Jim Dulley: Adding a solar sunroom

    - January 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dear Jim: I want to add a solar sunroom for inexpensive extra living space and so it will help heat our house. I would like to build a kit myself or to make one from scratch. What things should I consider?

    Mike F.

Answer: A sunroom can provide wonderful living space for your family.

Although it is typically less expensive per square foot to have a sunroom built as compared to a typical room addition, it still is not inexpensive.

Many companies sell sunrooms that are in kit form, but most want to also do the construction. This is not only to make more profit, but building one is typically not as simple as it looks. Most of these sunrooms use extruded aluminum frame members.

I persuaded a sunroom company, which always does the installation, to send the components to me since I am an experienced do-it-yourselfer. It took me three weeks of hard work to build it. They told me it typically takes two of their factory-trained workers only three days to build one.

In order to use the sunroom to capture enough solar heat to help warm your house, it should face south or southwest. It should be open to the house or have fans to move the solar-heated air into the house. Adequate solar mass, from bricks, stone, water barrels, etc. is needed to store the solar heat.

A sunroom that is designed and oriented properly to capture solar heat will typically overheat in the summer. Since you plan to use it for additional living space, it will need summertime ventilation and movable shading.

Building a sunroom yourself from scratch is the best way to keep costs down and capture the most solar heat. Depending upon your orientation to the sun, trees, lot size, etc., you will have the design flexibility to build a non-rectangular sunroom to accomplish your goals of heat and space.

For most do-it-yourselfers, using 2-by-4 lumber framing is the easiest and least expensive. Draw up a basic design you desire. Visit local window contractors and home center stores to see what size windows they have.

Katy Home and Garden Show set for this weekend

    - January 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

For those eager to get a head start on any home and garden expansion no matter the size, make plans to visit more than 250 exhibits featured at the Eighth Annual Katy Home and Garden Show to be held this weekend at the Merrell Center and Robinson Pavilion in Katy. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Consumer interest and spending in home remodeling and DIY projects continue to rise for many reasons, said Robyn Cade, President of RJC Productions and organizer of the Katy Home and Garden Show. Baby boomers may now find themselves as empty nesters with disposal incomes to refurbish, redecorate and reinvest in their homes, creating beautiful living spaces which reflect their individual personalities and an emphasis on entertaining at home.

Additionally, low interest rates make remodeling affordable. Some of the other reasons to consider remodeling a home include modernizing it.

Research shows that investing in your home pays for itself

in the long haul, particularly with kitchen and bathroom remodels, said Cade.

In fact, an American Housing Survey found that adding a half-bath can increase home value 10.5 percent and a full bath contributes 20 percent to home value. Lower heating and cooling bills by replacing outdated windows and doors with energy efficient ones.

Were especially excited about the range of exhibitors, demonstrations and experts wholl be part of this years show, said Cade.

Fall in love with your home all over again. Get inspired to kick start or finalize renovation plans with the help of design and renovation experts and two buildings of one-stop shopping including: decorating, gardening, remodeling, window treatments, home theater, landscaping, kitchens & baths, do-it-yourself, flooring, windows & doors, siding, heating/cooling, pools, outdoor entertainment and a myriad of other home related products and services. Whether planning a major renovation or smaller home updates, youll be right at home at the Katy Home & Garden Show with the ability to comparison shop in one convenient area. Find out how to make green improvements which can reduce electrical and heating bills or creative ideas to improve your homes curb appeal.

For those interested in a new garden, landscaping tips or other home improvement how-tos the Katy Home and Garden Show is brimming with ideas; experts and workshops. Foodies can get in on the fun with more than 20 food sampling booths.

On Saturday, attendees will meet celebrity DIY TV Host, Jason Cameron, who helps bring life to dreary landscapes and or specialized man caves.

Youngstown State University would receive nearly $11 million for maintenance and upgrade projects in the state budget if recommendations by the Ohio Higher Eduction Funding Commission are approved by state legislators.

Its an increase from the $9.4 million YSU received in the capital budget two years ago. The Ohio Education Funding Commission released its recommendations Thursday. Gov. John Kasich asked the states higher-education leaders to collaboratively agree on a list of capital projects. This marks the second round of that process.

No one got absolutely everything they asked for, and thats not necessarily all that unusual , said Ron Cole, a YSU spokesman. Were pleased, and were satisfied with what is being included in the proposal, and were thankful to the governor for including the projects that are in the proposal.

Ohio State University got the most of all of the states colleges and universities with more than $79 million.

Renovations to Bliss Hall and concrete replacement were on the initial list of YSUs requests and were not recommended for funding.

The commission recommended that investment be focused on maintenance and repair, reducing operating expenses, modernizing classrooms, enhancing technology, expansion and completion.
