LARAMIE Its called the trophy room, and it sits on the west side of the longtime west Laramie business, The Boardwalk.

Inside, more than 50 trophies of all shapes and sizes are mounted on the wall and displayed in cases, along with saddles, antique guns, American Indian artifacts and family heirlooms. The room is open to visitors who pass through the store.

Owner William Rob Vogel, an Albany County native, has run the family business for more than 45 years. The trophy room is his museum of memories, and it shows off his passions for hunting and history.

Some of my most fond memories of my younger life were getting out. No telephone, no cars, no nothing, he said. I have a lot of good memories.

Vogel, 63, was born in Rock River, where his father, Bud, served as mayor and ran a lumberyard and motel. His grandfather homesteaded near Arlington, where his grandmother was the postmistress.

The Vogels moved to Laramie in the 1960s and opened The Boardwalk in 1967, remodeling the original building and constructing additions as they expanded. Inside, custom woodwork adorns the rafters and doors. A back room with one wall made of logs reflects the teenage Vogels desire to live in a log cabin, his wife, Crystal, said.

Today, the Vogels sell and repair saddles and tack, repair shoes and boots and run a Western-themed gift shop.

In the trophy room, a collection of rifles dating back to the 1800s hangs on one wall. One belonged to Vogel as a child living on a Rock River ranch. His mother gave him five bullets at a time, and he had to make them count.

I couldnt just shoot them all up. There were a lot of jackrabbits around the ranch, and theyd just eat you out of house and home. I had to shoot a couple of jackrabbits, he said.

His first antelope is mounted high on the wall near the entrance. He got that one when he was 16, hunting with his grandfather.

OREGON Government agencies often spend every cent they get. Sometimes they dont.

In the past 2 years, Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn has left unspent more than $1 million from his annual budgets.

According to the county treasurers numbers, Harn didnt spend $766,000 in his budget last fiscal year and $572,000 the previous year. His budget includes law enforcement, corrections, and building and grounds for all county property.

In the 2013 budget, Harns unspent money included $350,000 for repairs and maintenance of buildings, including redoing the heating and cooling system for a county building, Treasurer John Coffman said.The sheriff handles the countys buildings and grounds.

Projects were planned, Coffman said, and for whatever reason didnt happen.

While the countys budgeting process wont begin for about 6 months, Ogle County Chairman Kim Gouker said, there might be a review to determine whether the Sheriffs Department or others are being overbudgeted.

Theres no point in budgeting funds, if theyre not necessary, he said.

Harn did not respond to requests for comment.

Gouker said Harn had saved money for the county by working to get favorable contracts for natural gas and electricity for county buildings.

The sheriff is also saving money by having patrol cars fill up at the gas pumps the county owns, he said, and has increased revenue the county receives from federal inmates who are housed by the U.S. Marshals Service at the Ogle County Jail.

Ogle County sheriff leaves money unspent

CHELMSFORD -- A bank and office building is taking shape on North Road that will be closely modeled after an 18th-century home in Cambridge.

The 9,700 square-foot two-story building won approvals from town boards last year and survived a legal appeal from an abutter who challenged the Planning Board's backing of the project, saying the building didn't abide by a preservation restriction on the site.

The building, according to a stipulation signed by the Board of Selectmen in 2000, "shall be modeled" after an 18th-century Cambridge home of British army officer John Vassell. It was the property's former owner, Rodger Currie, a dentist who died in 2011, who wanted the building to have that certain look, said Robert McCrensky, who now owns and is developing the site.

"It's a very prominent family from the 1700s, and he loved the design," McCrensky said, adding later, "I think his dream will come true."

Cedar siding on the front wall and brick side walls, along with intricate architectural details, will make the building unique, he said.

"This may be one of the most historically accurate buildings built in this area in 20 or 30 years," McCrensky said.

Construction crews were pouring a concrete foundation for the building this week, with plans to have the building complete by around August.

The Planning Board granted special-permit approval last summer for a building with a bank and drive-through teller on the first floor and offices on the second floor.

But abutter William Harvey, who owns 23-24 North Road, appealed, saying the project did not comply with the preservation restriction. The only evidence that the proposed building would be modeled after the home of the British officer was a photo of what the front of the building would look like, Harvey said in a lawsuit.

New bank building will have old look

Phil Wood and Jon Gilfry began the year with a new look in office space.

Actually, they have a whole new building.

Construction on the Wealth Partners building started in May 2013 and the business moved into its new location just before Christmas. Dave Boltinghouse was contractor for the building at 1350 N. Bell St., in Fremont.

Wood and Gilfry are partners and wealth advisers for the firm.

Were a growing business. In addition to Fremont, which is our home office, we have offices in Omaha and Lincoln, but this is where the vast majority of our staff is, Wood said.

Including Wood and Gilfry, the group includes four advisers and eight support staff members.

The new building is 7,300 square feet. Wealth Partners is using 5,300 square feet of that space. A bay also is available for another business willing to locate there.

Were getting interest right now, Gilfry said. Hopefully, another local business will be a neighbor of ours here soon.

The building has seven private offices with four additional work spaces. The downstairs portion includes a large conference room with couches, tables and chairs which, along with woodwork, designed to provide a relaxed, homey look.

While presentations can be given in this room, it also will be a place for social functions for clients and is available for community events.

Wealth Partners has new building on Bell Street

HAVERFORD TWP. ---Commissioners Monday approved revisions to final land development/lot consolidation plans for the Quarry Center, 116 Township Line Road, to permit an additional 3,500 square foot, single story office building.

The building is proposed at the northeast corner of the site behind Lowes, on property which was not involved in original development plans for the shopping center, approved in Oct. 2011.

Quarry Center, L.P. anticipates a medical office use, but a tenant has not yet been secured, a spokesperson said.

There were no objections from residents in attendance.

The Planning Commission recommended approval of the revisions at a meeting Jan. 9, subject to compliance with conditions outlined in a letter from the township engineer.

Based on use as a medical office building, projections call for a maximum increase of eight vehicular trips in the a.m. peak period, 12 in the the a.m. peak period, 12 in the p.m. peak period and 13 in the Saturday peak period.

Commissioners also approved in November additional modifications permitting construction of retail shops on a portion of the property originally designed as a pad for a free-standing restaurant with drive-thru window.

Due to the combined changes, the developer was asked to confirm during post-development traffic studies that trip projections for the site are still representative.

Commissioners on Monday also approved major subdivision plans for a 2.95-acre parcel on Harvard Road.

Submitted by Jeffrey Steigerwalt, the plan calls for subdividing the property, former home to McCandless Fuels, into seven lots for seven single-family homes. Continued...
