The decks were cleared for the re-entry of the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa into the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday, with key members of the partys highest decision-making body of the core committee holding formal discussions with him on several issues, including the modalities of merging his Karnataka Janata Paksha with the BJP.

Sources in the BJP said such a process had been taken up after the party central leadership gave the green signal to his re-inclusion. The meeting between Mr. Yeddyurappa and BJP leaders, which took place after a gap of more than one year, is also being seen as an effort to break the ice.

The meeting was held at a star hotel in the city and was attended by BJP core committee members Ananth Kumar, Pralhad Joshi, Jagadish Shettar and K.S. Eshwarappa. The meeting was preceded by separate meetings of the BJPs core committee and political affairs committee.

The leaders also decided to take up a joint tour of the State as part of the preparations for the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Yeddyurappa, who led the party to its first victory in the State in 2008 and became the Chief Minister, had turned a rebel after the party leadership forced him to step down following his indictment in the Karnataka Lokayuktas report on illegal mining. He quit the party in November 2012 and became the State president of the KJP after the BJP took a stand of not giving him any top position till he was cleared of the cases related to alleged corruption.

Meanwhile, the BJP has decided to stage a Statewide protest on January 6, against the inclusion of D.K. Shivakumar and R. Roshan Baig who are facing various charges into the Ministry.

Briefing presspersons after the core committee meeting, BJP State president Pralhad Joshi said party workers would sport black badges on that day at all the district centres.

The BJP Yuva Morcha would protest against the increase in the price of non-subsidised cooking gas on Friday, while the partys Mahila Morcha would register their protest on January 8 at all the Assembly constituencies, he said.

Meanwhile, the party has decided to hold consultations with the core committees of its district units on January 9 and 10 to decide the first list of candidates for the LS elections. The names of candidates would be recommended to the party national election committee by January 15 or 16, he said.

The party will also launch a door-to-door campaign from January 15 to 30 as part of its poll campaign. During this process, the party will take up a drive to include new names in the electoral rolls, he said.

The year 2013 was an eventful year for Jefferson City, with events such as the firing of a second city administrator in the past couple years and mold forcing the closure of the old Missouri State Penitentiary to tours. Last year, our newsroom picked the school districts plans for a new high school as our top story of the year. This year, we voted the failed vote to fund that plan as our No. 3 story.

But many in the newsroom agreed the top local story went to the story that was unquestionably bad news for our community: the closure of RR Donnelley and the loss of 475 jobs.

RR Donnelley, Jefferson Citys 12th largest employer, shut down its Jefferson City operations in October, leaving 475 employees without jobs. Many of the workers scrambled to stay employed, while some of the old-timers at the plant used a benefits package to either retire early or take time off before job-seeking.

The loss of jobs caused the city to lower its revenue projections by $50,000 for the current fiscal year. Donnelley, which never returned calls from the media after making its closure announcement, left despite a joint statement from Sen. Mike Kehoe and state representatives Mike Bernskoetter and Jay Barnes, who vowed to see if they could persuade the company to stay.

The facility was established in Jefferson City in 1964, as a part of the Von Hoffmann Press company. It specializes in printing and related business services, including print and digital publications. It has operations around the world, including other Missouri plants in Owensville and Liberty.

In mid-September, Nathan Nickolaus became the second city administrator to be fired by Jefferson City Mayor Eric Struemph.

In a closed session Sept. 16, the City Council voted 8-2 to fire Nickolaus after a standard evaluation of his performance, with 4th Ward Councilwoman Carrie Carroll and 3rd Ward Councilman Ken Hussey casting the opposing votes. Struemph had requested the motion to terminate Nickolaus contract, later saying Nickolaus lacked the necessary experience and failed to meet goals that had been laid out by the council.

Nickolaus was promoted to the city administrator position on an interim basis in May 2011, after the city fired former City Administrator Steve Rasmussen. At that time, Struemph said the reason for Rasmussens firing was that Struemph wanted his own management team on board. Prior to that, Nickolaus had served as city attorney since 2003. In December 2011, the council made the position permanent and, at the time, Struemph said Nickolaus had proven himself during the interim period.

Two weeks after being fired, Nickolaus began work as general counsel for Missouris Economic Development department.

Loss of 475 jobs named top local story of 2013

MOUNT OLIVE TWP. The year of 2013 was marked with the tragedy of drownings and fires but also with progress on the development front.

Here are some of the more important and dramatic news stories of the year.

Boys Drown

As they had done before, Nicholas Michael Cianciotto III and Clyde Schimanski III, both 15, of Budd Lake, went out ice fishing.

But on this evening of Monday, Jan. 7, the ice was too thin and the two boys fell through the ice believed to be one or two inches thick.

Emergency workers donned immersion suits and entered the frigid water but were unable to find the boys.

The only signs of the boys were a cell phone and backpack found floating on the water.

The next day, rescue workers used sonar to help locate the Cianciotto boy but the body of the Shimanski teen wasnt found until the next day. It was the first time anyone had fallen through ice on Budd Lake and drowned.

A memorial to the two boys was soon erected at the western end of the lake.

MILWAUKEE (WITI) The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers toclear snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs and mailboxes in an effort to helpletter carriers deliver your mail safely.

Snow and ice make delivery dangerous and slow, said Milwaukee Postmaster Easton C. Wright, Maintaining a clear path to the mail box including steps, porches, walkways and street approaches will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service, and help them get those letters and packages delivered on time.

Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside delivery should remove snow piles left by snow plows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers.

Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. The Postal Service curtails delivery only after careful consideration, and only as a last resort, said Wright.Any curtailed mail is attempted the next delivery day.

Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for our customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice. We want our letter carriers to be safe, added Grant. We can only do this with the help of our customers.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Expectations are rising for a stronger U.S. economy in 2014 after reports Thursday showed solid growth in manufacturing and construction spending at the end of last year.

Factory activity in December stayed near a 2 -year high. Americans are buying more cars and homes, increasing demand for steel, furniture and other manufactured goods. Manufacturers have boosted hiring to meet that demand and may add jobs at a healthier pace this year.

And builders stepped up spending on home construction in November, despite recent increases in borrowing rates. That suggests many remain confident in the housing recovery.

The economy has had bursts of healthy growth since the recession ended in June 2009, only to be followed by disappointing slowdowns. But many analysts think growth is now more sustainable.

"There was strength in some important sectors of the economy at the end of last year," Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics, said. "2014 could be the year where the recovery really starts to gain some ground."

The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said Thursday that its index of manufacturing activity slipped to 57 in December from 57.3 the previous month. But that's still the second-highest reading since April 2011. And any reading above 50 signals growth.

The ISM's measure increased for six straight months through November.

A measure of new orders rose to the highest level since April 2010. And a gauge of hiring increased to its highest level since June 2011. Indexes of production and manufacturers' stockpiles fell.

Separately, construction spending rose 1 percent in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $934.4 billion, the Commerce Department said. That's the highest in more than four years.

MABTON Finally, my dream has become a reality!

Those were the words of Gregorio Bustos at the grand opening of his new store, Pedros Appliances, which first welcomed customers Dec. 6 in Mabton.

Bustos couldnt hide his smile upon seeing his longtime ambition come true: his own store where he can work all year without being limited by the weather.

Don Gregorio as hes known by his customers and friends has been working for 17 years repairing washers, dryers, stoves and refrigerators.

But Bustos had no proper shop in which to do the work, so hes been fixing appliances on the patio of his Mabton home.

Since 2009, Ive been repairing appliances from my patio, even when it was really hot or really cold outside, he said. But still, I had to be able to do my work so I could provide for my family.

For the past year or so, Bustos and his wife, Marcelina, have been participating in a series of training courses with Rural Community Development Resources. There, they received finance and business administration classes, which made them strong candidates to receive one of the agencys loans.

Rural Community Development Resources is a nonprofit organization thats been designated a certified financial development institution by the U.S. Treasury Department. Its mission is to boost new business owners and help them reach a point of operating their businesses long term.
