FORT WAYNE City-county dispatchers who are now crammed into a basement room of the Rousseau Centre are poised to move in three weeks to the sixth floor, where brand-new digs await them.
About 75 dispatchers and support staffers got a sneak preview of the new Allen County-Fort Wayne 911 call center, and many brought their families with them, Executive Director Tim Lee said Tuesday during a separate tour for the media.
Employees working in the 5,600-square-foot section of the basement will report to the new center Feb. 4.
One of the unique features of the new call center is that the staff helped design the 8,400-square-foot dispatch room.
Anytime departments are consolidated, there is a lot of animosity and strife, and we tried to counter that by getting everyone involved in the design, Lee said.
Besides offering spectacular views through the shatter-resistant, wall-to-wall windows, the emergency center offers 25 dispatching stations with room for expansion.
Standard staffing is about 13 to 15 dispatchers, but we now have the ability to ramp up if necessary, Lee said.
In addition, if other county centers such as New Haven or the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority have a system failure, a dispatching station could be set up with locale-specific coordinates in a matter of minutes, Lee said.
Gone also is the separation of city and county police and fire dispatching.
All city and county police and fire functions are located adjacently in the large open room, eliminating the past practice of dispatchers having to call from one room to another to communicate with each other.

Tonawanda News Renovations on the Tonawanda Middle and High Schools music rooms could begin this week as part of the districts nearly $12 million endeavor, capital project managers told the school board at Tuesday nights regular meeting.
We met with the contractors at a kick-off meeting, but we havent received the contracts back yet, Gloria Ciminelli, of Pike Co., said. Once we get them, construction will begin.
Earlier in January, the board held a special meeting to approve the bids for the project to ensure construction began on time. The renovations were set to begin today, Ciminelli said.
The bids were very successful, we were under budget and it will allow us to start on time, she said.
The district originally planned to complete additions at the school for the two rooms, but the bids for that portion of the project came in more than $600,000 over budget.
The board then decided to renovate the two rooms instead of completing the expansion. The work will include raising the roof of the band room and expanding the width of the choral room to provide more space and better acoustics.
But change in plans meant the projects architectural firm, Wendel, had to go back to the drawing board and prepare an addendum for state Department of Education approval. The addition was initially set to be complete in November.
Once construction begins, the demolition of the choral room will take place first, and temporary enclosures will ensure the safety of students. Demolition of the band room will take place next.
When the weather breaks, in mid-March, well take the band room roof off. Thats a major part of this project, Ciminelli said.
The work will be complete by the end of June.

State Sen. Robert Hedlund is scaling back plans for his second restaurant in Weymouth Landing in response to safety concerns raised by Braintree officials.
Hedlund, already a part owner of Four Square Bar and Restaurant on Commercial Street, earned town approval Tuesday for a restaurant called Trio that he plans to open in a former salon across the street from his other restaurant. The Weymouth Republican had initially sought approval for a 87-seat restaurant with an outdoor patio, but he cut the number of seats back to 67 after Braintrees planning board raised concerns about the patio.
Its a locally owned restaurant that we think will benefit the neighborhood, said Hedlunds attorney, James Baldassini. That area does need some fresh blood.
Trio is Hedlunds second joint venture with chef Marko Piro Fani, coming three years after the partners opened Four Square in an empty restaurant space originally built in the 1930s. Hedlund said the modern kitchen planned for Trio will allow Fani to craft a more varied menu of casual American cuisine.
The restaurant, which will open at 7 a.m. seven days a week, will also offer a more upscale breakfast menu compared to other restaurants in the area, Hedlund said. Four Square opens at 11:30 a.m. most days and does not serve breakfast.
Hedlund said his plans for Trio had been pushed back by a longer-than-expected town approval process. He said he would like to begin construction immediately, but he doesnt know when hell be able to open for business.
I thought wed be open by now, he said.
Hedlund said he would eventually like to build the planned patio, which he called the centerpiece of his original proposal, but the project could be complicated by restrictions on the liquor license approved by Braintrees licensing board Tuesday. The board approved a special license that can only be used for restaurants with 75 seats or fewer because it had approved its last all-alcohol license earlier in the meeting for a sports bar proposed for South Shore Plaza.
The restaurant, called Buffalo Wild Wings, is slated to include a total of 268 seats in part of the space previously occupied by Crate and Barrel. The restaurant would be sealed off from the interior of the mall and would have doors that open to the parking lot.
Buffalo Wild Wings has more than 900 locations across the United States and Canada.

Houzz, the fast-growing website and mobile app for all things home remodeling and design, today announced that it has opened offices in London, Berlin and Sydney. This marks the companys first official international expansion, but as its co-founder and CEO Adi Tatarko told me earlier this week, 35 percent of Houzzs traffic already comes from outside of the U.S.
The company has hired local managers to run these offices. In addition, it has hired Oliver Jung to oversee its international efforts. Jung previously launched and led Airbnbs international expansion.
As Tatarko stressed when I talked to her, the company plans to tackle its international expansion in the same way it grew its business in the U.S. This means it will focus on growing its community and internationalizing its content when necessary. It wont, however, focus on marketing. Tatarko believes that this will automatically follow as the community grows.
Sales are never our first priority, Tatarko told me. We are first and foremost a community and technology company. Thats how we built Houzz in the U.S. and thats how we plan to grow internationally, too.
Even today, without any specific marketing or local representation, Houzz is already seeing international home-remodeling pros, architects and others connect with its users all around the world. Because of this, Houzz already has 85,000 professionals from outside the U.S. in its directory. Just like Houzz managed to be a disruptor in the U.S. remodeling business, it also hopes to be able to disrupt some of the international markets where most of this business is still done the traditional way and basic word of mouth marketing is still the main way for many of these professionals to connect with potential customers.
This international expansion will also be good for Houzzs U.S. users, Tatarko believes. It will give them access to more ideas and trends and expose everybody to different ways of doing things.
As part of this announcement, Houzz also released its latest user numbers. The service now sees 16 million unique users from 184 countries every month. Professionals have now uploaded over 2.5 million images to the site, including 1 million retina-quality images that were uploaded over the course of 2013. Its app was downloaded over 6 million times last year, for a total of 12 million downloads.
The company itself has grown to 170 employees now, but as Tatarko stressed, the management structure still remains very flat. There is no middle management, and the founders still interview every prospective employee themselves. While the new international offices will have local managers, the idea is to replicate the same kind of structure in these outposts, too.
