NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Con artists are using a clever combination of building permits and the good names of reputable companies to scam Middle Tennessee customers.
Well-known Nashville roofing company Mr. Roof says some of its customers are being targeted by the scammers, who look for homes where there's been recent construction. Then, they show up, claiming to do follow-up services for an additional fee.
Mr. Roof has spent 50 years building a reputation, so you can imagine how rough it is to find out someone is out there impersonating you.
"They are pulling building permits and finding out where we've installed roofs or other trades," said Jeff Kinney, with Mr. Roof. "Essentially, what they'll do is they will approach the client, knock on the front door, and say, 'Hey, we are from Mr. Roof. We'd like to do a visual inspection of your roof - just quality insurance.' In some cases, they're charging the clients just do the inspection. Then, if they say they've found something that's not been done correctly, they'll charge them to fix it correctly."
The company found out about the scam when a would-be victim called the company directly to double-check the house call. That homeowner wasn't out any money, but others haven't been so lucky.
"We're trying to scramble and figure out what these people are doing out there. We don't know what's going on. We don't know to the extent these people have told them. We don't know if they've taken money from them. So it's very disheartening these people have been out there trying to represent us and our reputation," Kinney said.
Kinney says other roofing companies are reporting the same type of scam. It's a terrible thing to do to people, especially elderly people, but it's also a difficult thing to stop.
"We'd love to catch them," Kinney said.
The Better Business Bureau advises that if someone claims to work for a company, check that out. They remind customers that:

Summary: We are upgrading our recommendation on Beacon Roofing from Underperform to Neutral, with a target price of $42.00. Fourth-quarter 2013 adjusted earnings of Beacon dropped 7% year over year to $0.56 per share, due to lower gross margins. The company will benefit from continued focus on acquisition and its strong balance sheet position. U.S. housing starts also jumped to the highest level in five years, in November. While, pricing pressure, general market softness and competitive market remain headwinds for top-line growth. Further, the Architecture Billings Index fell to 49.8 in November, from 51.6 a month earlier due to uncertainty in demand. Moreover, higher mix of non-residential roofing products and sales mix will negatively impact gross margins in the near term.
Overview:
Founded in 1928, Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. (BECN) is one of the three largest roofing material distributors in the United States and Canada, with more than 90% of its sales coming from the U.S. Besides selling roofing materials asphalt shingles and single-ply roofing to both residential and non-residential markets, Beacon also deals in complementary building materials such as vinyl siding, doors, windows, insulation, and waterproofing systems. The company operates 236 branches across 39 states in the U.S. and 6 provinces in Canada. Its competition is primarily from local and regional roofing supply distributors. Local contractors dealing with roof replacement make up the bulk of its sales.

The Extras & Memories
WWE Main Event is a one-hour televised special on the Ion Network, and focuses on wrestling, and has little time allotted towards storylines or an over-use of interviews/promos. For the die-hard wrestling fan, who tunes in to exclusively watch wrestling, this is a positive
The negatives around the show are that it is only an hour, and doesnt showcase all of the mid-card talent, or those who did not appear on a RAW show, two nights before on Monday. Some wrestlers we see on RAW, and also have a second match on the Main Event show. How much is too much? How much is overkill, to the point where it gets redundant or repetitive?
As for the other show, it is a behind-the-scenes type of deal that has features and in-depth looks of superstars outside of the squared circle. This is a E-network special, called Total Divas.Yes, it does give an inside look of how writing and promo work is done, along with the physical training at the NXT/WWE Performance center. I for one, enjoy the show; and it does give a good look as to how the TV shows are produced, presented and all of the pre-takes before it.
Quite personally, I also miss Tough Enough, also But thats another story.
Total Divas also discusses some of the real life couples of some of the major WWE stars, and gives a view of what life is like for those couples; outside the ring and related social interactions.
You, being the reader and my fellow audience- what do you think of the two shows? Good? Bad? Indifferent?
WWE Tough Enough was a TV show that would take contestants and average Joes and Jills who may or may not have had athletic backgrounds, but were to be taught some of the introductions about the business. It was a hard knocks type of course, that became a stepping stone for some talent to enter the business, and do so in an abbreviated format- through Tough Enough which endorsed said competitor(s) to be eligible for Primetime, and other additional training.
Tough Enough started with 4-5 trainers and in its inception was Al Snow, who now works for TNA Impact Wrestling. Other featured trainers were Tazz, Chavo Guererro, Tori and Jacqueline. Tazz and Chavo also have plied their trade in the ring, like Snow- and they too have found their way also to Impact Wrestling. Bob Hardcore Holly Howard is also a trainer during the first season(s), and was a WWE star as well.

Metrolink bosses were forced to remove a new tram from the network after vandals smashed a window.
The Manchester Metrolink Twitter account reported delays between Whitefield and the city centre at around 5.15pm today after the tram was damaged at Whitefield.
It is understood an unknown object struck the tram after being thrown from Victoria Park.
The @MCRMetrolink account tweeted: Due to an act of vandalism to a tram at Whitefield passengers between Whitefield and the city may experience an additional 6 minute wait.
We will shortly be reintroducing a replacement tram at our Queens Road depot to replace the vandalised tram.
A window has been smashed on one of our new trams. It has been withdrawn for safety reasons. A replacement tram will be put back into service at our Queens Road depot shortly.

SAN DIEGO - The former owner of a Miramar-area cabinet company was ordered Thursday to spend two years in custody for taking more than $150,000 from 16 victims for remodeling jobs that he never did.
Felix "Eddie" Brown, 54, pleaded guilty last October to diversion of construction funds and grand theft.
As part of his plea agreement, Brown -- who owned Bardon Cabinetry -- will be allowed to serve his custody in the county jail instead of state prison.
According to prosecutors, Brown took thousands of dollars from his victims in May 2011 for kitchen and bathroom remodeling jobs, then suddenly closed his business and left town without doing the work.
Melissa Jeffers said she was "stunned" by the turn of events. She said she had done a lot of research on kitchen remodeling companies before settling on Brown's outfit.
"We were kind of pressured by a couple of his employees -- if you don't write the check, we can't order the wood -- so we wrote the check for $14,100, and that was on a Saturday," Jeffers said. "The check was deposited on Saturday and cleared the bank on Monday, and Tuesday they closed their doors for good."
Jeffers said she never signed a contract because she was going to come back to the showroom on Tuesday and make her final selections for the remodel.
"I just think he's a complete crook," she said. "I don't know if we will ever recover the money."
Frank Melbourn, who lost $14,000 to Brown, said the defendant got what he deserved.
"I'm satisfied that I think justice has been served," he said. "All along, me and the rest of the victims felt like a crime had occurred, and we desperately were trying to get the right people involved so that we could get this thing addressed."

The City Planning Commission on Tuesday will review the first office building proposed as part of the $100 million Bakery Square 2.0 development in the East Liberty/Larimer area.
Walnut Capital of Shadyside, the developer and owner of Bakery Square, is proposing a 218,000-square-foot building in the 6400 block of Penn Avenue. The $27 million project would be opposite the existing office building in Bakery Square and would connect by an enclosed pedestrian walkway four stories above Penn Avenue.
The new building, the first of a possible three with a combined 400,000 square feet, will be six stories tall, according to a suggested artist sketch.
The development, on the former Reizenstein Middle School site, will include two 175-unit apartment buildings and 57 rental town houses. Construction of the first apartment structure will begin early this year.
No one would say whether Google, which is expanding at Bakery Square, might be a tenant of the new building.
