Hundreds of British families run for cover as 100mph winds sweep Tenerife

Shocked Midland holidaymakers were trapped in their rooms when a sunshine island hotel was ravaged by a freak 100mph storm.

They were among hundreds of British families who had to take cover when unprecedented gales hit the Hotel Los Gigantes in Tenerife.

The winds tore metal cladding from the top of the 225-bedroomed four-star hotel, ripped through the entrance, smashing doors and windows, devastated the dining room and shattered glass in the reception area.

Problems began in the early hours of Friday morning when guests were awakened by howling winds tearing through corridors, damaging patios and doors.

At the height of the storm, which lasted several hours, some terrified guests vacated their rooms and spent the night under blankets in the hotel lounge.

The hotel, which was fully booked, is a firm favourite with British couples, and had recently undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment.

Many of the guests had travelled to the resort in the south-west corner of Tenerife with Thomson and First Choice holidays.

Dear Mrs. Homeowner: Obviously, my first recommendation is the same I offer in a variety of circumstances and that is to ask friends and colleagues for referrals. Just be certain your peeps know at least some of the specifics you require, as their standards may be different from yours.

Cleaning services have been seeing a record increase in business, whether theyre self-employed housekeepers to nationally-franchised chains. Check out the Association of Residential Cleaning Services Internationals (ARCSI) list of requirements, such as liability insurance and satisfaction guarantees. The website (arcsi.org) also includes a list of interview questions, including but not limited to: Are you insured (ask for a copy of their insurance certificate)? Do you carry Workmans Comp? Do you provide criminal background checks on all employees? Is a trained crew leader in my home supervising at all times and does this person speak English?

1. Many services whirl through several houses in a single day. Unfortunately, this can lead to inattention to detail or, simply, just bad cleaning. All companies should promise and provide a detailed checklist. This should include, for example, wiping down every bathroom surface, scrubbing the tub and toilet, as well as cleaning the counters and mopping the floors with appropriate cleaners. Since housecleaning can be a transient business with a huge annual turnover, always ask for employees whove been with the company for at least six months. (Along this same line, when interviewing services upfront, ask for five references from customers whove used them for at least six months.)

2. Dont assume every worker knows how to clean. Before you sign on the dotted line, ask about the training the company provides. At the very minimum, ARCP says the company should offer at least three days of intensive training to new hires, covering such basics as using the latest equipment or the correct protocol for cleaning wood, marble, tile, etc. floors. Once you e decided upon a service, be sure and go over exactly what you require that may be somewhat different than the norm. For example, I tend to be very finicky about how I spend my money: if the baseboards arent dusted regularly, I am not a happy camper. So if you require certain chores that may not be on the maids list, speak up beforehand. (Most services do have monthly and bimonthly lists that they and you check off on completion. Whether you like what theyve done may be another story, however.)

3. Be prepared to pay a hefty sum for the first clean. While certain factors impact cost, such as location, home size, special requirements, and so forth, the average cost for a twice monthly clean averages between $75-$125. However, that first time can cost you dearly, particularly if youve never used a service before and this agency insists upon a deep clean. While you may want your heavy furniture moved each time to dust and vacuum behind the pieces, it probably wont happen and still maintain reasonable prices. For the deep clean, though, this may be a prerequisite and, along with a few more extras, can jack up the price two or three-fold! Be prepared.

Just a month after celebrating the completion and grand opening of Vyne House Phase I at Talis Park, developer Kitson & Partners announced it is moving forward with the construction of Vyne House Phase II at the private golf course community in North Naples.

Plans for the 26,500-square-foot under air, multilevel Phase II project are being finalized and site work is expected to begin no later than third quarter 2014. Vertical construction is scheduled to begin fourth quarter 2014. Kitson anticipates holding a soft opening of Phase II in December 2015 and a grand opening in January 2016.

Located adjacent to the Great Lawn at Talis Parks Grand Piazza, Vyne House epitomizes the New Fashioned aesthetic Kitson has introduced at the North Naples community. Vyne House consists of a series of lifestyle oriented spaces designed to be used every day, inviting users to come as they are in a relaxed, comfortable format. The buildings are interconnected by covered outdoor walkways and wrapped around multiple courtyards that offer the possibility of outdoor dining and entertaining. When Phase II is completed, Vyne House will include a total of 31,500 square feet under air and 20,000 square feet of outdoor space.

Company CEO Paul Brown said the expansion will include new partners, Ron and Carol Davis, and a new business name: Living Water LandscapeServices.

The company is taking over 3,600 square feet of space inside a renovated north Spokane commercialbuilding.

The business provides pruning, mowing, landscaping, sprinkler maintenance and installing for residential and commercialcustomers.

If you are a retiree who owns a home, at some point the idea of making a move may cross your mind. Perhaps the children are grown and on their own, and the size of the home no longer fits your needs. Perhaps mowing the lawn is no longer a pleasure, the home takes too much effort to keep up, and simple tasks like cleaning out gutters or even changing ceiling light bulbs aren't as easy as they used to be.

Or, you may be concerned about your current health or mobility status, or you might be worried about the future.

Potential injuries become a real concern as one ages. According to "A Profile of Housing and Health Among Older Americans," a Research Institute for Housing America report, 36 percent of older individuals have fallen in the past two years, and one-third of these have been seriously injured in a fall.

If a house is difficult to navigate, the likelihood of falls occurring rises steeply.

Couples' decisions to move are often driven by the frailest member, according to the RIHA report.

Children may become concerned about the welfare of their parents as they age, and rightly so. If parents lose their ability to perform self-care activities, they tend to move closer to their children, as well as those who are widowed, according to a Research on Aging article, "Moving Considerations: A Longitudinal Analysis of Parent-Child Residential Proximity for Older Americans."

There can be financial reasons for making a move as well.

Scaling down to a smaller, less-costly alternative just may be prudent.

Most Americans 65 or older (66 percent) who plan to move will move to a smaller house, according to the Demand Institute's May 2012 study, "The Shifting Nature of U.S. Housing Demand."

Twenty-six percent plan to move to a home of the same size, and only 8 percent plan to move to a larger house.

PITTSFIELD John Weinhold, 62, of Pittsfield, passed away at home early Thursday morning, Jan. 23, 2014, following a brief illness.

John was born March 20, 1951, in Hampton, a son of Charles A. and Elizabeth (Johnson) Weinhold. He graduated from Winnacunnet High School and attended Plymouth State College.

John began his career as an electrician with Rockingham Electric. Later he became a manager with Ralph Pill, where he stayed for more than 25 years before moving into sales with Consolidated Electrical Distributors. It was at CED where he spent the last three years.

John loved to be outdoors and reveled in time spent mowing the lawn, caring for his home and tending to his vast vegetable gardens. Described as a kind, gentle, compassionate man, John found the greatest joy in time with family; from large gatherings to simple one-on-one chats, he cherished time spent with his loved ones.

John is survived by the love of his life, best friend and wife of 30 years, Pam Weinhold; brothers Bill, Chuck, Bob and Peter Weinhold; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

SERVICES: The family will receive visitors from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Phaneuf Funeral Home & Crematorium, 243 Hanover St., Manchester. A memorial service will follow immediately in the funeral home chapel. The calendar and the temperatures may indicate were smack in the middle of winter, but its never to early to dream about upcoming spring home and garden projects.

On Feb. 8-9, Conroe-area residents will be able to feed those visions at the inaugural Lake Conroe Home and Garden Show at the Lone Star Convention Center in Conroe.

The show is being produced by Robyn and Jeff Cade, owners of RJC Productions which produces home shows in other areas of Houston including the Katy Home and Garden Show taking place this weekend.

They plan to take over the 56,000 square-foot Lone Star Convention Center and dedicate the entire space to home improvement, decorating and interior design and gardening.

The show promises more than 200 displays in home decorating, remodeling, landscaping, home decor and outdoor and garden products. There will also be how to seminars, expert consultations and product demonstrations.

Leslie Sarmiento, principal designer with Decorating Den Interiors, will be featured at the show in Booth No. 803.

Sarmiento doesnt have a store front for her design business so she said she always likes to take advantage of opportunities like to this local home show to have her own show room, even for a limited time, so visitors can see what she has to offer.

Although shes based in the Conroe area, her services are not limited to Conroe.

Sarmiento works with her clients by traveling to their home and giving a free consultation on the first visit. Then she can assist with everything from window treatments to furniture to accessories and wallpaper and lighting.
