Art That Reminds Me of Home

    - January 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

During this time of year I like to reflect upon and appreciate all the blessings in my life (...also eat a lot of carbs and watch TV marathons). But lately I've been dwelling on how lucky we are to have so much amazing art created and inspired by the American landscape. I would have no problem filling hundreds--thousands!--of pages of landscape paintings from East Coast to West that remind me of "home" in the broadest sense.

I could start with landscape artist Frederic Edwin Church. He traveled throughout the Americas, creating works of art that make me want to stay outdoors forever. Twilight in the Wilderness is one of my favorite landscape paintings and captures the natural beauty of America without being a depiction of a specific place.

O'Keeffe's landscape art of New Mexico made such an impression on me when I first saw it that, in a way, it now defines that region for me more than the actual landscape does. The artist was inspired by nature and yet took that into a completely new place, visually speaking; making works that give a sense of the landscape but also bring to mind ideas about vastness, loneliness, and beauty.

Ruscha's roadside gas stations make me a little bit envious because they are of a time and place I never got to see--when taking to the road was an adventure and meant freedom and independence, not the rage-filled grind of today. I also love the graphic, slick, Pop qualities of Ruscha's work--how he can make a gas station feel like it is larger than life with a few diagonal lines, though he simultaneously shows the homage to be a bit absurd as well.

California through David Hockney's eyes is a composite of a lovely urban jungle. His swimming pool paintings give a sense of the West Coast that isn't all glamour and glitz, although he does show off those elements through the bright colors and modern architecture that fills his landscape paintings--and yet there is an introspective quality to the paintings that sometimes goes unsung.

P.S. What artist or painting that is quintessentially "American" comes to mind for you? Leave a comment and let me know!

Art History Lecture With Elliot Anderson

    - January 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Some think of fine art as something high-society folks admire through a pair of designer bifocals while sipping wine and caressing their fancy cat. In truth, art is seen and appreciated by all in one form or another, and it is a link that bridges cultures and generations--particularly the ubiquitous landscape painting. There's a good chance you've seen one on a hotel room wall, in a doctor's office waiting area or at Aunt Martha's house, and there's a good chance it made its way into Elliot Anderson's exhibit, Average Landscapes. Anderson, who has worked in computer technology since the early '80s, culls tourist photographs of 19th century landscape paintings from the Internet and uses a software program he wrote to create digital composites. In his lecture, Anderson will talk about the "link between American landscape painting and American tourism" and how Average Landscapes--currently part of the Wish You Were Here exhibition at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts--"reimagines the American desire for the sublime." Leave the cat at home, but bring the bifocals just in case. Arrive at 5:30 p.m. for a tour of the exhibition.

Who has had the greatest influence on you and why? My parents. My mother was a talented designer who worked hand in hand with my father, an award-winning builder. My mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer when I was born, and my parents fought that battle together, as a team, until her death 27 years later. What is amazing is that my childhood memories are not those of sickness or self-pity, but of joy and wonder. We were always taught to face life one day at a time and live each day to the fullest.

Designer Digs: Waldo Fernandez’s $9.5M Beach Pad Will ‘Calm The Soul’

    - January 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tuesday, January 14, 2014, by Lily di Costanzo

Prolific interior designer Waldo Fernandezwho's designed everything from Elizabeth Taylor's old stomping grounds to Academy Awards greenroomsis focused on a much more personal project of late, namely selling his own East Hampton, N.Y. home. New to the market and asking for $9.5M, the six-bedroom home is a good bit pricier than the California pad he sold back in Septemberthough it does possess the fresh, stylishly casual feel all of Fernandez's homes, including his much-obsessed-over place in Beverly Hills. Measuring in at 6,000 square feet, this two-story home promises to "calm and nourish the creative soul,"according to some yogi-esque brokerbabblewith a wood-paneled kitchen, an informal living room with low-slung, slightly beach-y furnishings, and a sunny music room connected to the main house via skybridge. Dark wood detailing and a rather neutral color palette throughout tie the decor together, while such extravagant details as a massage room make the place especially, well, nourishing for the soul. Outside, there's a lotus-filled pondmeant to "stir up images of Kyoto, Viet Nam or Thailand"a black granite infinity pool, and beach access just five blocks away. Do take a look:
