Inspired by something he read on Facebook, Julien Guignard is offering a free shovelling service to seniors in Stephenville.

Julien Guignard shovels off the step of the residence of a senior couple in a free service he is providing this winter.

Julien said he read how times are tough for some seniors and that it gets expensive for them to get steps and walkways shovelled, if they are able to get someone to do it at all.

The 16-year-old decided he was going to provide that service free of charge when hes available to do it after school hours, and got his mom Patti to do up some small posters and put them out around at different locations.

In the meantime, he and his mom have been driving around Stephenville and looking for people who need help.

Theyve done a few places, including some shovelling of the step and porch area at the animal shelter in Stephenville, a couple of places at the seniors complex located on New Mexico Drive and at an elderly ladies house on their own street, St. Clare Avenue.

Since putting out the posters, theyve even received several calls from Alberta, with sons and daughters asking them to look out for their moms property.

Its a big worry for people who are away and have parents here but no other family, Patti said.

She hopes more people will call and take advantage of the free service Julien is providing, that she helps him out with.

1. Cool hues. Colour trendsetter Pantone opted for vibrant pop with the selection of Radiant Orchid a purple hue infused with hot pink as its colour of the year for 2014.

But the ultra-bold shade seems to be the exception rather than the rule with a sleek yet more subdued palette of colours emerging for home interiors.

Paint manufacturer Benjamin Moore selected Breath of Fresh Air a pale, sky blue hue as its colour of the year. While there were several examples of deep blue, teal and purple featured in its 2014 Colour Trends Guide, the company's standout hue for the new year was among a vast array of softer shades like Distant Gray, Peach Parfait and Lavender Mist.

Grech said the intention was to create a collection of colours which weren't specific to one particular style as has been customary in the past.

"Even though it's often the most economical part of your design project, it takes up a lot of space. And if you get that too strong, that's what you'll notice," she said in reference to paint colour choice. "Even if you spend a ton of money on your new sofa or your Carrara marble countertop, if you get the paint colour wrong, it throws everything off."

A GROUP of artists are searching for people with memories of war painter Stanley Spencer from during his spell in Port Glasgow.

A GROUP of artists are searching for people with memories of war painter Stanley Spencer from during his spell in Port Glasgow.

Absent Voices, a creative project set up primarily to celebrate Greenocks historic sugar sheds, want to speak to people who have recollections of the great artist.

Their research is part of a huge project aimed at celebrating the areas rich industrial heritage and bringing the iconic sheds back to life in the 21st century.

The group of artists involved are also hoping to track down anyone who met painter Joan Eardley.

Lead artist Alec Galloway, whose father worked in the sugar industry, said: This project is about recalling just how massive the industry was, and how important it was in the development of Greenock as a town.

If you walk around Inverclyde today, there is virtually no evidence of Greenocks past as a major player on the world sugar stage.

Many people who walk down Jamaica or Virginia Street today will be unaware of the significance of these street names.
