NEWARK, N.J. Since entering the National Football League in April, former Steelton and Penn State standout Jordan Hill has adapted to life as a rookie. Long gone are the days of trekking through a snow-covered Happy Valley en route to classes or the football building. That part of his daily routine has since been replaced with a new landscape to observe in Seattle, coupled with meetings, film study and more meetings.
The Seattle Seahawks selected Hill in the third round of the NFL Draft and due to injuries and a stout group of defensive linemen ahead of him, this season has been as much of a learning experience as any. In Seattles final preseason game the young defensive tackle sustained a partially torn left biceps tendon that resulted in him missing six games. After that it was an injured right arm that set him back yet again.
Thats been the hardest thing, Hill said during Tuesdays Super Bowl Media Day. Just working through the injuries because Ive never really gone through anything like that, especially upper body. I havent had any problems like that and just trying to wrap my head around it that Ill be back.
Watching from the sidelines it was hard at first to swallow, but I understand that Ive got to get healthy.
Hill wasnt active for the teams NFC Championship Game against San Francisco and the result of his rookie season thus far is seven tackles and 1.5 sacks. But through it all the 6-foot-1, 303-pound lineman continues to learn and better understand what it means to be in the league and just how difficult it is for a team to have a shot at winning the Super Bowl.
The thought of having a chance to win a ring after being in the league for nearly 10 months is something Hill cant help but crack a smile when asked about. The Super Bowl experience thus far has been more than he said he ever imagined.
Its been crazy, he said. Just the type of support weve had just from New York and New Jersey people cheering for us and coming up and just wanting to know who we are and what were about and what team we play for. I think theyre more excited just to be representing the Super Bowl.
When we left Seattle there were at least like thousands of fans lined up on the streets and the highway just going to the airport. It was crazy.
Sunday evening at MetLife Stadium Hills parents and two sisters will all have a chance to see him and the Seattle Seahawks compete against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. Living across the country from most of his family and friends forced Hill to forge a new identity for himself, one where he continues to focus on the game thats gotten him thus far while acclimating to a new city hes learned to love. Add in new teammates who like to joke with the easygoing Hill and charge him with a meal every now and then and the 22-year-old is as content as ever.

He's now a sought-after interior designer and a judge on The Block, but Darren Palmer jokes that he can hardly credit his childhood in 1980s country Queensland with his taste.
He's now a sought-after interior designer and a judge on The Block, but Darren Palmer jokes that he can hardly credit his childhood in 1980s country Queensland with his taste.
What do you reckon? My mum and dad had an apricot leather lounge suite, he says, laughing.
Maybe this is where it all started. Maybe I sort of saw that and went 'urgh, there's got to be better than this'.
Palmer grew up in Gladstone, about six hours north of Brisbane, and at 17 hightailed it to Rockhampton to study fine art and design. Straight after university he moved to Brisbane to start work in graphic design and advertising.
Chasing the big city lights, he took his talents to Sydney, eventually starting his own graphic design firm.
I did some decent work and it was all OK but I'm about 10 times better an interior designer than I was a graphic designer, says Palmer, 36.
It was while renovating a one-bedroom apartment at age 27 spending every spare minute of his weekends on the project that Palmer's flair attracted the attention of an interior designer friend who offered to show him the ropes.
When Belle magazine published photos of his renovated apartment, Palmer's star began to shine.

PASCO, WA - Faulty wiring in a light fixture is to blame for a fire that left six people without a home Tuesday morning, in Pasco.
The fire started around 5:00 a.m. in the attic of the home, on the 900 block of South Lindsay Avenue.
Firefighters had to rip open the ceiling in the living room to get to the flames. It took them about a half hour to put out the fire.
The family was inside at the time, but was able to get out safely.
"Crews had to go in and gain access to the attic. It was lath and plaster construction-- so, they had a difficult time getting in--but once they got in there, we got the fire under control real quickly," said Battalion Chief Dave Hare of the Pasco Fire Department.
Firefighters said the family was able to salvage most of their belongings. The Red Cross is helping them with what they need.

Home Warranties
Q. What do you think about home warranty for rentals? Best regards. Azhar, San Diego, Calif.
A. Im glad to see that you are a rental property owner now! Ive been hearing more and more investors that use home warranties, which is quite a turnaround from a few years ago. Ill note how these work and a few issues to consider.
A home warranty costs about $350-$500 per year. Many sellers provide a home warranty to a buyer at the sale in hopes that gives the seller a little extra protection in case an appliance or other item breaks. And some home warranty companies do a decent job servicing their policies, but some dont do a good job. Home warranty companies, unfortunately, are some of the most complained about service providers for unsatisfactory service, but many have good experiences too. You just have to find the good ones!
The main issue to understand is that a home warranty doesnt cover everything that could go wrong. Like any insurance policy, there are exclusions for some issues, plus there are items like pools or air conditioners that cost extra. Most policy buyers dont read the policy and just assume, incorrectly, that everything is covered.
So if you are going to buy a policy, make sure you understand what is covered and what is not covered. Due to the relatively low cost, I dont see any issues with buying a policy for a year and seeing what you experience if you need to make a service call and how good a job the company does on that call. Make sure to fill me in on your experience next year.
1031 Exchange
Q. We are doing a 1031 exchange and will soon be selling property for about $2,100,000. We want to buy some rentals and thought about Texas, but taxes are insane. So we are considering California. My question to you is do you think buying four to five ready-to-go rental properties is a good idea and where do you think we should be looking, since with the 1031 exchange we have limited time to identify properties. Josh B., North of Los Angeles
A. Make sure to get good legal, accounting and 1031 exchange advice months before you close escrow on what you are selling. Identifying a property within 45 days that you can actually get under contract and buy is very tough. If you are trying to buy five properties, thats even tougher. You need the buyer of your property to work with you and agree to close escrow once you have all the replacement properties under contract and moving close to closing escrow. Otherwise, good luck completing the exchange.
Regarding buying rental properties, rentals are hard work. If you folks are older, you may not want to deal with rentals. Having a management company might help some, but might not help that much. So make sure you want to be landlords. Also, you should buy properties near where you live. If you have to travel long distances to service the property even if you have a management company this can be very disrupting to your life and you might find that the properties are more of a pain than they are worth.
