Sprinkler puts out fire at apartments that burned in 2007

    - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Six years after a blaze destroyed a Madison apartment building, officials say the sprinkler system at a new building on the same site prevented serious damage from a weekend fire.

The fire started Saturday at the Glacier Hills Apartments near Elver Park on Madisons Southwest Side when a discarded cigarette ignited a Christmas tree on a balcony, authorities said.

By the time firefighters arrived, however, an automatic sprinkler had already extinguished the fire, leaving the building with only cosmetic damage, officials said.

Thats a far cry from July of 2007, when a fire started by a cigarette butt caused $3.5 million in damage, according to State Journal archives.

Although no residents were hurt in the fire, it left the building uninhabitable and forced dozens of people from their homes. A firefighter suffered minor injuries as well.

The building did not have a sprinkler system in 2007, but the Madison Fire Department pointed out it was re-built after the fire to include one.

This is a perfect example of how fire sprinkler systems limit damage and most importantly, save lives, Madison Fire Department spokeswoman Bernadette Galvez said in a statement.

Sprinkler System Displaces Residents In Sussex County

    - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SEAFORD, Del.-Several residents of Hampton Circle in Seaford say they'll be out on the streets Thursday morning after the sprinkler system drenched their building Tuesday night.

The Seaford fire department tells WBOC the fire alarm in the Hampton Circle apartment building went off and triggered the sprinkler system, sending water everywhere and residents outside.

The company that own Hampton Circle has arranged for residents to stay at the Days Inn in Seaford through Thursday morning but residents without renters insurance say they're not sure where they'll stay after that.

"After tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock we're gonna be on our own ya know, we're gonna have to find our own place to live," Annette Holden said.

Stanley Towers is one of the luckier residents. "My wife and I have insurance and we're blessed and we'll be staying here for the next week or so until we can get back in the building or until however long it takes."

But for others like Cindy Marsch, they say the two days at the Days Inn is not enough to figure out their next step. Marsch previously had renters insurance but gave up the policy when it got too expensive.

"I did until the end of last month," Marsch said. "Holidays and new prices and everybody going up on everything, I had to let it go."

WBOC reached out to the Hampton Circle apartment office but they say they cannot comment at this time.

Sprinklers prevent repeat of major fire at apartment complex

A Madison apartment complex avoided another major fire Saturday thanks to the sprinkler system that was installed when the apartments were rebuilt after a 2007 fire, officials said.

Crews were dispatched Friday to the Glacier Hills Apartment complex at 1218 McKenna Blvd. for a fire, according to a release.

When they arrived, crews found a small fire on a second-story balcony that was extinguished by a sprinkler head, officials said. The fire caused cosmetic damage to the exterior of the building, but no one was injured.

The fire was the result of improperly discarded smoking materials that started a Christmas tree on the balcony on fire, according to the release.

The installation of the sprinkler system helped the complex avoid a repeat of the July 2007 fire that caused $3.5 million in damage, officials said. The building was a total loss, all of the residents were displaced and one firefighter was injured in the first fire.

‘Beds in sheds’ clampdown finds family of six living in tiny outhouse

    - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Landlord Virendra Patel, 58, built the structure four years ago in a London suburb without getting planning permission from Brent council.

He concealed it from planning officers and leased it to the family of six, who lived without paying council tax in five tiny rooms crammed into the 48 metre-square outbuilding in Kingsbury, north west London.

But in one of the first cases of its kind, Mr Patel is being forced to demolish the structure and pay thousands in legal costs after he was taken to court by the local authority.

Buildings more than four years old cannot usually be the subject of a planning order but a change in the law allowed Brent to force the landlord to demolish the structure because he had concealed it.

Suburban: Valley Drive, Kingsbury, where the outhouse was found

Mr Patel originally claimed the outhouse would be used as a gym, before allowing the tenants to move in with a clause exempting them from paying council tax. He claimed that it was a coincidence that people had moved in, and that he had not realised they were living council-tax free.

But a judge at Hendon Magistrates Court ruled last week that there had been a deliberate concealment of the buildings use, and ordered Mr Patel to pay 11,703 costs and demolish the outhouse.

George Crane, who is Brent council's lead member for regeneration, said: This is a fantastic result for the council and unscrupulous landlords who flout planning laws should take note.

Brent Council wants good homes for local people and we are doing everything we can to raise standards. Beds in sheds simply aren't good enough and we will stamp them out.
