The scaffolding that has earned the All Saints church in Dorchester the nickname the Green Monster of Peabody Square could soon be a thing of the past as construction crews prepare to finish up renovations to the churchs exterior.
Since the beginning of summer crews with Consigli Construction have been working diligently on the multi-million dollar restoration of the 121-year-old church. The second phase of the project, expected to begin in January 2014, will include interior repairs.
Although the restoration of the church is exciting for its 350 odd parishioners, the detail crews are putting into the project has also generated a lot of interest outside of the church community, according to Jeffery Gonyeau, a parishioner at the church who is providing technical support for the project.
You really dont find many groups that go to this length during a restoration project, said Gonyeau. In the preservation world this has gotten a lot of attention and weve even led tours of the work. It shows that these high level preservation efforts can and should happen in all of Bostons neighborhoods.
From the use of slate and copper, to the painstaking process of removing rotting masonry and replacing it, Gonyeau said crews are sticking with historical materials and making sure the church doesnt lose any of its character. The property is also of particular interest for architecture buffs because it was the first building designed by Ralph Adams Cram, the man behind the Sagamore Bridge and West Point.
In some sense it [the churchs restoration] kind of completes the work that has been taking place in Peabody Square area, said Gonyeau. From the Carruth Building to Ashmont Station a lot of work has gone into the area and this is part of that revitalization.
The church itself may have a long history in the neighborhood, but the project promises to bring even more history to the community, as organizers prepare to install an 84-year-old organ manufactured by Ernest Skinner, once a resident of Dorchester.

LITTLE EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Since Hurricane Sandy, the congregation at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church has thinned because so many people never returned to their storm-damaged homes.
The church is doing everything it can to stay financially stable and keep its doors open. Inside the church - built in 2006 - some of the lights have been shut off because it is too expensive to operate them.
"The Little Egg Harbor-Tuckerton area was forgotten during Sandy, which speaks so highly of the community here. People pulled together and helped people," the Rev. K. Michael "Mick" Lambeth told The Press of Atlantic City (http://bit.ly/1eIP27u).
Similar to the days immediately following Sandy, the residents and church staff continue to pull together, he said.
"Even though we had no power the very next morning after the storm, we were here. People came forward to help, asking, 'What can I do?'" parish coordinator Cathy Mazanek said.
The aftermath of Sandy has not been kind to the township's residents or to St. Theresa's, Lambeth said. Each day, some of the residents who have returned to their homes visit St. Theresa's for some form of assistance.
Neither the township nor the state has a definitive number of how many local people did not return home after Sandy, but Lambeth said the proof is glaring during Sunday Mass.
Lambeth estimates the church lost about 1,000 families from the congregation. Before the storm, the church had about 5,000 year-round and summer families. In the weeks after the storm, the church lost about $120,000 in revenue, and finances have not improved since then.
Between the mortgage and other expenses each month, it costs about $60,000 to operate the church, Lambeth said. Before Sandy, parishioners gave about $13,000 per week, Lambeth said. That number dipped after the storm to $8,000 per month at its lowest.

A development company is seeking city approval to build a 108-unit apartment building in Allston along the same block of Brainerd Road where the company opened a 100-unit apartment building in the summer and recently began construction on another 79-unit complex.
About half of the units would be studios and the rest would be one-bedroom apartments, said company founder and chairman Bruce Percelay. He said there would also be a roof-top fitness center that connects to an outdoor roof patio, "so you can work out and then chill out."
The building would span two parcels at 75 Brainerd Road and 10 Redford St., which together comprise just over a half acre. The properties have housed a single-story warehouse building, which was recently razed, and an auto repair shop, which will soon be torn down.
State records show the developer bought the Brainerd Road property for $2.5 million in July. Percelay declined to say how much the company will spend to buy the Redford Street property or how much the project would cost.
He noted that the final plans for the project are subject to approval, and thus there is potential for change.
"This plan is our intention, but we're still awaiting city and neighborhood approval," Percelay said.
The proposed building would join a two-block area that the prominent Back Bay-based real estate company recently dubbed the Green District.
The company has taken an environmentally-friendly focus at several apartment buildings it owns and leases there, including at two new developments one of which achieved LEED Silver status and the other LEED Gold.
Percelay said the proposed project at 75 Brainerd Road hopes to achieve the highest energy efficient rating of LEED Platinum.

When it's dry and sunny, residents along Palani Avenue go about their daily lives. But when it rains and pours, there's a flooding issue here, especially for the residents of one apartment building off Date Street.
The parking garage at 707 Palani Avenue is below ground. And when heavy rain causes water to rush down the street, a lot of that water ends up in the garage, just like it did in 2012, submerging cars and the stairways to individual units.
Lance Katahara and other residents have complained to the city about the problem for years. But they've been even more nervous this year, since the city is in a $1.4 million project to try to fix the problem.
"We want this done as much as they do. We know they've been waiting a long time," said City Council member Ann Kobayashi. "And I really apologize for all the delays and the concerns, all the problems they've had to deal with."
In the meantime, the storm drains just in front of the building are covered to mitigate construction debris from the project to replace the storm drains, which means residents still have their contingency plans. Katahara brought several sand bags, which are placed on rolling pallets in the garage.
"We had sandbags before, but carrying 50-pound bags up, one at a time up that ramp, is not fun," he said.
Residents of other buildings say the flooding has plagued the whole neighborhood along the street, which runs between Kapahulu Avenue and Date Street.
Arnold Tang showed us how high the water gets in the garage of his apartment building, farther up the block toward Kapahulu.
"You see the mark? There's yellow, right here," Tang said, pointing to a mark along the garage wall. "Eight inches high."

Pubs and restaurants in the city opened their patios to sun seekers, and are reporting packed crowds this weekend.
The unusually warm January weekend has hot spots on 17th avenue cashing in.
Its usually busy inside but there are defiantly full patios now, said Justin KukuruDz from the Ship and Anchor.
Shannon Dressel from The National Beer Hall says they will be keeping their patio open as long as the weather allows.
Our patio is fully set, so are our neighbours over at the ship, so I think just because of the extra nice weather people are really taking advantage of it, said Drerssel, adding outdoor heaters are a big help.
Andrew Brassard, with Broken City, in the core, tells 660News, as soon as they opened their patio, about 10 tables filled up immediately.
He said it definitely took some work to get the patios ready.
We spend hours clearing the two feet of snow and ice off of it, said Brassard.
Still, some businesses arent able to get in on the sun seeker crowds telling 660News they are still buried under too much snow to make their patios work.
