Winter storm could cut power 3-5 days for some, Entergy says

Local utilities are preparing for power outages across south Louisiana that could result from an icy storm expected to hit today through Thursday morning.

The impact of ice storms is very difficult to predict, but forecasts indicate the approaching weather system could be one of the most challenging the region has seen in years," said Dennis Dawsey, vice president of customer service for Entergy's Louisiana utilities, which serve much of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes.

"Power outage restoration may extend into 3 to 5 days for some customers, depending on the severity of the damage," he said. "Ice storms can pose a significant threat to an electric system, and extreme cold weather can present additional challenges and require a different and often slower restoration process."

The utility company is assembling more than 2,100 restoration workers in anticipation of ice-related outages, Dawsey said.

SLECA, a utility that serves about 16,000 in Terrebone, Lafourche and surrounding parishes, has all of its crews on standby, General Manager Joe Ticheli said this morning.

"When you have an ice storm like this, obviously some things you prepare for in advance, you fuel up all of your trucks and make sure your chainsaws are operable," he said. "Well be here all day and night answering telephones in case there are outages."

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for southeastern Louisiana through Wednesday morning. Forecasters said the winter storm could bring up to 3-5 inches of snow accumulation and 1/8 to 3/8 inches of ice or more to areas where a mix of precipitation persists.

"As with any storm, safety is always our first priority, and we want it to be yours too," Dawes said. "We urge customers to monitor the weather and prepare to implement their own winter storm plans.

Customers are encouraged to download Entergy's mobile app to access outage maps and information.

Angie’s List: Wallpaper & Wallpaper Removal

    - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

But it's nothing like what you remember seeing in your grandma's kitchen.

It can be a nightmare to remove and even more difficult to apply. That's why many homeowners turn to an expert when dealing with wallpaper.

Contractor Jim Stevens is hanging new wallpaper in a client's home. He had to remove the old paper and prep the walls.

"Well she stripped some of the outer coating on the bare drywall which is a problem. The wallpaper was hung over a bare drywall and that's something you never want to do. Even sizing won't keep that wallpaper from tearing that paper off the drywall when you go to strip it," contractor Jim Stevens said.

Susan Colvin, an interior designer, said if you are looking for an alternative to paint, wallpaper can bring color and texture to any room.

And some of today's wallpaper is also easier to remove.

"You can get pattern, multiple colors, and so there's a lot of style in wallpaper and you can express some individuality that you're not necessarily doing just with paint," interior designer Susan Colvin said.

"Wallpaper is making a comeback, but it's not the same wallpaper we have thought of over the years. There is some really neat trends, but one thing hasn't changed and that's wallpaper is a commitment. Putting it up and taking it down can be tricky," Angie Hicks of Angies List said.

"If you don't like tedious stuff, you want to stay out of the stripping business. Hanging wallpaper is a tedious process too. A lot of times you get what you pay for. A professional will put it up right and take it off right too," wallpaper contractor Jim Stevens said.

The most common wallpaper types are vinyl and fabric.

Angie’s List Report: Wallpaper Makes a Comeback

    Wallpaper is Back in Style

After fading from popularity decades ago, wallpaper is making a comeback. But it's nothing like what you remember seeing in your grandma's kitchen. In this week's Angie's List report, Nancy Naeveshows how wallpaper can change the look and feel of a room.

It can be a nightmare to remove and even more difficult to apply. That's why many homeowners turn to an expert when dealing with wallpaper. Contractor Jim Stevens is hanging new wallpaper in a client's home he had to remove the old paper and prep the walls.

"Well she stripped some of the outer coating on the bare drywall which is a problem. The wallpaper was hung over a bare drywall and that's something you never want to do. "You can get pattern, multiple colors, and so there's a lot of style in wallpaper and you can express some individuality that you're not necessarily doing just with paint," Interior Designer Susan Colvin said.

"If you don't like tedious stuff, you want to stay out of the stripping business. Hanging wallpaper is a tedious process too. A lot of times you get what you pay for. A professional will put it up right and take it off right too," Stevens said.

The most common wallpaper types are vinyl and fabric.

"A lot of wallpaper is made with vinyl coatings, to make it easier to clean. Not all wallpapers are that way, but a lot of wallpaper you can actually wash down fairly well. So there are a little easier to maintain than perhaps some paint," Colvin said.

Plum officials still seeking spot for bus garage

    - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Plum School Board members are looking to widen the search for a new bus garage.

The decision follows a report by Pennsylvania Soil and Rock Inc. in Monroeville that building a new garage on borough property on Renton Road would cost $2.8 million about $1.8 million for site work, utilities, storm-water management, paving, curbing and sidewalks, erosion and sediment controls and landscaping, lighting and retaining walls and $1 million for the building.

We would spend $1.8 million for earth moving and permitting (and other work) to build a $1 million building, Plum School District Superintendent Timothy Glasspool said during last week's transportation committee meeting.

The borough owns 110 acres at the site at which a new public works operation opened in October.

Plans also call for a combination building to house a new ambulance base for Plum Emergency Medical Services and a new station for the Renton Volunteer Fire Co.

Board President Sal Colella in November proposed exploring the possibility of building a new garage at the Renton Road site because the district's current bus garage on two acres off Leechburg Road that is more than 40 years old is in disrepair and needs work including driveway and parking lot paving, new lights and cameras, roof restoration and upgrades to the restroom, doors and vestibules, roof restoration and upgrading the restrooms, doors and vestibule.

The area also is cramped and has little space, board member Tom McGough said.

Colella said he envisions a 65,000-square-foot building to house the district's bus fleet that has 59 vehicles, according to the district website.

Colella estimates the building would cost about $1 million.
