FRISCO, Texas Towson trailed North Dakota State, 21-7, at halftime of Saturdays Football Championship Subdivision title game, but nothing took more of a beating than the turf at Toyota Stadium.

The Bermuda-grass field at the 20,500-seat facility was constantly getting dug up by players, and as many as 40 staffers from the stadium and the NCAA flooded the field in between changes of possessions to stamp down the turf.

Towson running backs Terrance West and Darius Victor each tripped on separate running plays in the second and third quarter, and Bison senior quarterback Brock Jensen had to jump on one loose chunk of grass before lining up under center in the third period.

Nick Shafer, the stadium's vice president of operations blamed the weather for the poor field conditions, saying in a written statement distributed at halftime, "The facility replaced the turf on the field between the hash marks on Nov. 18. Shortly thereafter, an ice storm came through Frisco and ice sat on the field for a week. This prevented the grass from taking root underneath the turf. We haven't changed any field preparation from years' past. The only difference this year is that weather did not cooperate with us."

Tigers coach Rob Ambrose dismissed any notion that the turf affected the play. "In the end, we played in snow, red turf, busted turf, you name it," he said, referring to a snowstorm that blanketed the team's win against Eastern Illinois and the red-colored field at Eastern Washington. "It doesn't matter."

Fans and viewers of the game took to Twitter to point out the hazardous conditions, and the Wikipedia entry on Toyota Stadium was swiftly updated to reflect the poor nature of the field.

GRAFTON Dragon Boat Club wants the people of the Clarence Valley to join around 62,000 people around Australia in the search for three portable gazebos that went missing from its clubhouse last month.

Club president Martin Thompson said news of the thefts, which the club only discovered recently, had been posted on the Dragon Boats Australia Facebook page, which had 62,000 members.

Mr Thompson said the biggest of the three gazebos had a big Grafton Dragon

Boats Club logo on it and another had NRMA Roadside Assistance all around the skirting.

"We've let everyone know on Facebook so they'll be keeping their eyes open and we would like everyone in the Clarence Valley to do the same," Mr Thompson said.

He said the club had last used the gazebos at its final regatta of the year in November and locked them away in its shed.

"A couple of members had noticed the biggest of the gazebos was missing, but we thought someone had borrowed it for Christmas," Mr Thompson said.

However, a more detailed inspection soon after revealed three of the club's five gazebos was missing.

"We thought something was a big odd, because the door of the shed had become stuck and we had to wiggle and wobble it to get it open," he said.

Blood Cotil (1/4) was still going well in front on his fencing debut when he hit the penultimate obstacle pretty hard, allowing Jimmy Mangan's charge, ridden by his son Paddy, to come home unchallenged.

The 7/2 chance had been the only one to keep tabs on the Willie Mullins-trained hot-pot but he looked destined for second place until the demise of the classy five-year-old and jockey Paul Townend.

West Council took the runner-up spot, 24 lengths adrift of Castle Wings, who was winning for the first time over fences at the 13th attempt.

The winning trainer revealed Castle Wings could be aimed at the Thyestes Chase at Gowran on January 23.

He said: "He ran a great race at Limerick (second over Christmas) and I did worry that this race was coming a bit quick for him. But if you're not in, you can't win!

"I'd like to have a crack at the Thyestes if he gets in at the weights. It's been a lucky race for us in the past."

Mullins and Townend had struck with Wicklow Brave (2/5 favourite), who had little difficulty landing the odds in the McCarthy Insurance Group Maiden Hurdle.

Winner of his last three bumpers, the five-year-old coasted to a seven-length success on his hurdles bow.

Wings swoops at Cork

Troy Maxson was a man before his time, but his legacy remains one of theaters most potent.

The middle-aged garbage man at the center of August Wilsons Fences, Maxons youth was defined by the baseball talent he showed as a star player in the Negro Leagues. But because he was born too early to play in the majors, he is determined to shield his son Cory from similar disappointment.

The play, which won Wilson a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award in 1987, chronicles in detail specific trials of African-American life in 1957 Pittsburgh.

But it resonates with timeless power as it delves into relationships that fray under long-simmering frustration a father and son divided by generational changes, a husband and wife whose everyday sacrifices whittle away at their happiness as well as loyalties and bonds that cannot be undone.

The play is so textured and layered with language, with thought, with feeling, with family, with hope, with dreams, with love, with disappointment, and, finally with forgiveness and self-acceptance, says Phylicia Rashad, who will direct the play at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton beginning Friday.

And history, lets not leave that out, she adds. There was so much to attract my attention and to earn my devotion.

Rashad helms the show immediately following a Long Wharf Theatre production in New Haven that received complimentary reviews.

The cast includes Esau Pritchett as Troy; Chris Myers as Cory; Portia as Troys wife, Rose; Phil McGlaston as the neighbor Bono; Jared McNeill as Troys older son, Lyons; and G. Alvarez Reid as Troys brother, Gabriel, who suffered a head injury in World War II.

Rashad rose to fame as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show and has maintained a strong presence in the theater. In 2004, she became the first African-American woman to win a Tony Award for best actress in a play for A Raisin in the Sun, which she reprised on television in 2008.

Also in 2004, she appeared as Esther, a mystical figure believed to be 285 years old, in Wilsons Gem of the Ocean on Broadway.

Denis Hogan is a brilliant placer of his horses and looks to have found another opportunity for LUKE'S BENEFIT, who won over hurdles at Fairyhouse last month and completed a double over fences at Punchestown on New Year's Eve. He's in such good heart that a 6lb penalty looks manageable and a hat-trick beckons. Treat Yourself was conceding 12lb to the selection when beaten seven lengths over hurdles at Thurles in February so the revised weights put him in with a shout on his handicap debut over fences. Golden Ticket landed a novices' handicap here in November but was very disappointing when strongly fancied at Navan a month later. Worldor has won twice over timber but hasn't shown much so far over fences, though he makes his handicap bow here.

There is a glint in 25-year-old Rana Hashims eye. It seems like just yesterday when he lost his employment as a rider at a small company that downsized. It seems like just yesterday when he was picking odd jobs as a plumber and electrician to scrape through for his parents, wife and child. It seems like just yesterday when his wife was selling her jewellery collection to fund his admission and transport expenses. It seems like just yesterday when life was becoming a chore.

But not today.

Today, Rana Hashim is not simply a proud alumnus of Aman Tech, a large-scale vocational training institute established by the Aman Foundation in Karachis Korangi Industrial Area. He has also just received an offer of employment from a company in Bahrain as an air-conditioning and refrigeration technician. Life is about to take-off, and he couldnt be grateful enough for his Aman Tech experience.

Sprawling over six acres, Aman Tech has six fully equipped computer labs, a library, 18 workshops and a students breakout area. Groups of students gather around work tables on spotless floors and amidst hydraulic floor jacks, elaborate arrays of tools and instruments mounted on slick slat walls, simulator car engines, air compressors and all the nifty gizmos that make it a dream lab where a young man can play real life Lego.

In sharp contrast to greasy auto workshops, makeshift garages and dingy, badly-lit shops where an apprentice learns from a master, the Aman Tech premises are bright, air-conditioned and state-of-the-art yet simple. The institute imparts vocational training in disciplines as varied and specialised as automobiles, general electric, mechanical, refrigeration and air-conditioning, welding, fabrication, pipe work, plumbing and electronics.

After a year, students are ready to take on challenges at the highest levels and all this at a nominal fee. The only admission pre-requisite is matriculation or even below. Aman Tech has already improved the lives of over 1,000 young men by providing them job options; some 3,000 are presently under training.

Ranas big break came soon after graduating with flying colours, as he proudly tells me. A team of foreign recruiters had come to interview refrigeration and air-conditioning graduates, and Rana was one of the 25 graduates short-listed for an interview. Since he had been working on his English language skills, he aced the round. Im doing all of this for my little one. Shortly after that, he received his offer letter.

Like Rana Hashim, Waqar also discovered Aman Tech through friends recommendation. He enrolled in automobile training pursuing a passion that he held since childhood. When they were younger, Waqars over-protective father would not allow his siblings and him to go out much. Waqar would fuel his passion for cars by creating toy models from matchboxes. He started working with real cars at a workshop that paid him nothing and went from job to job, including fast food restaurants. Even in the 21st century, people frown upon blue-collar work, he says.

Presently Waqar works in the day at Honda Motors, does an evening shift at a fast food chain and sleeps only three hours a night. This way he gets to do what he likes, as well as take a decent pay packet home. What I learnt at Aman Tech cannot be compared to the hands-on experience you get by fixing cars in a workshop, but it gives you focus and an internationally recognised diploma, says Waqar.

Rana Hashim and Waqar are just two of the hundreds that advocate Aman Techs cause: to create a growing force of skilled workers, with a positive mind-set and a strong work ethic.
