    Verdict

BACK IN A TIC has undoubtedly been racing in better company and though now looking exposed should appreciate the drop in class and gain his first success over fences. Blazing Sonnett was very consistent over hurdles and it looks like being the same story over fences after two very good performances where he's jumped well. Byerley Babe was in excellent form over hurdles at this time a year ago and will be all the better for her debut run over fences at Naas last month. She should go well while winning point-to-pointer Maple Valley Gold showed her versatility by scoring over hurdles at Downpatrick and should do even better over regulation fences.

Back In A Tic (IRE) 7-1 (10-11) Soon tracked leaders, 3rd approaching straight, 4th when awkward jump 3 out, soon no impression, 5th of 8, 25l behind Dressedtothenines (10-11) at Cork 2m 1f mares nov chs Grade 3 (1) sft.

    Verdict

It was a surprise to see Kilcarry Bridge reverting to hurdles at Thurles on Sunday after an excellent run behind Sitcom over fences there last month. JUPITOR had only looked moderate over fences before an encouraging handicap debut at Navan where he made Oscars Business pull out the stops. That sort of form should be good enough as Coole Avenue hasn't shown much over fences and connections resort to a first-time visor. Springfield Way has easily the best form of these but an absence since finishing tailed off in a Grade 2 hurdle at Leopardstown almost two years ago is a cause for concern.

Jupitor (IRE) 11-1 (10-12) Impeded 2nd, soon tracked leaders, closer in 2nd 3 out, no impression last, kept on same pace run-in, 2nd of 15, 4 1/2l behind Oscars Business (10-7) at Navan 2m 4f hcp chs 0-130.

Coole Avenue (IRE) 33-1 (11-12) Always behind, no impression from 5 out, never a factor, 14th of 17, well behind Foxrock (11-11) at Fairyhouse 2m 5f beg chs in Nov.

Kashline (IRE) 28-1 (11-7) Held up towards rear, ridden into 7th 3 out, no impression in moderate 6th 2 out, kept on one pace, 6th of 12, 24l behind Bright New Dawn (11-12) at Punchestown 2m 4f beg chs.

Fergiethelegend (IRE) 8-1 (11-7) Towards rear, ridden 6 out, moderate 9th 3 out, kept on one pace, no impression in 7th when fell 2 out, in a race won by James (11-0) at Downpatrick 2m 5f hnt chs gd, 12 ran.

Dr Nana (IRE) 66-1 (11-12) Always towards rear, no danger in poor 6th 3 out, completely tailed off, 6th of 9, well behind Don Cossack (11-12) at Galway 2m 6f beg chs hvy in Oct.

Notimetoserve (IRE) 7-1 (11-12) Soon behind in rear, never a factor, remote 4th close home,, 4th of 6, well behind Is Herself About (11-5) at Clonmel 2m beg chs gd.

Springfield Way (IRE) 50-1 (11-3) Led or disputed lead, headed 3 out, weakened quickly approaching straight, tailed off, 9th of 11, well behind Boston Bob (11-10) at Leopardstown 2m 4f nov hdl Grade 2 (1) sft in Jan '12.

Kilcarry Bridge (IRE) 10-1 (11-7) Led, headed approaching straight and no impression in 5th before 2 out, under pressure and no extra approaching last,, 6th of 8, 24l behind Los Amigos (11-3) at Thurles 2m 6f nh nov hdl sft.

    Verdict

Grade 1 winning hurdler MORNING ASSEMBLY has really taken to fences and could go all the way to the top judging by his defeat of the well regarded Don Cossack in a Grade 2 at Punchestown. There's much more to come and he'll take some beating. Bright New Dawn did very well over hurdles landing a Grade 2 at Thurles in February and made a very pleasing debut over fences at Punchestown when conceding the useful Dogora 12lb. He's a smart prospect and won't go down without a fight. Carlingford Lough wasn't beaten far by Don Cossack at Fairyhouse and the Galway Plate winner will ensure a strong test of stamina while none of the remaining quartet can be discounted in what should prove to be an informative contest.

Carlingford Lough (IRE) 4-1 (11-10) Tracked leaders, 5th halfway, ridden approaching 3 out, progress to lead after 2 out, challenged last and soon headed, kept on one pace under pressure, 2nd of 6, 1 3/4l behind Don Cossack (11-10) at Fairyhouse 2m 4f nov chs Grade 1 (4yo+) (1).

Morning Assembly (IRE) 6-4 (11-3) Always prominent and disputed lead, led briefly 3 out, pushed along and headed next, ridden and rallied approaching last, led run-in and kept on well under pressure, won at Punchestown 2m 6f nov chs G2 (1) in Nov beating Don Cossack (11-3) by 1/2l, 4 ran.

Foxrock (IRE) 5-4fav (11-11) Tracked leaders, pushed along in 4th after 3 out, headway after 2 out, led approaching last and ridden, not fluent at last and joined, rallied run-in to lead inside final furlong, kept on, won at Fairyhouse 2m 5f beg chs in Nov beating Touch The Eden (11-12) by 3/4l, 17 ran.

My Murphy (IRE) 4-1 (11-12) Soon chased leaders, improved to be on terms before straight, led approaching last where headed, regained lead and stayed on well run-in, won at Fairyhouse 3m beg chs sft beating Followmeuptocarlow (11-12) by 3l, 12 ran.

Bright New Dawn (IRE) 5-4fav (11-12) Made all, pressed approaching 2 out, asserted before last, ridden after last and strongly pressed again run-in, all out, won at Punchestown 2m 4f beg chs beating Dogora (11-0) by 1/2l, 12 ran.

Mad Brian (IRE) 7-1 (10-12) Mid-division, headway into 6th 3 out, ridden and went 2nd next, disputed lead briefly at last, kept on well in 2nd run-in, 2nd of 20, 1/2l behind Cootamundra (10-2) at Navan 3m hcp chs 0-150 in Nov.

Sizing Rio (IRE) 3-1 (11-10) Tracked leader and led 3rd, headed 6th and remained prominent, dropped to 5th 3 out and ridden entering straight, no impression in 4th after next, 4th of 6, 12l behind Don Cossack (11-10) at Fairyhouse 2m 4f nov chs Grade 1 (4yo+) (1).

Aztec motel subcontractors still waiting for payment

    - December 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

AZTEC Area businesses that helped build Aztec's first national chain hotel are still waiting to be paid.

Located at the south end of downtown Aztec near the intersection of Pepsi Way and U.S. Highway 550, the Aztec Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham opened its doors in early October. While the hotel now offers 70 rooms, a pool, a hot tub and free Wi-Fi, subcontractors are still out in the cold.

"We did quite a bit of work on the project, but have not been paid yet," said Clint Freeman, co-owner of Sun Glass of Farmington. "It makes us strapped, but we're blessed to have a lot of good customers."

In operation since 1952, Sun Glass installed doors, bathroom hardware and mirrors for the hotel. Like the other subcontractors hired to work on the hotel, Sun Glass was contracted by CMI, a privately held company based in Dunedin, Fla.

Jeff Jaeger, president of San Juan Insulation and Drywall in Durango, has yet to see payment for installing the hotel's insulation, drywall and acoustic ceilings.

"It's a substantial amount. Not that there's a good time of year, but especially around the holidays, this represents a hardship," Jaeger said. "We've covered payroll, paid our vendors, but we need to be paid."

Jaeger said he has filed a lien against the hotel for unpaid work and was contacted by an attorney representing the hotel.

That lawyer is Patricia Simpson, a Farmington attorney who is handling the payment negotiations.

"Wyndham and the Microtel and the developer have met all their obligations," Simpson said on Friday. "There are methods in place to notify the subs and we are proceeding to get them paid. It's a very sensitive legal issue. It's being handled as quickly as we can."

Messages left with CMI seeking comment were not answered as of late Friday.

Remove mold, then take care of ceiling

    - December 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Q: Our 7-year-old finished garage, built on a slab, has mold on the ceiling in all three bays. One can see the outline of the ceiling studs. The walls are clear. There is an apartment over the garage. Where should we start, please?

A: Before starting, an explanation, complicated by the apartment above the garage, is this: The garage ceiling is not insulated, and the ceiling joists (not studs) are a bit cooler than the whole ceiling, and water vapor builds up in the garage and condenses on the ceiling under the joists, and mold grows, hence the mold is only on the outline of the joists.

To start, treat the mold stains with a mix of 1 part bleach and 3 parts water. If the ceiling is not insulated, have cellulose blown in. If the garage ceiling is already insulated, then ventilate the garage to release all that water vapor outside.

Q: I recently took three wool shirts out of the closet for winter wear, and found moth holes in two of them. I washed and froze both of them to kill any eggs, and hung a "Safer" trap to catch any live moths. What else can I do? I really don't like the smell of mothballs.

A: Go to a store that sells anti-moth products, and you should be able to buy a non-odor treatment.

    Keeping rodents out of car

A caller recently asked if there is a way to keep rodents from chewing electrical wires in his car. The car is parked outdoors, and he has no garage. The Handyman suggested he find a garage he could rent and make rodent proof, or install deterrents in the car.

Here is what Dick Shohet of Carlisle suggested: "We find that fabric softener sheets work wonders to discourage rodent damage in our vehicles. We put a sheet under the hood, in the trunk, and a third somewhere in the cockpit. Shazam! No rodents. And they smell nice."

Thanks, Dick. Your answer went right into my archives.

Q: We have a very long ranch that is over 50 years old. We have forced hot air heat/air conditioning through floor grates and overhead ducts. Every year the furnace is cleaned, I ask about cleaning the ducts. No one ever recommends it. But, I have not understood why. Please let me know the company you would suggest and how often.
