The year began with duct tape.
A man who was so intoxicated on an Iceland Air flight that his fellow passengers were forced to restrain him by duct-taping him to his seat was one of the first major airline stories of 2013. The story, and the photos that accompanied it, were so unbelievable that I hesitated to report it as it began to surface. But it was true.
Let's call duct-taped airline passenger a low point for air travel in 2013. There were others, of course, but there were also some incredible stories of airline service and compassion. Stories so beautiful they brought me to tears.
And then there was the woman escorted off a plane for singing Whitney Houston songs.
Click through the next few pages to see the best and worst of air travel in 2013. And that story that made me cry? It's the last one on the list, and my pick for the very best airline story of 2013.
A cellphone video showed passengers onboard an Iceland Air flight from Reykjavik to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport subduing an unruly passenger by tying him to his seat with duct tape and zip ties after he began screaming and hitting other passengers.
The unidentified passenger allegedly downed an entire bottle of duty-free alcohol, according to a man who posted a photo on his blog, who said the picture was taken by a friend on the flight.
The airline accused the man of accosting and hitting people on the flight. Passengers say he even tried to choke the person next to him and screamed, "The plane is going to crash."
Once in awhile, an airline employee does something that goes above and beyond the call of duty to help a customer. But it's probably safe to assume that none of those employees were the CEO of the airline.
Richard Anderson, Delta's CEO, gave up his seat on an oversold flight, making it possible for Jessie Frank to pick her daughter up from a summer camp for diabetic kids, she said.

New Delhi, Dec. 30:
Decks are getting cleared for the re-induction of former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
A decision is likely to be taken by the party top brass ahead of the National Executive and National Council meetings scheduled here in January.
The BJP leadership is learned to have sought the view of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on bringing the partys first Southern Chief Minister back to the fold. Efforts are also being made to pacify senior leaders such as L.K. Advani and Sushma Swaraj, who were instrumental in keeping Yeddyurappa away from the party over corruption allegations against him.
Yeddyurappa said in Shimoga that he would join the BJP in the first week of January.
I will give sweet news in the first week of New Year. I know the party which I built has suffered due to my absence. I will not only rejoin my parental party but also tour the entire State to strengthen the hands of Narendra Modi to make him the Prime Minister, he said.
Confirming discussions at the Central level, senior leader Arun Jaitley said a decision on his induction would be taken at an appropriate time.
Narendra Modi, the partys prime ministerial candidate, is reportedly in favour of bringing Yeddyurappa back. Discussions on his home-coming gained momentum after the party lost power in Karnataka.
Party President Rajnath Singh had recently reviewed the organisational situation in Karnataka. A sizeable section within the State BJP also reportedly wants him back.
The BJPs leadership meetings will begin from January 16. The party has to discuss his re-induction in the National Executive.

FAIRBANKS Fairbanks' soon-to-be newest youth shelter, The Door, hasn't quite opened its own doors yet, but the building took one significant step in the right direction Sunday.
Volunteers from Community Covenant Church showed up at the storage unit of Fairbanks Youth Advocates, the organization that runs the shelter, Sunday morning. The volunteers brought their own box van, loading all of the small two-story shelter's furniture and transporting it to the new building.
The building had been sitting empty since its completion two weeks earlier. Fairbanks Youth Advocates began construction on the new shelter in August, originally hoping it might be completed by winter.
Fairbanks Youth Advocates Director Marylee Bates said the organization hopes to have the shelter fully operational by sometime in February. Before it can open the staff must finish preparing the inside of the shelter and complete a lengthy state application.
"Most of our employees are working nights at the shelter, so it's kind of a slow going process because we can't work days and nights," Bates said.
Fairbanks Youth Advocates has been operating a temporary overnight shelter at First Presbyterian Church on Seventh Avenue in downtown Fairbanks since last December. The organization will operate that shelter from 9 p.m. through 8 a.m. each night until the official opening of The Door.
Bates said Fairbanks Youth Advocates has served nearly 170 different teenagers at the temporary shelter in 2013.
The volunteers who helped the organization move its furnishings Sunday came from Community Covenant Church, located just off Airport Way between Wilbur Street and Peger Road, as part of a community service program run by the church.
On months with five Sundays, the church does not hold a service on the last Sunday of the month. Instead, the church organizes service projects throughout the community, which church members attend that day.
"They contacted us maybe three weeks ago and said they were looking for a community service project to do on this particular day and if there was something they could do for us," Bates said. "We thought maybe they could help us move. We tossed that idea back to them and they said 'yes we can help you move. We'd be glad to.'"
