INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The warm thaw is good news for roads and sidewalks, but could be bad news for homeowners. Roofing companies say they are starting to see problems.
Ice dams are when ice clogs up gutters, and they are the main concern for roofing companies.
The companies 24-Hour News 8 spoke with say that's a sign of a bigger problem. They said homeowners should beware that there isn't a quick fix.
With one glance at an older home, roofing experts already know a leak in the walls could be in its future.
Tim Williams runs T. Morgan Construction and knows his company is going to get a little busier in the coming days.
The phones start ringing in the office and people want you to come out and get rid of the ice that's on their roof, he said.
While it might seem like a good idea to chip away at the ice or remove the snow to keep a leak from happening, roofers disagree.
The first thing that you don't want to do is begin taking a hammer or a shovel or anything to your roof.
Williams said that might damage the gutters or shingles, creating more problems in the long run.
So rather than finding yourself cleaning up a flooded mess in your home, Williams says your best bet is prevention.

A LANDSCAPER who posed as a roofer to carry out 9,000 worth of shoddy work has been given a suspended jail term. Bill Buckley suffered in the recession and resorted to roofing to try to keep his family together, Bristol Crown Court heard.
But, due to his hopeless lack of ability and aggressive trading, he ended up in court after taking 9,300 from three customers for useless or unnecessary repairs.
In one case he was paid more than 4,000 to install a new garage roof but instead he demolished the garage and built a carport, which leaked rain and was too short for the car it was intended for.
Buckley, 45, of Whiteladies Road with a Clifton-based company, pleaded guilty to three offences under the Fraud Act 2006, and five under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.
The prosecution was brought by Bristol City Council Trading Standards staff after complaints were made about the trading practices of Buckley and his company JB Roofing, based at Triangle West.
Judge Michael Longman imposed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He ordered Buckley to do 300 hours' unpaid work and be subject to a year's supervision.
The judge also made a five-year order banning Buckley from doing building work, including construction, maintenance and repair.
Judge Longman told him: "You pleaded guilty to eight offences, representing a course of behaviour whereby, working on people's homes, you used dishonest and unsavoury business practice. You have no skill as a roofer. You believed it might prove more lucrative during an economic downturn."
Buckley pleaded guilty to the fraudulent claim that he was a "specialist" in roofing.

January 9, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Erie Otters Barrie, Ontario - The Erie Otters shook off losing a three goal lead in the second to pull away from the Barrie Colts 6-5 Thursday night at the Barrie Molson Centre.
The Otters were invigorated with the additions of Connor McDavid, Adam Pelech Dylan Strome and Andre Burakovsky, who joined the team today for their first game back following international play. Oscar Dansk also joined the club, but did not start.
Barrie jumped out to an early lead just 1:22 into the game when Brendan Lemieux tallied first. Erie Answered back with a pair of goals, one from Connor Brown and the other shorthanded from Michael Curtis, to take a 2-1 lead. Jake Dotchin tied the game on the power play at 14:57 of the first. Dane Fox answered back with a power play goal of his own just 20 seconds later to regain the lead. Curtis fired home another at the end of the period to give the Otters a 4-2 lead into the break.
The Otters were in a good spot after Connor McDavid scored another power play tally 33 seconds into the second period. Barrie wasn't going to give easily at home as a pair of goals in just 17 seconds would re-energize the team and building. Garret Hooey tallied first with a power play goal at 5:31 of the second. Then Tyson Fawcett made it a one goal game shortly after, chasing Devin Williams from the net after making 11 saves on 15 shots. Oscar Dansk entered the game, but became the goaltender of record after surrendering the tying goal to Cordell James late in the period.
After spending most of the second period on the penalty kill, the Otters finally got back to playing hockey at even strength. Using that to their advantage, Erie went to work. On the forecheck, McDavid handed the puck over to Andre Burakovsky, who then found a wide open Travis Dermott at the left point. Dermott walked in and blew the slap shot past Daniel Gibl, giving the Otter a 6-5 lead. The Otters fended off the Colts at the end of regulation for the win, despite being on the penalty kill and Barrie taking their goaltender off.
Andre Burakovsky recorded four assists on the night, extending his assist streak to 10 games. Dansk picked up his 17th win of the year. Erie will travel to Owen Sound to take on the Attack Friday night at 7:30.
