    South Tahoe family needs help

    - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Longtime South Lake Tahoe residents Johny and Bobby Russo, owners of Sierra Appliance Repair (previously known as Honest Johns), are experiencing a financial crisis. Their adult son, Tony, has suffered a catastrophic illness and has been hospitalized at Renown Medical Center in Reno since early November. He is making improvement, but the prognosis is for a recovery expected to take at least a year.

    Johnny and Bobby Russo

The Russos have worked together running their business for the last 30-plus years, with Johnny doing the repairs and Bobby handling the office duties. They have made moral support to Tony a priority, which has caused their business to suffer. The combination of lost revenue from the business and unexpected expenses from traveling to Reno has placed them in a financial crisis.

They will gratefully accept any help to get through this crisis. Contributions by check or gift card (Costco, gas, grocery store, etc.) may be mailed to Abi Terry, P.O. Box 9285, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96158.

Questions can be directed to [emailprotected]

Apartment building boom in Edmonton area will add 5,000 rental units

    - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

EDMONTON - Apartment buildings are sprouting up across Edmonton at a rate not seen in recent memory.

There are 46 apartment developments under construction in the region, according to commercial real estate firm CBRE. Those projects will add about 5,000 new rental units to the market.

An average year prior to the building boom would have been 1,000, said Bradyn Arth, an associate with CBREs national apartment group Edmonton office.

The last time Edmonton saw similar volumes of apartment construction was in the late 1970s and early 1980s, according to Bradley Gingerich, senior vice-president of CBREs Edmonton group.

The biggest story is new construction, said Gingerich. Its really unprecedented.

Sales of apartment buildings are also high as investors look to capitalize on the regions razor-thin vacancy rate and population growth.

We just see tremendous activity in the market on resale as well as new development, Arth said.

Sales volume involving existing apartment buildings totalled more than $301.5 million in 2013, up 35 per cent year-over-year. There were 51 buildings which changed hands, involving more than 2,200 suites.

Landlords are responding to Edmontons tight vacancy rate and rapidly growing population. The number of people moving to Alberta for work has pushed down the vacancy rate to 1.2 per cent in Edmonton during the last three months of 2013, according to CBREs fourth-quarter market report. Thats even lower than the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.s fall rental market vacancy rate of 1.4 per cent. A year earlier, it was 1.7 per cent.

Net migration into Alberta reached 86,939 in 2012 and is projected at 95,600 in 2013 and 68,100 in 2014, says the CMHC.

Green Bay Apartment Fire Contained to Parking Garage

    - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Green Bay -

Green Bay fire crews are investigating what caused a fire in an underground parking garage at an apartment building on Green Bay's east side.

The fire broke out about 8 a.m. Thursday at the Nicolet Apartments in the 200 block of Huth Street.

Heavy black smoke could be seen pouring from the building, and evacuated residents looked on with worry as crews worked to control the fire.

"Terrifying, I guess because all of my stuff is in there. My car is down there where all the smoke is coming from," said resident Amanda Delveaux.

Delveaux says she got out before crews arrived.

"The fire alarm was going off, so I looked outside to see if there was smoke or anything. I didn't see anything, but started to pack a bag and grab my cat. So then my apartment started to fill with smoke and I got out right away," she said.

No one was hurt. Officials say they were able to contain the fire to the parking structure, and flames did not spread to the apartments above. Investigators believe the construction of the building helped prevent the situation from becoming something much worse.

"The structure had concrete, a concrete ceiling, and all the little holes that would poke through during construction were properly sealed up. That's why it wasn't able to spread," said Lt. Nick Craig, Green Bay Metro Fire Department. "A lot different than an older building that doesn't have the fire precautions built into it."

The American Red Cross said displaced residents were evacuated to Green Bay Preble where volunteers assessed their needs. The Green Bay Metro Fire Department says residents may be able to return to their apartments sometime Thursday. An engineer will check electrical wiring to make sure it's safe.

Chicago Tops Bed Bug Cities List for Second Year in a Row

    - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chicago tops Orkin's 2013 list of bed bug cities for the 2nd year in a row. Bed bugs continue to bite their way across the country. Nearly half the cities on the list rose in number of treatments. Orkin's parent company, Rollins, Inc., ...

ATLANTA, Jan. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Chicago tops the 2013 Bed Bug Cities List, released today by pest control leader Orkin. The Windy City's bed bug problem was serious enough that the City Council passed an ordinance in July 2013 requiring condo associations to have a formal management plan in place for the detection, inspection and treatment of these pests.

In the South, two major cities had the biggest jumps on the list from 2012 to 2013-- Nashville moved up 17 spots while Charlotte climbed 18 spots. Other cities that made notable leaps up the list include Champaign/Springfield, Ill., Pittsburgh and Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville, S.C. On the other end of the spectrum, Omaha, Neb., Colorado Springs/Pueblo, Colo., Lexington, Ky. and Buffalo, N.Y. settled into significantly lower spots on the list than last year. Of the five new cities on the list, three are in the Midwest Toledo, Ohio, Peoria, Ill. and Davenport, Iowa/Moline, Ill. New Orleans and Kansas City took the final two spots on the list as new entries. On the east coast, six cities took positions lower on the list, including three cities in New York-- Albany, Buffalo and New York City.

Bed bugs continue to bite their way across the country as evidenced by the more than 20 percent increase in Rollins', Orkin's parent company, bed bug business compared to 2012. The nationwide resurgence of the bed bug population prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to release a joint statement in 2012 advising the public of the emerging health issues associated with bed bugs.

"While studies show that bed bugs do not spread disease, the physical and mental health consequences are well documented and of serious public concern," said Orkin entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. "Once bed bugs are inside your home or business, they can reproduce quickly and can travel from place to place in personal belongings and even on people. They can also move from place to place on their own, independently of objects."

Because every bed bug scenario is different, it's important for homeowners to call on a professional who can create a solution tailored to their home's needs.

The list released by Orkin ranks the cities by the number of bed bug treatments Orkin performed from January to December 2013, along with any shift in ranking compared to January to December 2012.

Harrison offers the following tips to homeowners for bed bug prevention:

West Linn turkeys inviting themselves into backyards, patios and decks

    - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

West Linn's wild turkeys may seem a little intimidating to young students at Willamette Primary School. But a lot of adults in the city's Willamette neighborhood have been enjoying the visits for quite a while.

"The turkeys have been in the Willamette neighborhood since October or November," said Shelly Wert, who lives near Willamette Park. "They've been hanging out in several other neighbors' yards near the school."

Sean and Rebecca Weiss, who live just five houses down from Willamette Primary, said the turkeys aren't at all bashful about pecking around in their backyard. One bold, inquisitive bird even peeked in the back door.

"Two were regular visitors to our yard, foraging through our garden throughout the summer and falland picking off all the raspberries -- their favorite," said Rebecca Weiss. "They were not afraid of people."

On Wednesday, officials at Willamette Primary School called West Linn police because a turkey was approaching students as they neared the front door a little unnerving because the bird is almost as tall as they are.

Officer Brad Moyle saw the turkey, but was unable to catch it. He guessed that someone had hand-fed the bird sometime in the past, unwittingly teaching it that people any people will give it a tasty handout.

Moyle said Community Service Officer Peggy Jones planned to meet with members of the American Wildlife Foundation, a Molalla-based nonprofit, to explore the possibility of trapping and relocating turkeys who have lost their fear and became nuisances.

For adults, however, the birds mostly have been a source of wildlife-in-the-city entertainment.

"We just 'shoosh' them off when we want them to move on, and they go peacefully," Wert said. "I hate to think they would be euthanized. We've enjoyed having them around."
