NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) As of Jan. 1, most government building projects in Tennessee no longer have to pay the prevailing wage.
WPLN-FM reports (http://bit.ly/1bAW8I8) Tennessee's prevailing wage law was in place for nearly four decades before the General Assembly voted to repeal it last year. The idea behind the law was to make sure every electrician or plumber hired on a government-funded project got paid the going rate.
Sen. Jack Johnson, a Franklin Republican, sponsored the repeal. He said the law stifled competition and made building projects too expensive.
With the change, local governments can still choose to have contractors pay a wage that's roughly average, but they don't have to.
The prevailing wage still has to be paid on highway projects in order for the state to receive federal highway funds.

This is why the firm is delighted to be able to provide clients with an extensive range of new coloured tarmac and decorative finishes in 2014.
Creating a stylish and welcoming entrance to a home or property has never been more important. NEW PROVIDENCE Folks looking to go sledding tomorrow at the site of the former K-Line building at the corner of Mountain Avenue and South Street may run into problemsor not. Demolition has started at the site and the new owners just might object to sledding on the site.
The building is being demolished to make room for a continuing care retirement community with 275 independent living units and up to 85 assisted living units/nursing beds.
The site, which is now owned by Redwood-ERC New Providence, LLC, has been fenced up at the top of the hill and all around the back. As of Thursday morning, Jan. 2, the driveway was open at both ends.
The facility was once the site of K-Line Transportation and, prior to that, Allstate Insurance. Its most recent corporate use was as Lucent Technologies' Murray Hill Corporate Center

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - On Thursday, when many Westdale Mall tenants received certified letters informing them they need to move out by March 31, many were determining what future course of action to take regarding their business.
"We are staying open and very hopeful of finding a new location on the west side of Cedar Rapids," said Paula Pino, manager of The Drop Inn Resale Shop, which has been operating for about 18 months.
"This just speeds up the process. We weren't thinking it would be so soon and it just will happen sooner than we thought it would."
The Drop Inn Resale Shop is a non-profit organization looking to develop a youth center on the west side of Cedar Rapids. The shop also supports international missions.
Justin Heitz, general manager of Chick-Fil-A at Westdale, said the future of the restaurant will be determined by the chain's corporate office in Atlanta, Ga. Heitz declined further comment, including whether the restaurant will remain open until March 31.
Frew Development Group, which is managing a $90 million redevelopment of Westdale, has indicated that Chick-Fil-A was expected to build a stand-alone store on the Edgewood Road perimeter of the mall.
The fast-food chain, one of the original tenants of Westdale, opened a stand-alone store on the Collins Road perimeter of Lindale Mall in October 2012. The stores require about four months to construct and equip, which would mean that a Westdale location would not be possible by the time the existing store is required to close.
There are about 23 "specialty tenants" at Westdale, including corporate-owned stores like Bath & Body Works, Eddie Bauer, General Nutrition Center, Rogers Jewelers and LensCrafters Eyewear. Store managers are referring all inquiries to their respective corporate parents, where messages have been left seeking comment.
While the interior of the mall will be demolished to prepare for redevelopment of the property, John Frew, president of Denver, Colo.-based Frew Development Group, said J.C. Penney and Younkers will remain open for business and will not be affected by the demolition.
All four anchor buildings at Westdale were constructed as independent structures. Frew Development Group has been working to secure a single tenant for the vacant former Von Maur department store building.

Theres nothing like a beautifully decorated holiday table, lit by soft candles, to set a festive mood during Christmas, Hanukkah and New Years celebrations.
But theres not much to be said for the kind of mood that comes about when candle wax seeps into the carpet.
Candle wax is definitely a challenge to remove from carpet? Why?
Well, candle wax, the most common type of wax that gets spilled on carpet, is hard to remove primarily because the high heat of the candle causes the wax to spread out during the spill. Plus, the color of the candle wax is rarely a perfect match or even a good blend for our carpeted floors.
Other types of waxes, like those used in polishes, cosmetics and cooking that often find their way onto our household textiles, are usually easier to remove with extraction and dry solvents.
Waxes are derived from many different sources, including beehives, petroleum products, plants and animals.
Most of the waxes used in candles come from petroleum by-products, usually called paraffin wax. Paraffin wax typically melts slowly, which is a plus for our holiday candles as they can last for hours, if not days.
Many of our carpet fibers are comprised of olefin and/or polyester, and those particular fibers are oil-loving in nature. So, when anything petroleum-based, like candle wax, comes in contact with those types of fibers, an unfortunate marriage takes place.
Nylon carpets are somewhat more forgiving when it comes to the waxy part of a spill, but wool carpets fare much worse and are often considered nightmarish when it comes to removing wax. But as with most things in life, with a little perseverance, that nightmare will go away.
To remove wax, most carpet cleaners use hot water extraction with very high heat, extracting the wax with chop strokes, short forward and backward movements of the cleaning wand.
