    Documentary Focuses on Sexual/Human Trafficking

    - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LAS VEGAS --(Every major television station in Nevada, including channel 8, will air a special 30-minute documentary tonightthat sheds light on sex trafficking in this state. It's called "trafficked No More" and depicts a growing crisis that's claiming victims. The documentary will also be streamed on 8NewsNOW.com. It starts at 7:30 p.m.)

Mary Ann Swigartgot lured into sex traffickingwhen she was 18 years old. While the victims of sex trafficking don't always want to talk about their experiences, she felt it was important to share her experience.

ForSwigart, her heavilytattooedface literally tells her story.

"You look in the mirror and see big bold letters of what the situation was," she said.

The tattoos cover the left side ofher face. There's even a faint outlineon her forehead with the name of her former pimp.

"I can't explain into details what I went through, but it wasn't anything nice,"Swigart said.

Shewas lured into the business in her teens by a man who promised her a career as a tattoo model and lots of money. Instead, she was forced to work on a porn site and as a prostitute.

"It's a very prevalent and it's a huge problem," said Heather Frost, WestCare Nevada.

Frostsays she's seen countless women and girls. Some girls are as young as 7 when they come into her facility as victims of human and sex trafficking.

"A lot of times, families even in affluent neighborhoods, in the country and here in Vegas, will sell their children into human trafficking," Frost said.

Beer boasts best of the tasting trail

    - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By CAITLIN HEATHCOTEJan. 22, 2014, 10 p.m.

The brainchild of Seven Sheds, owner Willie Simpson said the recipe was cooked up to mark the anniversary of the microbrewery's 200th batch of beer.

CHEERS: The creators of Platypus 200 are (back from left) Anvers marketing manager Todd Ashdown, Seven Sheds brewer Willie Simpson, (front) ginseng farmer Siegfried Pyka ...

WHAT do quinoa, chocolate, beer and ginseng all have in common?

It sounds like a riddle but the answer is soon to be sold at the cellar door at Seven Sheds at Railton.

Platypus 200 is the latest dark ale offering from Seven Sheds and was officially launched yesterday as the microbrewery's 200th batch of beer.

Platypus 200 is a collaboration of several main players in the Cradle Coast Tasting Trail and Liberal MP for Braddon Jeremy Rockliff, who was invited to launch the beer, said it was a ``fine example in leadership'' of the type needed to promote agri-tourism into the future.

Mr Rockliff said agri-tourism was a growth area for the region and said collaboration like this would be the way of the future for both industries.

The brainchild of Seven Sheds, owner Willie Simpson said the recipe was cooked up to mark the anniversary of the microbrewery's 200th batch of beer.

``We have always done milestone beers so we were looking to do something because we knew the 200th was coming up,'' Mr Simpson said.

    DEARBORN: Dental office to expand

    - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DEARBORN Advanced Smile Care patients will soon have some elbow room as they wait for their appointments.

The city Zoning Board of Appeals voted 5-0 Thursday to allow the long and narrow waiting room to be expanded by 117 square feet. In addition, a new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant entrance ramp that will be covered with an awning and obscured by a stone wall will be added, architect Joseph Guido told the board.

Its definitely going to be a safety improvement, he said.

The issue had to go before the ZBA for a dimensional variance because after the expansion, the building would be 3,096 square feet, which is 32.9 percent of the lot. In a local business (BA) zoning, the maximum without a variance is 30 percent, or 2,712 square feet in this case.

The business already is compliant with its parking lot size, which will not be affected.

Zoning Administrator Tom Paison recommended the change because it still would conform with nearby commercial buildings, some of which are at 40 percent or slightly higher coverage, and Advanced Smile Care is on an unusual triangle-shaped parcel at 22100 Outer Drive, just east of the Pelham Road-Carlysle intersection. The triangle was created because Outer Drive runs at an angle.

Paison also told the board that the property has been well maintained and has not received code violations.

Board Chairman Stephen Gedert said the addition will enhance the building and be a nice improvement.

The practice is run by Dr. Gary Veraghen, who has been a dentist for 33 years. Hes practiced in Dearborn for nearly 30, and has been in his current office for 10.

B Cellars new Oakville location almost ready

    - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Come spring B Cellars will begin planting a new vineyard in Oakville and in the summer it will vacate its Calistoga location and move into the new winery on Oakville Cross Road.

We are well under way with construction, said Duffy Keys, co-founder and principal. We are about 70 percent complete on the cave excavation. We are targeting mid-June of this year to be operational.

In addition to the existing vines there, B Cellars is adding about six acres of vineyard and will end up with seven to eight of the almost 12 acres planted to predominantly cabernet sauvignon, some cabernet franc and possibly some merlot, Keys said. Continuing to oversee the winemaking is Kirk Venge.

The new location includes a hospitality house that will bring to fruition the vision B Cellars planned for all along, Keys said.

The intent for B Cellars has always been to present our wines in a food-centric manner, he said.

The uncertainty of the winerys current location on the Silver Rose property, along with permitting complications, prohibited B Cellars from accomplishing its food and wine pairings dream.

The look and feel of the project will blend in with the other wineries and buildings on Oakville Cross Road; agrarian with a contemporary twist. The exterior will include rippled steel with a finish made to look like rust, so that the building looks like its been there. There will be a fair bit of glass and a corner of the winemaking facility that reveals the wine tanks inside.

We want to give people a chance to see what goes on behind closed doors, he said.

The hospitality house will include a demonstration kitchen where B Bites of amuse bouche and flatbreads will be prepared to complement the wines being poured that day. The open-concept room is intended to be relaxing, encouraging guests to linger.

The room will have a living room/kitchen environment because, as Keys said, Where do we always end up when we go into somebodys home? The kitchen.

Mayor: 2013 Successful Year for City

    - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Union Mayor Mike Livengood said 2013 was a successful year for the city, and major accomplishments include the completion of two road projects.

We accomplished quite a lot, Livengood said.

Last year the Main Street enhancement project, and Independence Drive resurfacing and roundabout construction were completed.

    Main Street

Livengood noted that the Main Street project took longer than scheduled to complete, and was an inconvenience, but the final product turned out very nice.

The work completed last year included downtown streetscape enhancements.

When traveling west on Main Street, there is a gateway, or portal that includes one monument on each side of the street. That portal separates the residentially zoned district from the B-1 downtown businesses district.

There also is a wall on the south side of the road between McKinley Avenue and Church Street to screen out county parking lots. There were new sidewalks, with a foot-wide colored stamped stripe, installed on both sides of Main Street from McKinley Avenue to Washington Avenue.

    Independence Drive

The project also included stamped concrete crosswalks, new benches and planters.
