SALEM - Area residents will have a couple of opportunities to tour the new private patient room tower at Salem Regional Medical Center next weekend, besides attending the tower dedication and the 100th Anniversary Time Capsule burial.

An open house geared toward families will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, featuring activities and interactive attractions for children.

Another open house will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. next Sunday, kicking off with the tower dedication at 2 p.m. inside the concourse which connects the new section to the existing hospital structure.

The Salem Regional Medical Center is making plans for an open house this weekend. The dedication will be followed by the burial of the 100th Anniversary Time Capsule outside at the front of the building next to the flag pole area.

"This is really a once in a lifetime opportunity to come into the hospital and see the largest addition we've ever put on this building," SRMC Director of Public Relations Michele Hoffmeister said.

The dedication ceremony will include remarks by SRMC President/CEO Anita Hackstedde, M.D. and SRMC Board Chairman Derek Hiscox, along with Pastor Robert Rowley, hospital chaplain, blessing the building.

Stock Development has released for sale Phase II of Lakoya in Lely Resort. The second phase is the final single-family home neighborhood in Lely Resort.

Stock Development will be hosting a Grand Opening Weekend Event Feb. 22 and 23. This will be the first chance for the public to tour Lakoyas 16 new furnished models and the completion of a two-year expansion and renovation of the Players Club & Spa.

In Phase II of Lakoya, Stock is marketing 216 new homes, available in seven series of floor plans ranging from 1,882 to 4,155 square feet under air.

We are adding nearly 13,000 square feet under air to the existing structure. Work is nearing completion on a second resort pool.

The new pool is in addition to a 7,500-square-foot resort style swimming pool plus a 2,500-square-foot exercise and lap pool with cabanas. There is a new full kitchen at the Tiki Bar, which has seven 50-inch flat screen TVs and a tennis facility. A Bark Park is also open for the exclusive use of members who are dog owners.

VINELAND The grass is always greener on the other side.

In this case, the other side is the aftermath of Ontarios pesticide ban. While lawns have suffered greatly since the government banned the use of cosmetic pesticides for home use, they will be greener due in part to research taking place at the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre. The centre has been studying alternatives to pesticides since before the legislation came into place on Earth Day of that year. More specifically, the centre has been working with two types of predatory organisms to control insects and weeds as well as testing new breeds of grass in partnership with commercial breeders.

Historically, chemicals have been the easy way out, said Michael Brownbridge, who heads up the department handling the turf research program. There was never a level of interest in biologicals as pest control.

Until the use of pesticides was banned in Ontario.

The research team has had success with nematodes a parasitic worm specific to certain insects and a type of fungi.

We are looking to the natural environment for control, said Brownbridge, who was recently recognize amongst his peers as a leader in the industry. At Vineland, we are taking an integrated approach.

Brownbridge said relying on one method of control has been a problem in the past. He sees more changes to legislation further preventing the use of chemical maintenance products. More specifically, Brownbridge predicts a ban on fertilizer products, which is why the research happening at the centre is significant.

In agriculture in general, weve historically relied on one type of control, said Brownbridge, and that has been spraying with pesticides.

And while pesticides do have a place in the agriculture industry, Brownbridge said it is best to take an integrated approach.
