    New physicians’ office building opens next to Hoke hospital

    - January 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    RAEFORD - The doctors are in.

    Physicians began seeing patients in the primary care and cardiology office at FirstHealth of the Carolinas' new Physician Offices & Specialty Services building in Hoke County last month.

    Dr. Mahalia R. Guerrier, an internist, and Dr. Vicki Hardy, who practices family medicine, anchor the primary care practice. Dr. Debbie R. Thomasson handles the cardiology section of the practice.

    The 20,000-square-foot facility, which adjoins FirstHealth's Hoke County branch of Moore Regional Hospital, will eventually house offices for several specialties once the months-long move-in is complete later this year.

    "In moving here, we're closer to the hospital, so I can go back and forth to the hospital and can take care of things that have to be done at the hospital more easily," Thomasson said Thursday.

    She said driving to and from facilities for tests and other procedures can disrupt flow and take time away from patients.

    The location also makes access to patients easier for the doctors, Guerrier said.

    "We can work in here, and we can still follow a patient over there," Guerrier said of patients admitted at the hospital. "If there's an issue, they can easily call us here, and we can go see the patient."

    In addition, physician assistant Jim Shaffer works in the primary care practice and is available to see walk-in patients.

    Working in such proximity to the primary care physicians complements her focus on preventive medicine, Thomasson said.

    MHPV Nominates Whiteside Hotel, Ramsey & Milne Bldg. for National Register of Historic Places

    - January 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    The Morrison Historic Preservation Commission (MHPC) is applying to nominate an appropriate portion of the communitys commercial district to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), a listing of spaces, structures or areas recognized to be of national historic, cultural or architectural importance.

    With the assistance of our consultants, the MHPC has spent months researching and writing the substance of our application. In the hopes that the community will find the information contained therein both interesting and informative, we will be running, one at a time, in no particular order, over the next year, the architectural and historical description of each building included.

    Contributing Category: The term contributing means that the structure lies within an historic district and adds to the architectural or historic significance of the same as a whole. If it is within the boundaries of the district, but does not so supplement, it is deemed non-contributing.

    The second report is for the nomination of the Whiteside Hotel.

    130 East Main Street

    Date: 1865

    Large freestanding three-story corner building with unpainted brick exterior. The non-original asymmetrical storefront of the main elevation (south) consists of a recessed glass and aluminum double-door entrance (Kawneer), aluminum display windows, and brick veneer. A retractable fabric awning is immediately above the storefront with the transom area covered with vertical aluminum siding (the siding continues along the side elevation).

    The upper facade features five segmental arch window openings per story. The second story windows are rectangular replacements while the third story windows are historic segment top wood double-hungs. A deeply projecting wood cornice with scrollwork brackets spans the width of the parapet and wraps around the corner onto the side and rear elevations.

    The long side elevation (east) lacks first story openings instead featuring a non-historic painted mural which spans the entire length of the side wall. The upper facade has eleven window openings per story, with replacement second story windows and four-over-four segment top wood double-hung windows above.

    The rear elevation (north) is similar to the side but with three window openings per story (one at second story is a door). There is also a non-historic loading dock and rear entrance. A three story concrete block elevator shaft is near the northwest corner.

    Flood list of do’s and don’ts from Sarawak Energy Berhad

    - January 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    KUCHING: It is crucial to stay away from power lines, electrical wires and installations in flooded areas, Sarawak EnergyBerhad (SEB) cautioned yesterday.

    SEB said it wished to advise members of the public to take extra precautions, before, during and after the flood recedes toavoid accidents and fatalitycaused by electrical hazards associated with flooding, according to chief operating officer Lu Yew Hung in a press statement yesterday.

    For houses anticipated to be affected by flood, the main switchboard should be switched off before water enters the house for the safety of the occupants, said Lu.

    Electrical appliances exposed to water can be extremely dangerous if re-energised without proper reconditioning or replacement. Flood damage to electrical equipment can sometimes be hidden; such as television sets which can cause electric shock even after they have been unplugged.

    It is important not to use appliances or motors that have gotten wet unless they are declared safe by a qualified technician, said Lu.

    When preparing for flood, the public affected must be determine if their home is in an area of potential flood risk. They are advised to check with the local authorities such as the District Office or Local Municipality or Drainage and Irrigation Department.

    The following is more advice and useful information from SEB:

    In any area where immediate flooding is anticipated, it is essential to shut off all electrical power by turning off the main switchboard;

    If you have time before you evacuate your home or business, move as much electrical equipmentas possible to floors or areasabove the anticipated flood level;

    If needed, engage a licensed contractor to remove fixed electrical appliances such as electric motor, fan and other heavy machineries from been affectedby the anticipated floods;
