms, it's not hard to see why.
Two main reasons emerged: During the extended power outage two years ago, Nutter Hardware remained open for business, operating with cash sales, handwritten notes and loaning out items. Likewise, Nutter Handyman Services assisted with volunteer labor during the construction of the Barrington Welcome Playground.
Chuck Nutter practices what he preaches -- customer service and doing the right thing.
This year's Community Enrichment award went to the Barrington Welcome Playground executive committee and the Leadership UA Class of 2013.

Tulsa-based Unit Corp. is in a legal battle with an American Indian tribe in Washington state that has claimed sovereignty over an oil and gas lease in Beaver County.
The Kikiallus Nation in January presented Unit with documents from its tribal court threatening to invalidate the company's lease and transfer Unit's right as operator to tribal affiliate TMI Ministries, according to documents filed with the Western District Court of Oklahoma.
Unit has denied the tribe's claims and asked the district court to intervene.
Our arguments are several, Unit General Counsel Mark Schell told The Oklahoman. The lease never expired. We continue to own it. We have no idea how they claim to own it. We don't know who they are. It is not a recognized tribe. It is not a recognized tribal court. It has no jurisdiction over anything in Oklahoma.
Phone calls and emails to the Kikiallus Nation and TMI Ministries were not returned.
The Kikiallus Nation is listed with the Washington State Office of Indian Affairs as a non-federally recognized Indian tribe. Kikiallus is affiliated with the Stillaguamish and Swinomish tribes, which are both federally recognized.
TMI Ministries is listed as a nondenominational religious organization based in Olympia, Wash. Kurt Weinreich is listed as executive director. The organization has the same phone number as Kurt's Amazing Roof and Gutter Cleaning, which has a different Olympia address.

Unit Corp. sues over oil lease in Oklahoma
A crew cleaning up a gasoline spill that occurred last November is now into a new phase of the project.
Last week the crew began removing asphalt and concrete curbing on the west side of Saguaro Boulevard between Trevino Drive and a point north of Rough Court.
Town Engineering Inspector Justin Weldy said they are removing 24 to 30 inches of soil that was under the asphalt and testing it for contamination.
In some areas where they find heavier concentrations they will dig deeper.
The gasoline spilled from a ruptured tanker truck in the drive between Circle K and McDonalds on Nov. 17, 2013. About 2,300 gallons of fuel spilled and ran along the gutter to a drainage culvert north of Monterey Drive.
The culvert and a wash on the other side of Saguaro have been restored.
The asphalt absorbed enough gasoline that when the crew attempted to use a milling machine to remove it the equipment ignited a couple of small explosions, according to Weldy.
Depending on the contamination level the work may last up to another six to eight weeks.
The soil will need to be replaced along with the curbing and asphalt.
